My name's Jesta, if you're a regular on /r/diablo on reddit.com, you've probably seen some of my updates about the little site I've been building for about a little over month now. It's been pretty well received so far, so I figured I'd branch out a bit more to some of the other Diablo 3 sites and interact with some new communities!
I've been building D3Up.com in my spare time as a tool to help you refine your Diablo 3 builds/gear as much as possible. Updates are constant, the site is ever evolving and I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out so far. I'll try not to ramble, but rambling's one of my strong points, so let's just get down to the features I'm offering up on the site to help you improve your game.
Gear/Build/Skill Calculator
The first major feature I want to talk about is what I've been calling "Builds". Builds are essentially a snapshot of your character, with all of your gear and skills, that you can share or keep private. Think of it like a D3 Profile on the armory, except it only updates when you update it. As a user, you can create as many builds as you'd like, and configure them however you choose.
For example, this is my wizard build, with all of the gear I'm currently using as well as all of my skills and passives. All of the information about my build is located in the left portion of the page. The right side of the page however is statistics based on my gear and skills, including EHP, DPS and General Statistics.
For everyone but me, the page is pretty simple, but when you are working with your own build, controls and buttons are added everywhere that you can take action. This lets me easily change which items I have equipped and create new items to try out.
You'll also notice in that screenshot there are new tabs, only visible to the owner of the build.
Creating/Importing a Build
Up until earlier this week, there was only one way to create a build, by manually entering all of the items and skills into the system. With the release of the D3 Armory Profiles, we released a character importer that will automatically build your character with all of the items you're currently wearing. So to create a build, all you need to do is as follows:
- Create a Build (Under "Builds" on the top navigation)
- Enter the information about the build, ie Name, Description, Battle.net Profile URL, Class
- Method A - Manually create all the items for your build by clicking the "New" button next to each slot.
- Method B - In the upper right, click "Copy from Battle.net" and follow the instructions
- Goto the Skills tab and click "Change Skills", then select all of the skills you use and hit "Save"
You're done, now you have a permanent home for your own character experimentation and to show off! So what else can you do with this build? Read on!
The Compare Tab
This section lets me compare two items that already exist as items in the database. For example, I'm currently wearing a helm called The Hope, but I have another item I've created called Undaunted Veil, I want to know what would happen if I were to equip this item.
Head on over to the compare tab and select "Helm" as the slot to compare against, then pick the Undaunted Veil as the item to compare it to. Instantly the calculator will compare the two items and generate a table of stats that are going to change, including your DPS and EHP.
This requires the items to already exist in the database, which was kind of a pain when comparing items in the auction house looking for upgrades. Users on /r/diablo asked for an item simulator for quick comparisons, so I decided to give it a shot.
The Item Simulator
In order to compare items quickly, I created the Item Simulator, which is another tab you can find on your builds. The first thing you do in the simulator is select the Slot of the item you're looking to simulate changes against. For this example, I'm going to use my helm again, The Hope. So I choose "Helm" from the drop down and the simulator automatically loads my current helmet into what I've been calling the "Item Builder", which looks like this.
The Attributes selector allows you to quickly add/remove attributes from the simulated item and the rendered tooltip below contains text boxes that let you change the values of those attributes. To use it, all you have to do is start changing the numbers in the text box.
As an example, I'm going to say the helmet I'm looking at purchasing has 360 armor, 200 int, 100 vit and 4.5 crit (and has a socket still). I unselect the attributes that aren't on the item (the strength, resist all and crit/ap), add the new attributes (vitality and crit), and then put in their values.
Now I know exactly what the item I'm looking at is going to do to my character before I even buy it! None of these changes actually alter my build either, as soon as I leave the "Simulate" tab, everything reverts back to normal.
Individual Skill DPS
One of the newest features on the site is in the Skills Tab, calculations for every single skill you use that show how much damage those abilities do with your current gear and skills. Direct Damage abilities render and show you the DPS, Average Hit, as well as the range of damage it will do with and without crit. It also realizes when an ability is a DoT based effect and then shows you a few different stats such as Damage per Tick.
You'll also notice that skills with proc/duration based buffs have a checkbox next to them that says "Activiate". In the screenshot above, you'll notice that Frost Nova - Deep Freeze has one of these buffs, +15% Crit Damage. If you want to simulate that the skill is active, just hit the checkbox. Notice what happens? Your entire build updates every statistic simulating the change.
Every skill is in the database and is able to be added to your build, but not every skill working quite yet. There's over 600 of them, but I'm slowly making tons of them work every day and as people discover they aren't working. If you find a skill that isn't working properly, just let me know and I should have it working ASAP!
The Statistics Panel (Right Panel)
The right hand of all builds contains as many statistics as I could possibly come up with. Currently, you'll notice 4 different tabs:
Stats - General Statistics, should match up nicely with your character's detailed stats.
EHP - Effective Health Calculations based on your Gear/Skills/Passives. Also shows EHP contributions PER piece of gear, helping you find you're lowest contributing piece of gear that's in need of an upgrade!
DPS - Currently is only shows the contributions to DPS for each piece of gear. If you're a pure DPS class, this should help you figure out which of your items needs an upgrade next!
Gains - This one was added earlier this week, it's a list of stats that show how much EHP or DPS you would gain for adding +1 of the given stat on your build.
I've got a few more tabs in the works for some other useful ideas I've got.
Other Site Features
So now that I've crit you with a huge wall of text, I'll just quickly rattle off some of the other features of the site that might interest you!
Build Browser - Lets you browse all public builds in the database, sorted by Views, Votes, DPS or EHP.
Item Browser - Lets you browse all of the items in the database, and filter them down to whatever attributes you select. Looking for a belt with X, Y and Z? Use the attribute selector to pick those stats and it will return only items with those.
My Shop - A tool that lets you post what items you're selling on the Gold AH/RMAH, for how much, and then record the sales price. The system has about 1000 sales so far from people dedicated to building up a solid database of "What sold for how much" that will help populate prices in the Item Pricer. Here's a page with more information.
Item Pricer - A tool that lets you enter statistics of an item, then compares them to past sales from users using the My Shop feature. Hopefully if we get enough dedicated AH Flippers / Crafters using the system, it will turn into a useful pricing tool for the Gold AH and RMAH.
Sales History - A page where you can look through every single item everyone's ever sold and filter them by the attributes of your choosing.
Item Creator - Anyone can (even non-users) can create items in the database with whatever statistics they want.
In Closing
It's been awesome working on this site and interacting so far with everyone in the Diablo 3 community. I'll be continually updating this site, keeping it fast and easy, as well as ad-free (for as long as humanly possible, it's a decent server, and I don't see the need to advertise anytime soon).
I'll keep checking back and try to respond to every question or bug you find. If this community appreciates the tool, I'll also keep this post maintained with updates and collect more feedback. Reddit is nice, but the posts I make there get lost into oblivion within 24 hours and it makes it hard to keep the discussion going.
I'm hoping with a forum like this, we can have a longer discussion and work together as a community to come up with the best tools possible!
good luck figuring out how to fix it though, i did the math myself and it doesn't go over 200k on paper yet i clearly hit 200k very often with 48% damage from overawe. speaking of mantra of conviction, a double checkbox including the passive damage bonus and the bonus from activating it would be nice.
i can tell you that it hits 145% weapon damage. not that this matters for calculating for dps but it either hits 110% and 35% in seperate hits or sometimes it combines the 2 which is why i see higher numbers.
762*19.79 =15003 (max base weapon damage based off mainhand sword)
15003*1.45= 21754 (max base white hit without moc+tc)
15003*1.45*4.84 =105296 max crit (base without moc+tc)
105296*1.24 = 130567 (max crit with overawe passive)
actually i think moc is why i'm getting the errors i'll have to try to figure that out in another test, but in case you didn't include this into the calc, fists of thunder has a 50% haste buff.

Yeah that's incredibly strange!
I've been trying to figure out a way to do the double-buff from mantra of conviction, a double checkbox (one for each value) would be a good solution, I just don't have the code in place for it just yet. It's actually the only skill I think I've run across that has one buff for a short duration, then another buff for the remainder of the duration.
I'll bet you're right, the 50% increased attack speed coupled with how it combines numbers together when they hit within a second of eachother is the reason you end up seeing the 200k+ crits and the calc isn't showing that. I actually don't have the off the sheet attack speed increase for monk primarys activated just yet, that's another thing on my todo list.
But I'm definitely going to use your profile as an example for when I do finally get around to fixing the monk abilities!
Nice stuff, but there seems to be some problems with the EHP gear calculations as all my gear except a ring gives a negative contribution. http://d3up.com/b/3191
Well, those numbers are designed to show you how much EHP you would lose if you were to remove that piece of gear. I could remove the negative sign, but the numbers would remain the same.
Also, your ring doesn't provide any EHP, so that number is correct. It provides EHP w/ Dodge, but not EHP.
Why do you need to sync your profile so often? You do realize that you can change the gear on the builds by clicking the "Modify" button on your build.
Normally, someone will create a build and sync it every couple days, if they changed a lot of their gear. They then use the compare and simulate tools without having to re-import their character, simulating changes on items.
The armory doesn't even update more than once per hour does it? Also for the record, registered users have a 15 minute wait between sync's.
