I got my D2 and D2 LoD CD keys, I can play online now, so since I am surrounded by guru's here, I ask your opinion on how to start this game: what kind of character is good to start with, and/or build? Is there any discretion on joining certain games, or certain channels, etc? Do I aim for certain items?
On a side note: be careful with abbreviations if you want me to understand you. I don't know what "MF" means, well, actually I know what that means, at this point, but most of such abbreviations, I do not, so please include full descriptions of your abbreviations on first time.
Ooh, how fun for you. I almost feel like reinstalling my Diablo 2 right now. I can't give you a lot of technical advice on a character build. The only character I ever made an interesting build of was an Martial Arts/Shadow Assassin. But most people who make Assassins create Trap Assassins (Trapsins). They are far more powerful than my type of build, but if you're ever interesting in created a more unique build, and making the majority of people on Bnet constantly ask you why you're not a Trapsin, let me know and I'll give you the whole break down on my build. Or you can just create another boring Hammerdin.
the thing is you have to be rich to make any chars that are fun to play with and stand a chance in hell. if i were you i would try to go fireball sorc or hammerdin first. then you can mf for a month or 2 get some hrs and start actully havin fun

DIABLO = DEVIL its not supposed to be a nice game autostats are rediclous lack of pots is not welcome if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
Well, to start off fresh with d2 lod online, you would need to start off with a sorc.
1. Teleport will allow faster game finishing speed, mf speed, mf %, strong element attack (lightning, ice, or fire) and Energy shield (recommended over stacking stats on vita)
2. Sorc's have difficult time progressing through hell due to immunities, but just starting off sorc is best bet to build other favored characters such as hdins or windy druids.
If you choose to go with sorc build, let me know which kind you perfer and I can help you out greatly.

O sweet. Here's what you do. WINDY DRUID! Good first character. Max all synergies for tornado. then one into bear (he's a target) and then rest of points into oak (the life one). Uh you first skills you max are cyclone armor, tornado, twister, and hurricane.
Items:
For starting out just try to get as many +skill items as possible dont worry about your resistance to much cause ur cyclone armor has you.
When you get rich:
Mara's Kaleidoscope Amulet
2x SoJ (stone of jordan) or good Faster cast rate rings
arachnid Spider Belt
Sandstorm Trek Boots
Enigma Armor (runeword)
Hoto Weapon (heart of the oak) -flail
Spirit Monarch shield
Magefist gloves
Harlequin Crest - Shako Helmet
As for stat points just enough to strength and dexterity to use gear, then all the rest of your stat points to vitality. Good vitality is like 500 stat points (with gear).
you know how hard it is to get that first enigma thou? prob better off starting with a fireball sorc and mf the shit out of nm meph and hell andy... nm meph drops alot of hoz's and skulders... also hell andy drops some pretty decent stuff too. fb sorcs dominate andy and nm meph

Besides Hardcore, you guys, she is starting fresh, she is not going to be able to find most of this stuff nor have the items to trade for this stuff. She needs to make a mf char first. Sorcs are best bets.

Cool. Okay the key to the Martial Arts/Shadow hybrid is in the life leech. At least, the key to surviving in Hell difficulty is in the life leech. So you'll want a good array of items that gets your life leech up to at least 25 percent accumulated.
You'll hear most people say to put almost all your stat points into vitality. But since your Sin is gonna do mostly melee, you'll need a high dexterity for your attack rating. High attack rating means more likely to hit an enemy, the more you hit the enemy, the more you life leech which can very quickly replenish your life in Hell with the right amount of life leech. In Hell, I could almost be dead but then three quick hits with my claws and I'd have full life again.
Natalya's Odium isn't a good set for Trapsin, but it's likely the best for this type of build. Besides the Natalya's Mark (claw weapon) you will also want to get a good Jade Talon claw (better than Bartucs). Jade Talon has great resistance. Mine was like 48 all resistance. So simply put, get Nat's full set with a Jade Talon claw. The rings and amulets you wear can vary. But your rings usually are what gets you a lot of percentage of life leech.
Now onto skills. First with the Martial Arts, I feel that the finishing move for your charge up skill is best if it's the Dragon Claw because it utilizies the properties of both your claws.
Remember that you'll never do an exorbant amount of damage with this kind of build, but it's a great support character to go on various runs with. So it's important that you have sustainability and can stay alive. So with your Dragon Claw finishing move, you'll want your charge up skill to be the Phoenix Strike.
These will be your two primary attack skills. Left click as the Phoenix Strike, right click and the Dragon Claw.
When you upgrade your skill tree on the Martial Arts tab, the synergies gained from Fire Claw and Blades of Ice are both worth it, but I wouldn't upgrade the Claws of Thunder skill, even for its synergies.
Now onto the Shadow Disciplines. These are the skills that will greatly compliment your two Martial Arts as well as give the added bonuses needed to keep you alive.
Max out your Claw Mastery. This little guy will greatly increase your attack rating which is so critical for your life leech. I only start to really max it out though as I've reached higher levels, cause obviously you'll be wanting to contribute to other sections of your skill tree as you go along.
Burst of Speed is a great skill, but don't upgrade it much beyond 10 skill points. Because along the way you're gonna find different items for your Sin to increase your attack speed anyway. But I still like being able to rival the speed of any teleporting Sorcerer.
Weapons Block I'm a little iffy about. Like Burst of Speed, it is worthwhile except maybe add a few less points to it than you would Burst of Speed. I'm sure this skill has saved me on quite a few occasions though. With this build, I really feel it's more about defense than offense.
Avoid Fade. With all the res you'll be building with your items, Fade is just a waste of skill points.
For the added damage and to finish off those pesky Cold and Fire immunes, Venom will be a nice attribute for your claws. I wish it lasted longer when you activated it though. But it adds considerable damage to your dual weapons.
Shadow Master won't accomplish much in fighting, but it's a great decoy to help keep you alive. It usually will have more life than you and will cycle through various spells which is kind of nice. I can send my Shadow Master into a fray of enemies and attack on the outside all while they mostly focus on my Shadow Master. No need to upgrade it too much. You just want it to be able to survive considerable long while in Hell.
And here's my last bit of advice. You might want to build your Trap tree just enough to get the Death Sentry. Part of being a good support combat player is the ability to explode corpses. And the Death Sentry explodes them automatically. This is especially valuable when fighting Nihlathak. It may hurt a bit to put those skill points into the Trap tree just to get the Death Sentry, but I feel it's a good spell for sitting back and really doing some collateral damage to swarms of enemies that your friends will be attacking. At least it doesn't ever need to be upgraded though. You just get it for the Corpse Explosion and then stop there.
well all chars have a pro and cons. but what i would do is just pick a char you like and try to just have fun with him. if you want to be more specific then i would go with necromancer. its fun to summon skels to attack monsters. or what my new favorite char is. a bear druid. sorta needs high lvl gear to be awsome. but im at lvl 76 and my char can get up to 4-5k life. but just make a char you think you will have fun with. once you get bored with the char go with mf sorc. so you can find good stuff for next awsome char.
I am aiming for a bone necro and Siaynoq's char (since it looks fun). I don't want to make a character just to collect items, I am not going to play this game that long to waste all my time into collecting items...
What's nice about this particular Sin build is most people don't want that kind of Sin. So the items I speak of will not be difficult to get. They're simply not in high demand. Even the Sin Torch is not that coveted. The hardest part of completing Nat's set for me was getting the claw though. I had to do a bit of rough bartering for it. But this was fun. Because you'll notice that most people just trade for runes these days which gets boring. But when you can start negotiating one item for another, plus maybe another to sweeten the deal, it's as gratifying to get as if you got the item off of Baal himself.

I made LagSpike #4 this season, but once he got to 86 i stopped playing him and made an assassin, a hybrid, trap / kicker. She's great, specially with her very own legit perfect infinity ^^(max ed, i think its 360 or sumthing%, -55% light res and its in an Superior Eth CV| oh and if ur wondering, i put the runes in my self)
Shes found quite a few good things but last season my nec seemd to have a hunger for finding shakos off elds minions... but not eld him self lol

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
