Either way, you should definitely just read them yourself. There's no rush.
Yes, I agree with this. I'm in the middle of reading the books, myself, and I'd like to discover them on my own; as much as that is possible in the midst so many others who have already read them.
Hehe... I had to stop reading your druid thread this morning, Atru -- I haven't yet reached the part in the Trilogy you guys were referencing.
(sin war) ya but everyone knows that the second of trilogy's are unnecessary. i would of been ok without seeing episode 2 of star wars and the second of lord of the rings, i dont have time to drive half an hour for the 7$ book atm. so could ya just fill me in before i start the third? lol plz and tyvm

No way! A lot happens in Book 2, its definitely necessary. It deals with Lilith, while Book 3 is pretty much void of Lilith. If you want to know how Lilith ends, you have to read Book 2, or else you'll miss a big chunk of info.
lol wikipedia owns i know everything that happened in book2 now, it was a good summary and now i can start book 3.

Hollywood trilogies yes. When D3 is released, are you saying that would thus make DII and it's subsequent expansion pointless? Those games had so much more to add to the series. I couldn't imagine missing out on DII and LOD.
Legacy of Blood, The Black Road and the Kingdom of Shadow are not a true trilogy, they are more a collection of 3 stories.

i mean STORY wise. not game wise. in books and movies, the second installations aren't as necessary to see or read. im sure i will eventually get to it but i just dont have the time to go get the second, so i googled it so i can now start reading the third.id RATHER have the second to start reading but i dont :'(

leme rephrase it then. TO ME IN MY OPINION they aren't necessary. i would have been just as happy knowing what happened in episode 2 of star wars and then seeing the third one. With Diablo, now i know the story, i can INFER some things that happened that a brief summary didn't provide

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

I understand what you're saying, but I think you'll end up short-changing yourself if you apply that logic to everything out there. It does sound like you're making a fairly large generalization.
Just as a couple of examples, I think a person would be lost if they skipped The Empire Strikes Back and went right to Return of the Jedi.
Same thing with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings; you couldn't skip the middle part of the book and have a decent clue at all what was going on in the last third.

Sorry about that, we should put a put a spoiler warning over the whole story forum in my mind. It's not safe to be in here
No problem at all, Phrozen -- I can't expect everyone to cease and desist on all talk of the books until I've read them; that ain't right.
But... as long as you've mentioned a band-aid for the situation...
I think a spolier warning over the entire 'Storyline' forum would be a little too general. I was thinking yesterday about asking y'all what your thoughts would be about a subforum in here, just for the books; like the 'Spam'
subforum over in 'General Discussion.'
Think Umaro would go for it?

It really depends on what you value, or what you aim to gain. If you just want the facts, then okay, a brief summary might do it. Like if you want to know what its like in the year 2100, but don't want to know about all those 92 years in between from here till then, then okay, skipping in between is alright. But stories are different, especially these stories. They are meant to be read and enjoyed the whole way through. If Diablo 3 was about to be released and you just wanted to quickly catch up, then thats fine, but its not about to be released, at least not for another 2ish years. You actually have plenty of time to read the books. So relax, enjoy them, read it all the way through - you might as well, its a good read.
But hey, its (as always) up to you as to what you prefer.
lol but NOBODY ever caries the second book and i have the third book siting here STARRING at me begging to be read lol

I was talking about Story. Not the addition of socketed items and ethereal items. If D3 it mentions Baal being dead, since he wasn't in D1 you would be somewhat clueless as to how/when he died. You would know it was in the second game though.
Same sort of thing with Warcraft. In Warcraft III you have the ghostly apparation of Gul'dan. But without playing the second game, this character would be a bit of a mystery to you.

There's always eBay. Yes eBay.

That depends on the game now doesn't it. And whether you actually care about story or not in a game.
GTA series you would get away with it fine. The games in the series are virtually stand alone. But if you do it with a series with a hugely continuation storyline, large portions of it will not make sense.
Warcraft III mentions often in vague detail events that occured in Warcraft II. And I imagine Diablo III will do the same, so again I put it to you are you saying you could go from Diablo 1 to Diablo 3 storywise and not miss much.
And in terms of novels, I doubt I could go from Fellowship of the Ring, straight to Return of the King, and expect not to miss much.
And the same with the War of the Ancients Trilogy of Novels. I doubt you could go from 'The Well of Eternity' to 'The Sundering', all the while thinking that 'The Demon Soul' is largely pointless.

That'd be like skipping over half the Wheel of Time series of books while reading them! That's thousands and thousands of pages you're missing out on and a hell of a big chunk of story!
