Alright, according to D2, Baal corrupted the Worldstone. Perhaps by doing this he was able to put the spirits of the Prime Evils inside or atleast Diablo's. So when the Worldstone was broken it released the essence of Diablo or perhaps created a new soulstone for him.

The only Prime Evil's soul Baal had access to was his own. Diablo and Mephisto's were alread sent back to their birthing Abyss prior to Act V at the end of Act IV in D2.
the worldstone's use was to cloak Sanctuary from the demons and angels view. by destroying it all it did was allow demons and angels enter the mortal realm more easily. I don't know if that applies to the abyss where meph and D now spend their time playing 20 questions.

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
Well then I think I'd be pretty pissed that Tyrael made me waste my time killing Diablo and Mephisto only to have them come back and screw our world up again.
Yes but Baal was the most powerful and might be able to do more than what was shown in game.
Baal wasn't the most powerful. Truly we don't know who's the most powerful, Baal just evaded the Hero's and Tyreal for longer than Mephisto and Diablo.
And I doubt this theory, but they will bring at least Diablo back. I know this.
I've always considered Diablo to be the most powerful.
Mainly because he gives the series its namesake.
But I think in reality, they are all suppose to be equal in power. You have to look at the fact that they all ruled hell together. If one was more powerful than the other, do you think demons would really care if they were brothers?? They would probably want to take all rule of hell for themselves.
Mephisto was slain first, because he stayed behind to gaurd the portal into Hell, to prevent the hero's from following.
Diablo next, because the hero's followed his trial, because Baal seemed to have vanished.
Baal last, because he turned up when he marched upon the World Stone.
How powerful each one was in gameplay statistics doesn't really matter.
Well, since each time we kill Diablo or any other demon, all we did was destroy their mortal shell.
So they can come back anytime they find a suitable host. Isn't the soulstones are just a host for each of the prime...one that let them invade a mortal body and take over?
Now that the barrier is down (worldstone), I don't think D and his bros need the soulstone anymore.
You know, that bring up another question. How did Tyrial reach Sanctuary? Isn't he on par with the Prime, an opposite of them?
I admit it, I was quite wrong. Yes I think Diablo simply is coming out of the Abyss. Take a look at the Diablo website, just above the world map you see Tyrael and a demon but in the center also looking upon Sanctuary is a different looking demon. I cannot tell if this is Diablo but if it is then some of us seriously need to sign that petition. This forum has always looked at symbollism, why should this be any different?
What if the Comet that hit the earth reopened the boundaries of Evil into HELL and with the worldstone that contained all 3 evils merged into 1 creating the ultimate DEMON 'diablo' which one can see in the trailer with the 3 heads, what if the DEMON in the trailer is like the ultimate DIABLO seeking revenge.
ON a side note, about the 3 prime evils.. who ever said their soulstones cant just be reforged... specially by.... an angel?
And Tyrael being "away" for 20 years... Hmm

It has been said... that in the end of all things... we would find a new beginning. But as the shadow once again crawls across our world... and the stench of terror drifts on a bitter wind... the people pray for strength and guidance. They should pray for the mercy of a swift death... for I've seen what the darkness hides!
... I don't think it's safe here.
Hoping for Pink Chain Lightning in D3!

Diablo died in Diablo 1
-Hero took out soulstone from diablo's head and placed it in his own
Diablo took over hero's body/soul in diablo 2
-Diablo is sent to the abyss after being slained and having his soulstone this time be destroyed at the forge
Mephisto died in diablo 2
-He is slained and his soul stone is destroyed at the forge, sending him to the abyss
Baal died in lod
-He is slained after corrupting the worldstone. No indication of what happened to his soulstone. Maybe the hero took his soulstone before fleeing the world chamber or soul stone was infused in the worldstone
Note: Izual stated that he was the one that corrupted the soulstones. Initially the soul stones were to imprison the demons. Now that the soulstones are destroyed either A. they are more freely and easily to manifest back into the mortal realm or B. never able to come back. (stuck in abyss)
Azmodan still remains
Belial still remains
Lucion (sister of Lilith) still remains
Lilith is slained in lod uber quest
duriel is slained in diablo 2
andariel is slained in diablo 2

And the Blizzard reps have said that Uber Tristram and all things relating to it are not part of the lore. (i.e. Lilith was not killed by the hero in D2) But I think that in one of the books Lilith was killed, maybe by Inarius or by his following.

Lillith was banished to the Abyss, or some kind of Void. She isn't actually dead. I don't think it is possible to literally kill a demon or angel.
But then we'd have had no game
They rebeled in the Sin War
Azmodan
Lilith
Belial
Lucion
Lilith is dead.
Or at least died once.
