It looks like a WoW map, but with Diablo text labels on them.
Go check for yourself.
Were you dropped on your head as a child?
Holy crap! The Diablo 3 map looks so like the WoW map its SCARY! /sarcasm
It does appear, after looking at my D2 manual, that they added one island and of course the destruction of mt Arreat really messed with the Barbarian lands.
It's okay, we forgive you. A map is a map. Games and books have had them for centuries, of course it's going to look like WoW's. And Sanctuary has ALWAYS had two main continents in its lore, even before World of Warshit came out. That wasn't an influence of WoW by any stretch of the imagination.
Now, lets all take a break from all the arguing and speculate a bit about the lore. I don't know if this has been mentioned before (I didn't see it in my... brief search), but looking at the Sanctuary maps for D2 and D3 show some very interesting differences.
D2-
D2 Edited, Includes places mentioned in the Sin War Trilogy and other novels.
D3-
Mainly, two things of note I've seen. First of all, Mount Arreat has been replaced with Arreat crater. This implies the destruction of the Worldstone has done significant damage to the outlying region. You can even see that the very earth itself broke apart into 3 more pieces. Veryyy interesting.
Second, the Amazon Islands have been renamed Skovos Isles. I guess this is more of a game tidbit, but it certainly implies the Amazon won't be returning (not that many of us thought it would, seeing as how we can have male and female versions of each class).
That's basically all I noticed, besides the naming of the before unamed island of Xiansai, but there are a bunch of threads about that...
I would wager the renaming to Skovos Isles is due to the fact the Amazon is a place in the real world. They probably wanted to separate Diablo from real life a little more. Although other place names are sort of reminiscent of real global places.
I agree about the breaking apart of Mount Arreat and the surrounding lands from the destruction of the Worldstone. I mean, the final cinematic of the game showed it blowing up with at least enough force to tear apart the mountain itself...
And as is noticeable about the Xiansai island, it wasn't named in that first map...so maybe they were just leaving themselves room to grow?

It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.
I'm assuming that's the deal with Xiansai... it'll probably play an indirect role in this game, i.e. NPC's mentioning it, maybe even classes originating there...
But did you think that explosion was large enough to destroy the foundation of the mountain, not to mention the bedrock beneath? It looks like a huge mountain (though there is no way to see the scale of the map, so I don't know). I personally don't think this was a direct result from the explosion, maybe more of an after effect, seeing as how the Worldstone was basically the foundation of all of Sanctuary... Maybe the crater is where demons from hell and angels from the high heavens come into Sanctuary...
Who knows, I'm probably just reading too much into a little detail the developers added to show the evolution of the world in the 20 years gone by.
I thought the idea of the soulstones was that if it's destroyed, you die. I mean the world of sanctuary is a SANCTUARY for demons and angels that do not want to wage war against either side.
Without the Worldstone, which was created to hide sanctuary from the warring demons and angels it must be breaking down slowly or changing unexpectedly. The continents seem to be parting ways. I mean even one of the islands near Skovo is an unknown one too: Skartara
Why are Skartara and Xiansai pointed out.
I just noticed that part of the Diablo 1 map is cut out, the far east is not shown.

I doubt that has anything to do with it... at all. They just wanted Diablo 2 players to know that the Amazons came from there. Those Islands have each their own name and from that point forward were rarely called "the Amazon Islands".
Jesus these signatures.. when are we going to have the full gamplay trailer running at the signature with the "better" graphics?D
There is a skovos already in the Amazon Islands.. perhaps the amazons pretty much left to their own community and people forgot them and started to call the islands just Skovos islands?:)

Cut out compared to D3 yes, The first map is actually unedited. Many a time people have debated what was to the right of the map, now we know.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

From the map, there are 3 amazon islands, 1 of them is called Skovos, but collectively the 3 islands are called the Skovos Isles.
The maps are an interesting comparison, I bet we'll be returning to the Arreat ruins in one of the later acts, maybe 4 or 5, it should be cool to see the aftermath of the Worldstone's destruction.
I'm just glad they didn't retcon the whole map like they did when they when from WC3 to WoW.

Overall I like it.
Minor differences? The northren continent has been blown to PIECES.
Siaynoq's Playthroughs
No need to apologize for the gift that God gave you.
I'm sure people are just WoW'd over it.
Amazing.
Dude. I'm gonna say it too, It's just a map.
Who cares?
And I was referring to this:
Hm, well, let's see why that is. Oh yes, THE WORLDSTONE WAS BLOWN TO KINGDOM COME!
