I hate to admit this, but I never really did anything with the gambling system in D2. I just read that article from IGN and the section that says the gambling system was great, but no one really knew about it, made me do a double take.
How good was it - could you find yourself with uniques and runes, or just rares?

Whoever wrote that article stopped playing D2 before long. In the early days, gambling actually had a decent chance of producing good items. Later on (don't remember which patch) the chance of getting rares was severely dropped, and the chance of getting uniques and sets become so ridiculously tiny you could waste millions upon millions with a level 10 character and still not get anything.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

thats because you are lvl 10. u need to be lvl 86+ to get high lvl items, and i think 88+ to get 2 skill ammys/circs
but you can seriously get some good stuff from gheed. belts and boots, claws, and sometimes shields.
its not a waste if you have a char made for gf. and its def not a waste if you want to get rich on bnet.

I know it depends on your level. I used lvl 10 as an example because the gold cost for gambling is very small at that level, thus further increasing my point that you cannot get uniques readily even with tons of money spent.

Oddly enough, my level 55 just got like 5 +1 skill ammy's in a row. One was even a +2 to bone/poison spells with more good mods, too bad I have a shaman.
Although I always thought the low level odds should be better than the high level odds, just because there are so many regular rune words that are all but useless when you get them. If you could get some of them at level 10-20, they might actually be useful (with the exception of a few caster type uniques, like the magefist).
early on you could get anything even as a low level. and if you had a unique you couldnt get the same, so people used to have all unique rings except for sojs to get sojs etc.
they changed it but you can still get nice stuff (at least you could till 1.10 that i was playing).
especially for rings, you could get dual leech with resistances and even some uniques (not forgetting the +28 maras i got from gambling).
overall, considering how useless gold is in Diablo 2 its a good way to keep it down and get some decent stuff.

Ya know I never knew it was possible to get a unique from gambling. I always thought it was purely impossible
In theory you can. But the chance for getting a unique is 0.05%!!! Which is just fucked up. Chance for set is 0.1%, and rare 10%. So for rares sure, but for anything else it's pointless to try.

not if you have much gold (or my luck i guess). i got quite a few uniques from gambling. about the same amount in sets too. not sure if they lowered the chances after 1.10 but it always felt like a decent way to burn some of the useless gold i got in Hell difficulty while getting some decent gear to gear up some characters i had on hardcore before i was able to decently mf.
Out of 126 million gold you'd approximately get 1 unique amulet. Those are crappy odds no matter how you twist and turn it. Now you could have gotten more, but the entire gaming population produce unique amulets at about that rate.

I've actually had decent success with gheed, but I generally stick to circlets, amulets and rings....
