no mephisto's soulstone was chipped into a few pieces, each one given to the council members of the Zakarum, and baal's wasn't destroyed nor was it spoken about at the end of LOD from what i remember
that was Baal's. But with the destruction of the Worldstone Sanctuary isnt any longer shielded by the Burning Hells (or the High Heavens). That comet could be just the start of the invasion. And they already mentioned 7 Lesser Evils (!).
What? Are you on drugs or something, making up lore? Mephisto's was shattered into many pieces, Baal's is unaccounted for since his death. Shows us how much you know

Baals soulstone was shattered by his assault on Tal Rasha before he was first captured or imprisoned. Its how Tal Rasha was injured. The Horadrim then gathered the pieces and kept the biggest one that couldnt keep Baal inside by itself, thus Tal Rasha volunteered to be kept imprisoned with Baals spirit inside him. Go read your lore.
And guess what, Mephisto was able to shatter his soulstone into pieces too! He gave the biggest piece to the head of the Zakarum Council and the others to the rest of the council members, thus making his corruption on Kurast without difficulty. Go read your lore
Q: We destroyed Diablo, how do you justify him coming back again?
A: You don''t know for sure Diablo is going back. Too complicated to answer at this point without going too much into the story.
From Medievaldragon, third news item from top on the main page. You may want to read what he writes to us now that he's actually in Paris
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
didn't diablo get resurected after the first one by possesing the warrior who defeated him?
does he need a soul to possess people? most likely... but if not then thats my guess as to how he's coming back.
"Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn.
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself."
That is the text from the official Diablo 3 site. I think the key here is the comet. If you look at the concept art you can see the comet hitting and massive armies coming from it. This is also in the trailer. I think the comet may hold an entirely new evil that we have to deal with. Which could possibly be the creature we see at the end of the trailer which is obviously not one of the Three.
I think either something new has come in the comet or it awakens new strength in an evil we have overlooked (possibly one of the Lesser Evils)
Since we know they are banking on using the seven Lesser Evils, it just makes sense that something else has to happen. I mean how much would it suck to just say..Ok you destroyed the worst of the worst...the ones badest of the bad...now you have to deal with the semi-bad guys. Something has to make them more powerful than the Three if we indeed do not interact with the brothers in D3 at all.

If Darkness Was unstoppable We'd Already Be Dead......
Hell Is unstoppable
I'm of the opinion that Diablo, Baal and Mephisto's roles will be somewhat reduced in favor of a new threat to Sanctuary, one from above and not below. Just a feelin'. I mean, HOW many times has Diablo been rezz'd, only to DIE again? I mean srsly

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.
-Excerpt from the Litany of Residuum;
As Translated by He Who Brings Order
The horns, the hole in the center of the forehead, fire, and the main point; If you saw that in real life, you would be so terrified, you would shit yourself, puke, and then fall over dead. Terrified -> terror -> Lord of Terror -> Diablo.
Besides, "The stench of Terror drifts on a bitter wind." -Quote from Leah
Now you gotta remember Diablo and his brothers were not born with soulstones, considering Sanctuary was formed while the three were still in existence. So who or what gave them the soulstones?
Maybe this was answered in the Sin War trilogy, but I haven't read it yet.

Well if you play the game, it is said from Deckard Cain that Tyrael gave the Horadrim three soulstones to imprison the three Prime Evils: Diablo was sealed in the head, Baal in the chest, and Mephisto in the back? Baal's was shattered in an attempt to capture him and Mephisto's was shattered after he was sealed, so it leaves Diablo the only one to remain fully sealed inside his soulstone
I'm guessing that they will include the other evils, namely Belial. Diablo will be there, obviously, and you never know if he will somehow get Baal and Mephisto back. Regarding the lesser evils, I have no clue, but I would like to see Duriel back, since he was a great and difficult boss to overcome, in some cases.
No way we're gonna see Duriel again, He's just a minion, not an important character.As for the evils we will have to overcome, I have no idea, we will know pretty soon when blizzard unveils a bit more stuff about the story.

Marius went to hell after baal killed him and he got PISSED and he ended up kicking everyone's asses in hell and is now running things.
