"I fight for a better tomorrow not because I believe one to be necessarily forthcoming, but because I believe a better tomorrow is worth fighting for."
I haven't been scared by fictional stuff since I was little. I remember my dad letting me watch Pet Cemetery when I was 5 >.> I had to jump into my bed from 5 feet away from a year after that worrying about that little bastard being under my bed with a knife. So I wouldn't consider any of Diablo frightening, of course I was 15 when it came out so I suppose it should be expected. Stuff like the movie Jesus Camp scares me, lol.
I do echo what others are saying about loving the atmosphere in Tristram back in the day and the Butcher. I really don't feel like Diablo 2 ever even got close to touching Diablo 1 in the atmosphere department. I have much higher hopes for Diablo 3 in this area, it looks like it has already surpassed Diablo 2 and have only seen one fifth of the zones! IMHO of course.
The atmosphere I am looking forward to most with this game is the first Halloween I get to spend sitting at my computer with the cool breeze blowing through the window, a twelve pack of dark beer in the fridge, and going back and forth between handing out candy and killing monsters in Tristram cathedral.

I am a massive loser, don't let me drag you down with me.
in D1 the butcher made me crap my pants when i was little mainly the "AHH FRSH MEAT!".d2 wasnt very scary exept i got a little scared when i heard the smith "I'L MAKE WEAPONS FROM YOUR BALLS!"
It's bones, not balls.
It'd have to be the moment before entering Duriel's chamber for me..that made me shit bricks when I was younger.
Just the entrance to the Cathedral underground once you were in the first area. It was so oppressively dark (nearly impossible to see anything) that it felt as if hammers were smashing me in to a bottle or something. It was claustrophobic.
Well, for me, excessive gore isn't scary, it's childish. So when I met the Butcher, it wasn't the blood and guts everywhere that got at me, it was how fast he walked, him screaming at you, and, in addition, the dark.
The Durance, well, I think if more ambient sound effects had been added it would have been more frightening to me.
I can't say any of the areas really scare me, but as far as atmosphere here are my thoughts
D1 for sure ,like all of you have said, Tristram. The town itself, the people, just the whole feeling behind it. I really almost see it as being it's own character outright. Awesome job on capturing those feelings of despair and just a creepy vibe.
D2..I think I'd have to go with the catacombs. After all these years still always get that eerie, creepy, desolate feeling going in there. Maybe too since it is reminiscent of D1 a little no?
D3 we will have to see...I'm no doubt certain that Blizz has some awesome areas in store that will bring back those old feelings.
Haha, yeah. There were those iron rings with barbs and straps, tables with pointy play-things next to them... Hm... I wonder if it ever occurred to the Hero what would happen to him/her if he/she was caught.
Well, for me, excessive gore isn't scary, it's childish.
Thanks for calling my opinion of scary childish! In your opinion of course.
Gore reminds us of our own mortality, the possibility of death.
Darkness reminds us of the unknown, one of humanities greatest fears.
So it's only natural a room filled with dead bodies, surrounded by darkness, and filled with who knows what sort of heinous demon would come off as scary.
I fought the butcher in D1 today Luckily before I fought him I found a staff of Fire wall so I opened door and ran cast fire wall behind me I eventually had to cast fire wall and get the crap bea out of my sorcerer until he died....bastard.....lol

u could tank butcher but stack like 8 firewalls at the same time (do it away from the door so u have time to get about 4-5 up), u like that meat served burnt bitch?
personally, i find cow portal scarier than butcher's room (2nd most scary spot of diablo world) coz anywhere u run, u risk running into 40-50 cows and if they kill u, they get stuck at the portal
Anyone remember those random burning crosses from D1 ?
That sent shivers down my spine...
And I forgot all about it, but did anyone ever use infravision outside of the chamber of bone ?
I thought I was going to shit out my colon when I saw that (was much younger).

Wasn't the most frightening, but it brought back memories when I played.

Kept turning around to face more invisible bastards...
*shudders*
The butcher was the scariest character for me, but I don't think he made the whole level scarier.

Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions
I would say the durance of hate
I dont know about the butcher's room because I didnt play diablo 1 (shame on me).
