Sins are pretty adaptable for the most part. You can do a number of builds. While any variation on the most popular builds may not be the most powerful, they will certain be more fun to play. But there are some basic guidelines for building a good PVM Sin.
I never really pay much attention to builds or Cookie Cutter builds. I try out different skills and pick a group of skills I want to use and build the character around that. If the build is weak I do not really care as long as I am having fun with the character. If you are playing a build or character you do not like just because it is the most powerful, I just find that horrible and boring.
Plus I like to play characters untwinked. I find it more fun but that is just me.
Trappers can be very good. I like to get Blade Fury and use it to help replenish mana. Fire Blast works really well with the build as well.
WW sin really needs item especially the runeword that gives them WW. I do not know how good it is but the range of targets are going to be limited since claws have a very short range.

Yeah I don't like the cookie cutter builds either. But I do find it valuable to learn certain things that you shouldn't do with a Sin. Like I never even knew before the contradictory properties between the Venom skill and poison charms. Stuff like that.
For this new ladder season I'll probably do another MA/Shadow hybrid but with a few changes than what I'm used to doing.
Twinked: (verb) Twinked is the action of tweaking, usually used in context of supplying new characters with gear found with other characters at the time of creation.
Untwinked characters are made from scratch, with no outside help until much later.

Seem strange. Cause most people get to trading eventually or getting stuff from their friends. It just sounds like you're saying the player is either equipped or isn't.

I have played mostly single player and that was the case at least until PlugY came along but even then I still liked to play without handing down gear.
In unmodified D2 it is more difficult to get the good gear since there are less options but for the whole the game is easier. I have played mostly mods which have for the most part new items and more options when it comes to equipment. With that said the difficulty is also raised as well.
When I played b-net before (2000-2003) I would never trade or mule items. I rarely farmed and played mostly Hardcore as well. If the character was lucky than that was good if not then the character had to look at other alternatives (gambling, crafts, buy magic).

I hate the word twinked cause it I don't know what it means.
Don't worry, it took me quite some time to find out what it is myself. Forutnately I got it somehow from the context or somebody else asked that question, I don't remember. I hate that word too since...though English is not my first language...somehow that word just looks screwed up to me. Besides, I never...eh...twink my characters anyway unless the game intentionally supports it (like Titan Quest: Immortal Throne). But I guess 'untwinked' is better than 'without gear handed down by other players or transferred from other characters'

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head!
ww sins dont work well in pvm. low phys damage, low ar, small range and monsters with 150+ stacked resists make it really slow. a hybrid trap/ww would be more feasible but again, youll find out soon that you will be using traps more than ww. chaos + rare cruel/fools claw also lose durability really fast so u need constant repairs.
but since u asked:
2/20/2/str/res/vis circlet or shako or vamp (pvm only im assuming; the circ will allow u to hit the 65fcr bp)
maras or highlords (depends on your res and if u will be favouring ww or traps)
1x raven
1x fcr/stat ring or 1x dual leech stat ring or bk/soj
arachs
enigma or bramble or fort (i always pick enigma because mobility>all + the str is absolutely life saving)
shadow dancers
trangs gloves
chaos suwayyah/feral/runic (suwayyah will give best dmg with least stat imput, but you will need to glitch your claws to hit the ias bp for trap laying, or settle for slower trap laying) try and get adds like +3ls/+3mb/+3wp
rare fools/cruel/eth elite claws that can increase your phys dmg or fury claw
inv:
9x 45 life shadow gcs or 45 life trap gcs (u can reach 4k venom/61% wp and 30+ fade or hit around 8k-9k traps, your preference)
anni/torch
10x 20/5s
thats a basic gg wwsin setup. ive got a couple on east nl and they all do decently in pvm if u have an infinity merc <- needed to break light immunes.
my ghost sin (ww based):
8k ar naturally, up to 22k with fools + angelics + demon limb
4.3k ww, about 2k phys
91% ow - ow caps at 95%
95% ds - capped, however thats using fury, so the actual proc % is much less
3.2k hp - low since i dont have life gcs
max res with fade
max trap laying ias
65 fcr bp reachable, although not needed
traps are used for fhrlock in this case
my hybrid (trap based)
2.5k ar - barely hits anything above act 2
2.8k ww, about 800 phys
91% ow
86% ds
4k hp
max res with fade
max trap laying speed
65 fcr bp
9k ls (pure trappers hit 13-14k)

Here is a good place to start researching it.
For the record I think Trapsins are pretty boring but that's just me.
