Anything in red I've figured out
Why did Lazarus use stick Diablo's soulstone in a kid? Why wouldn't a monster work? Why did Diablo never enter Tristram?
Why did the hero of D1 stick Diablo's soulstone into himself, instead of burying it, or carrying it around in his pocket? (wearing it around his neck like Frodo, lol)
What does destroying soulstones in the Hellforge accomplish? Why would you want to destroy the only thing containing the Prime Evils? In D2, why were monsters crawling all over the place? Why was Andariel sent to the Citadel in between Lut Gholein and the Rogue Encampment, and who sent her? Why was Duriel hanging out in Tal Rasha's tomb? How was Baal able to control Tal Rasha's body without the soulstone? Why couldn't Marius stick the soulstone back into Tal Rasha?
What happened to Diablo and Tyrael after Marius ran? (We know what happens to Marius by playing D2, but we never find out the exact aftermath of that battle. We just know that Diablo continues on to hell, and Tyrael goes on to that place in Act 4. I think this one's pure speculation)
Has Baal's soulstone been destroyed? If not, where is it? (Pure speculation) What is the Worldstone's purpose, and exactly why did Tyrael destroy it? (See edit3)
When it was destroyed, why do you think didn't demons start crawling everywhere? (Pure speculation, as this is supposed to be a major question that will be answered in D3)
*Sin War spoiler* Did Mephisto capture Inarius before Mephisto was captured in a soulstone or after he was freed? Before
Why did the hero of D2 kill Diablo?
In the cinematic introducing Act 4, Mephisto told Diablo "Take your terror into hell!" or something to that effect. I think Mephisto wanted Diablo to regain control of hell (take it away from Belial or Azmodan, or both), and wanted Baal to corrupt/take over/destroy the Worldstone. So couldn't he have just let Diablo alone? It's not like he killed Diablo permanently (we hope) and I think Tyrael would have the sense to know that Diablo would not be killed permanently like that (we hope), so it just seems like a very dangerous detour, when they should have been going to Harrogath to defend the soulstone.
Answers, links, and speculation welcome
edit: yay cool I found stuff
"In the Diablo: Sin War trilogy written by Richard A. Knaak, it is revealed that Inarius along with other rogue angels and demons are responsible for the creation of Sanctuary and the Nephalem (Angel and demon hybrids with great power). Inarius wished a Sanctuary away from the constant battles between demons and angels as well as create his own High Heavens which would be greater than the original. However the development of the Nephalem's powers infuriated Inarius making him want to start anew by eradicating all the Nephalem. This brought him into conflict with Mephisto's daughter, his romantic partner Lilith. Due to the conflict between the two Inarius banished Lilith. This is because Lilith desired to be a tyrant with an unbeatable army under her control while Inarius wanted lowly worshipers. But before Lilith's banishment, Lilith had killed all other angels and demons on Sanctuary preventing Inarius from destroying the only sentient being left on Sanctuary, the Nephalem because Inarius did not wish isolation. And so Inarius used the Worldstone to prevent the Nephalem from developing their powers, reducing each succeeding generation's powers until they became the mere normal humans of Sanctuary. Inarius also used the world stone to mask the existence of Sanctuary from his own Angelic kind in the High Heavens. He then later created the religion Cathedral of Light to make the beings of Sanctuary worship and serve him."
This explains why the Worldstone was created. Does this mean that humans can get stronger and stronger, and regain their Nephalem powers?

A soulstone is a magical artifact, supposedly created by the forces of Heaven in order to contain those of Hell.
The ArchangelTyrael gave the soulstones to the Horadrim in order to contain The Prime Evils, Baal, Mephisto and Diablo when they roamed the world of Sanctuary during The Dark Exile. Mephisto was the first to be successfully contained in his soulstone and it was locked in a vault in the Temple of Light in Kurast the capital of Kehjistan. Baal's soulstone was partially destroyed during the battle between him and the Horadrim outside Lut Gholein, the mage Tal Rasha managed to contain Baal in one of the larger shards and then implanted the shard in his chest. He was then bound by the Horadrim to a stone in a secluded tomb so the demon could be contained within him for all eternity. Jered Cain contained Diablo in the last Soulstone and buried it beneath the Zakarum Cathedral in the town of Tristram in Khanduras.
However, due to the actions of the Arch Angel Izual, the soulstones were corrupted after Izual told the Three Prime Evils of their secrets. Over time they managed to corrupt them and influence mortals to take on their form. For Mephisto is was the Zakarum Que-Hagen who's name was Sankekur, for Baal it was Tal Rasha. From inside the Soulstone Diablo influenced and corrupted the Archbishop Lazarus who first brought him the King Leoric but the king was too strong and so Diablo inhabited the weaker body of Prince Albrecht instead. After Diablo was slain by your character in the first chapter of Diablo, your hero takes it upon himself to contain the demon and stabs himself in the forehead with Diablo's Soulstone.
The Soulstones of Mephisto and Diablo were destroyed in the Hellforge after they were slain. It is not known if Baal's partial stone was also destroyed.
A Soulstone can influence a mortal without any penetration, yet to inhabit a body so the demon can take form the Soulstone must be implanted inside the body, either within the heart or the forehead.
Mephisto's soulstone was blue, Baal's was yellow and Diablo's one was red."
This explains the purpose of the soulstones, but not why they were destroyed, or why the D1 hero stuck it in his head instead of carrying it around. Also, Baal could've controlled Tal Rasha through the corruption of his soulstone, and the fact that his soulstone was damaged. And I'm guessing Marius couldn't have stuck the soulstone back in Tal Rasha because if Diablo beat Tyrael in the fight, Diablo could easily free Baal.
edit3:
"
Since Baal corrupted the Worldstone, Tyrael decided that it must be destroyed. The full effects of destroying the Worldstone is yet to be revealed. Many speculate that Tyrael has somehow been corrupted by Baal or the corrupted Worldstone. All should be revealed in Diablo III
Even the characters in Diablo II aren't sure of what will happen now that it is destroyed, or even if it had to be destroyed in the first place. The Prophecy stated that the Worldstone would be corrupted, but apparently never actually said anything about having to be destroyed.
"
So Tyrael destroyed the Worldstone because it was corrupted - but there's a lots of holes in that, which I guess will be answered in D3.
I think the reason demons haven't been invading Sanctuary is because of the civil war between Belial and Azmodan, and in D3 one of them (the three headed one) wins. I still don't know why monsters were invading in D2 though
edit5:
Thanks to responses - when a prime evil is in his soulstone, he has large influence over people, so the hero stuck the soulstone in himself to try to contain Diablo's influence. However, this plan fails miserably, and as the hero wanders east, he slowly loses his humanity, and brings demons wherever he goes. However... why did Andariel and Duriel show up in D2? The wiki says Andariel was sent to "invade the citadel that were the passes from the Rogue Encampment to Lut Gholein." Why and who sent her? And what the heck was Duriel doing in Tal Rasha's tomb after Tal Rasha and Diablo had left?

Whoah, lots of questions. I'll try to answer them.
Why did Lazarus use stick Diablo's soulstone in a kid? Why wouldn't a monster work?
Not realyl sure, haven't played D1.
Why did the hero of D1 stick Diablo's soulstone into himself, instead of burying it, or carrying it around in his pocket? (wearing it around his neck like Frodo, lol)
Well, the explanation may vary, but it's entirely feasible that the Hero was "told" to do so by Diablo himself.
What does destroying soulstones in the Hellforge accomplish?
I am unsure about this myself, but have done some theorizing about it. Essentially though, they destroy the stones so they cannot be used as prisons anymore.
In D2, why were monsters and Lesser Evils crawling all over the place?
Because it's a game, and the players want to fight lots of demons
How was Baal able to control Tal Rasha's body without the soulstone?
The Soulstone is a prison of sorts, but is not necessary for the Prime Evil himself to exist in Sanctuary. Once the stone was removed by Marius, Baal was in control of Tal Rasha, but became free.
Why couldn't Marius stick the soulstone back into Tal Rasha?
The prison was broken, and the TalRasha solution was flawed to begin with. We don't know all the detail of his capture, but I think there was a lot of pretty magic fireworks involved when Baal was imprisoned the first time.
What happened to Diablo and Tyrael after Marius ran?
He went on to Kurast, as you clearly see when you get the and exit the docks.
Has Baal's soulstone been destroyed?
Still a subject of debate, no one knows.
What is the Worldstone's purpose, and why did Tyrael destroy it?
Read the Sin War trilogy for it's purpose, I don't want to spoil it. As for why Tyrael did as he did, no one knows.
Prime evils can only exist in the mortal world by sticking a soulstone into a mortal (non-monster) and then transforming. Destroying the soulstone would therefore prevent Prime Evils from entering Sanctuary (the name of the mortal world if I'm not mistaken).
That would be inacccurate, all three Prime Evils have been to Sanctuary without the stones multiple times.
If this is so, why did Diablo need the soulstone while he was in hell? Why did Diablo never enter Tristram?
Good question. A little help here Elfen?
Also, why did the demons and angels create Sanctuary?

It's been a long time since I've thought about this game's lore, but I'll try to say what I can. Take most of this with a grain of salt, though, as I'm apt to be wrong in on a few notes.
Why did Lazarus use stick Diablo's soulstone in a kid? Why wouldn't a monster work?
Diablo needed a physical anchor to the mortal-realm. It wasn't until Diablo actually had this anchor that he was able to bring monsters into it (So, to answer your question -- there were no monsters to stick the soulstone in until after he possessed the prince's body)
Why did the hero of D1 stick Diablo's soulstone into himself, instead of burying it, or carrying it around in his pocket? (wearing it around his neck like Frodo, lol)
Diablo would still be able to lash out at other humans "psychically" (I guess that's the right word to use), but by housing the soulstone in his/her own body the hero was attempting to hold back the deamon by sheer force of will so it wouldn't be able to harm anyone else.
What does destroying soulstones in the Hellforge accomplish?
The Prime evils (the big 3) were kicked out of hell by the Lesser Evils. They floated around (un-embodied and ethereal) Sanctuary for awhile causing terror/destruction/hate. Mages discovered what had happened, and not knowing how to just send them back to hell/not having enough power to do so, decided to trap the spirits in the soulstones.
Smashing the soulstones on the hellforge accomplishes what the mages (can't remember their specific name for the life of me) couldn't -- finally putting them back where they belong....as for the rest of the questions, well, I honestly don't know.
Just as a sidenote, I would like to throw out that anything written by Richard A. Knaak should be approached with a light touch -- a lot of things he's authored contain many contradictions of established "official" canon.

It is authenticated by Blizzard. Anything he writes is official canon, and so would logically supercede anything older, notably the games

Diablo did not enter Tristram bcuz he wanted to test a warrior strong and brave enough to survive through the catacombs and face the demon himself, so that he may have a stronger host to survive the journey east to free his brothers

first of all the soulstones contained BUT trapped the evils in the mortal plane thus never allowing them to leave (unless the 3 use their powers to open a portal to hell) so destroyin the soulstones would cast the demons out and bring them into hell

About Duriel, I was gonna say "why would Diablo and Baal care about you, they're prime evils and you're just a hero that happens to be following them," but then I realized the hero you played managed to kill Andariel (not permanently though, right?), which would be scary to demons, I suppose.
About Inarius - so Inarius was already corrupted when he made Sanctuary?

Well i dont think Andariel and all the lesser evils are Powerful and All-mighty like the prime evils, since theyre "lesser" evils so she and Duriel might have be permanently dead
Inarius- oh no, he was still an archangel but he was tired of fighting so he made up a group of angels and demons that followed him and together they made Sanctuarty
And the reason I was thinking about Baal's soulstone was that maybe it could be used against him. Say, Baal doesn't think the soulstone matters anymore because the Worldstone's been destroyed, so he goes around destroying things, and then the hero steals the soulstone and gives it to Cain, who casts a spell on it, one he's been practicing his whole life, it's not in latin or any dead language but it's in the language he speaks, it's "Stay a while and listen..." and Baal goes "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" but Baal gets sucked into the soulstone to listen to Cain's stories for all eternity.
Okay, everything before "Cain" was serious, lol

We killed Diablo and destroyed his Soulstone so that he couldn't return (atleast, that's what we think happens). It gave as much point to kill Diablo as it did to kill Mephisto, which is .. suffice to say.. pretty important.

Okay, everything before "Cain" was serious, lol
Another question:
Why did the hero of D2 kill Diablo?
In the cinematic introducing Act 4, Mephisto told Diablo "Take your terror into hell!" or something to that effect. I think Mephisto wanted Diablo to regain control of hell (take it away from Belial or Azmodan, or both), and wanted Baal to corrupt/take over/destroy the Worldstone. So couldn't he have just let Diablo alone? It's not like he killed Diablo permanently (we hope) and I think Tyrael would have the sense to know that Diablo would not be killed permanently like that (we hope), so it just seems like a very dangerous detour, when they should have been going to Harrogath to defend the soulstone.

what would require something like that to manifest in the mortal realm? alien demons?
but hopefully since the worldstone is destroyed people will get more powerful and be able to stop the prime evils
