I've noticed quite a few players on these forums that are strictly classic Diablo 2 players. I used to play (of course) and love classic Diablo 2 before the expansion came, but after LoD I haven't really thought to.
So there must be a reason why classic D2 players are so loyal (for lack of a better word) to it. My question is this:
What are the pros and cons to playing either Classic or LoD?

Long, long time Diablo fan; short, short time with DiabloFans. USEast D2 Ladder/1.13 Beta: Accnt = ChezPizmo USEast WCIII Ladder: Accnt = TeeheeSprinkles A cool, unrelated video; "Dude Bids 420 on Price is Right" ("420, Bob") "I'm nasty, I'm old and a little bit ornery; I look like Patrick Stewart and sound like Sean Connery." Patch 1.13 = (click here)
What I personally like about LoD: The Druid and Assassin and the epic scope of Act V, the enlarged stash, most runewords (I'm not talking about the massively overpowered ones), the addition of tons of uniques and sets, and Sorceress Orbs and other class-specific items added in LoD.
What I liked about classic: Lack of freakishly over-powered runewords (not the lack of all runewords, only the over-powered ones).
LoD is my preferred version because I feel that what I see as bonuses outweigh the bonuses I perceive for classic.
Heh, good, it wasn't locked ^^.
Not gonna lie Magistrate, you've kicked the ass of countless thread violations, whenever I see that you're the last poster, I assume the worst.
But anywho! Back on topic.
I heavily prefer D2 LoD, classic was great, but LoD added so much to the game ^^.
For pros, I'd have to go with jewels, the extra act, the bigger stash, the better resolution, and of course, the two new classes, which actually both grew to be my favorites.
For cons, definitely runewords. While they were pretty fun, some completely ruined the game, like Enigma. Blizz pretty much murdered any kind of decent PvP experience when they added enigma. The runes also became pretty much the currency of LoD, which was somewhat annoying when you didn't have exactly what people wanted.
And for Classic, I loved how you could still gamble for uniques and set pieces, it made such a great gold sink, which was taken out with LoD. Classic also seemed much more balanced to me, I never really had many problems with imbalanced builds (with some exceptions of course, but it wasn't as bad as LoD).
But anywho, theres my 2 bits.

(said same thing with another guy in this post)
basically the pros for classic to me are
-greater and/or different challenges
-it's hard to level (so that high level becomes more meaningful)
-even with ideal gear characters have limits and can die
-hc dueling has less consequence if you get loot (because you don't have to worry about charms or regearing merc)
-the gear is unique from char to char - unless there's dupes no two people use exactly the same things
-it's a more tight knit community
-mfing is kind of more rewarding (also more frustrating) because rares are worth more than unique or set (so many are bad but the good ones are amazing)
biggest pros to lod for me are are assassin class, runewords the little ones and the "overpowered" ones (love being self reliant with teleport and bo), love act 5
edit: i know everyone is down on enigma but it's a huge plus for me.. i love to teleport. it feels like flying ><
no other game has its speed.
and i like pvp with enigma. i think it opened up a lot of more options for all the classes

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
They were so powerful back in classic, since there wasn't much uber equipment back then.
Ahh. So items overall just had better stats on em?

classic has a shorter list of affixes to spawn items with (and they're basically only the good ones) so that when you find a rare it has a better chance to be decent.
i've found some jewelry and boots on classic that i'd die for in lod

Interesting.
Let me ask you this. Which do you think is more rewarding? Not necessarily rewarding as in item wise, but just rewarding in overall fun factor.

i like classic a lot but i love assassins more, so i'm not the one to ask
if there were assassins on classic then i might play it exclusively
edit: fade (and mind blast too maybe) would be so overpowered in classic though.. so i dont think it would work

I'd have to go with LoD for fun, I dunno why but I enjoyed how hard it was to find things, it really made you work at trading and doing runs. Not to say that classic didn't involve this... but LoD needed much more work.

LoD was a disappointment for me, maybe because I just get really into the battle.net D2 before LOD came. I got to play about 8 months of the orginal Classic D2 in battle.net which was a lot different that what it is now.
LOD was somewhat fun the first 6months - 12 months but then the flaws in it made me pretty much hate it. At start all the new was fun, but after 6 months the old friends from pre-LOD started to quit playing and me and old friend decided to go back to classic which was the right choice, it was so much fun and we were at ladder as 37 level while in LOD there was almost the whole ladder 99 levels(more players yeah but also so much easier leveling).
I think LOD 1.09 was the best of LOD and would have been really nice without all the cheats and dupes and weird bugged items, so 1.08 is probably the best because there wasn't much cheats yet at that time.
1.10 changed things by A LOT. I think it made classic worse and LOD a bit better in some areas. Leveling is harder in 1.10 LOD there isn't a ladder full of 99's, only problem is BOTTING. Runewords are nice but 1.10 brought too many insane ones, I liked the 1.08-1.09 Cruel weapon stuff that was going on.(buying your weapon from shop) Rares are better in 1.10 which is good, but it is still insanely hard to find good ones in LOD.
So I still play in classic, I did make 91 sorc and 83 ama in this ladder to LOD HC too because I wanted to make a build that I really can't make work in Classic. (my sorc is charged bolt + orb) But I got tired of the sorc because he wasn't that powerful to run CS or Baal effectively (i did those solo for the quests tho which wasn't that easy) and also I didn't see it fun to MF all the time.
So I made a Barb to Classic in this season now 88? and going up slowly. I get around 1-2M exp from each river I clear depending on what mobs there are (give more urdars!) I refuse to do CS runs which would be easy exp but it is pointless because barb can't WW there so I would be basically leeching the exp from Hammerdins and Sorcs.
What I like about Classic:
+ Maybe the biggest things are the simplicity, rares being top items, challenge and smaller community.
+ I really haven't liked about Act5 much before 1.10 Act4 had more challenge in LOD than Act5 which made it quite boring place, but they made it better in the challenge area in 1.10 but I hate to fight some stupid skeletons from Act2 in Act5.
+ I really like to gamble useful things in Classic: belts, gloves, boots, rings, amus, hats, armors etc. Good mods on those rares can be really nice. In Classic you can trade many uniques for Game Gold that people then use for gambling.
+ The good old Whirlwind Barb, you don't need weapon speed for Whilrwind, it always hits with the 4fps even if you wield a slow spear. In 1.10 ww barb got nerfed tho because it doesn't get any synergy, but it still somewhat works.
+ Static field cuts down to 1% even in Hell, this allows for a high lvl static build like in the old times when you weaken the mobs with static and fast cast and then throw a few killing spells like Orbs. In 1.10 and synergies Blizzard has be come too popular tho, people don't care to static anymore because blizz kills with pure damage.
+ No permanent Mercs. This is one of the best things in Classic. I really hate that in LOD your merc can pretty much Solo the game if geared properly and even without top gear it is a really effective meat shield that can tank almost anything and also Holy Freeze aura is also really too powerful tool to get for every class. In Classic you can't equip merc and it doesn't follow you when you change acts, its a whole different thing to play sorc without your personal tank.
+ Rares, this makes every character unique, rares are the real uniques in D2, there "can't" be identical rares.
+ Cheats, there are a lot less cheat users in Classic, TPPK doesn't really work there because spell damages are very much lower. Theres not really any BOTS either since the gameplay in general is much harder and the bot can't successfully run without the character dying a lot. Also there really aren't any places where you can bot safely except mephisto maybe dunno. In HC at least it's probably non existing.
-Immunes make you suffer as a sorc, dual tree build is really not a fast killer so everyone pretty much skip cold immunes
-There are not many viable builds in classic but I blame 1.10 for that.. there used to be a lot more.
Well I have to stop the list here because gotta go for work but theres most of the stuff.
There could be even more of pros in classic but 1.10 kinda made it worse than what it was.
i like the old way mercs worked better than in LOD
you shouldnt have to rely on mercs ever for anything
i liked it better with no charms
i liked it better with no runes (therefore no op runewords lol)
i dont like how in LOD everything is balanced around runewords
which makes it nearly impossible for almost every build to solo hell without insanely crazy runewords
(even those crazy non rune word gold items arent good enough it has to be a awesome perfect set or runeword)
i dont mind sets though
the sets cost is that it takes up your equipment slots when you could have better gold items often the time
i also dont like the abusing teleport
all ppl do is teleport and skip everything and thats just boring lol
thats it for me =3
