Well white items in the other game could be found socketed and used to make runewords, there is really no use for them in D3 as of now except to sell.

Nope. Not even to sell. A blue post specifically said the design intent is that you don't even want to pick them up. If they see people regularly doing so and selling them, they said they would reduce theiralready negligiblevalue even further.

I hated that aspect... i dont want to keep around white/gray items in the off-chance that you "might"need them for a runeword later.
It completely de-logicifies the quality = value aspect of loot.
some junk gray items could be worth three times as much as a unique in D2... thats really annoying as it means you have to pick up every single item in the off-chance that it might be worth something, rather than be able to tell whether its worth
* walking over there
* picking it up
* evaluating the item
* keeping it around to trade later
