So, anybody know how to fix it so that I can run Diablo 1 without having to turn off "explorer.exe"?
As it is now, none of the compatibility options work for it, some make it not run at all(doesn't think the cd is in). Only option to get rid of graphical issues now is to turn off explorer.exe, which isn't really bad, but more of a moderate annoyance.
Damn, I thought Windows 7 had less compatibility issues than vista... Does it really?
The only issues I had with games in vista were fixed by running the game 'as Administrator', but you probably already tried it...
I have a few problems, I can't run photoshop cs4, nor maya (the latest one).
There have also been a couple of other programs, can't remember right now though.
Okk, I didn't know about CS4, I haven't tried it yet, I'm still using CS3 and it works perfectly on my side. And I don't use/have Maya so I never tried.
Anyway, I guess I'll do the same thing than with Vista, and simply wait for Windows7 SP1 before to start using it... Probably a big part of the bugs should be fixed by then.

Yep Ivaron, that's exactly why I'm waiting for the first Windows7 Service Pack... People never stopped complaining about vista, but I got it only when the SP1 was released, and there really wasn't that much issues with it... (Except extremly excessive 'security' asking for confirmations for everything(I mean, come on... You need a confirmation for me to create a folder or rename a file in my C: ?), it worked well out of the box)
What's bothering me is that a few issues aren't noticed until kinda late after the release. Like this bug with Diablo1... There really isn't a lot of people playing Diablo1 anymore, and even more who are using Windows7, so it'll take a while before the feedback gets to Microsoft, and them to see if a fix is needed. Maybe it'll be fixed while they're working on fixing something else(an OS issue rarely affects only 1application...) but else, we'd have to wait quite a while to be able to use Diablo1 with Windows7.
Another point; you can always try to install a VM, or simply an emulation prog, install Windows Vista, or XP, or any OS that you know Diablo1 is working, and install Diablo on this machine. You should be able to run it. That's how I played Assassin's Creed with dx10 on my old XP computer before I get a new box with Vista, and it worked pretty well, it always depends on your system performances though.

In ANY way, the version of Windows7 that the OP is using is either a Release Candidate, Beta, or Pirated, so I would'nt be too surprised to face some bugs, using a version of windows that isn't yet released...
But yeah, if you do have the Virtual XP feature in your version, Stalker, it could work there.

Windows 7 is nearing the end of it's beta stage since it launches October 22nd. You can't expect the world from something that is so fresh. most operating systems are not really smooth until at least one of the service packs come out for one. XP had three and Vista so far has 2, so it is safe to assume you are asking a little to much of the new born OS right now.
Here is a link for Virtual PC and XP Mode for Windows7, which are supposed to be included with the official release of Windows7.
So yeah, maybe it's a bit early for Windows7, but you should be able to run Diablo with these 2 features(Windows XP Mode needs Virtual PC to be used, they both are downloadable on the site I linked.
I hope it helped!

I believe all versions of Windows 7 have the Virtual XP feature.
They WILL be included in the final version, for the official release, but if what I've read is true, then they aren't included in the RC and RTM versions of windows. And since both products are still in the form of 'Release Candidate', I think they haven't included them in Windows7 yet.

I run the RC version of windows 7 build 7100, i can get diablo 2 to run fine along with the mods of diablo 2 ie Eastern Sun ect. I have not been able to run diablo 1 to run right even on windows vista. I will say that it is not fair to compare this RC version to other OSes in the past because windows 7 is such a breath of fresh air. Those of you who have not tried windows 7 i can absolutely promise you it will exceed your expectations. It simply works.
Oh, btw i was having trouble getting the virtual xp thing to work or make a difference with Diablo 1 as well (Windows 7 may be in the release stage, but the virtual xp option is still in beta) however i am willing to bet that when windows 7 is actaully released it might actually work. who knows.

You have to enable some sort of virtualization thingo in the BIOS, supposedly I can't do it with my CPU (AMD 5000+), but yeah, you can't use it unless you have that enabled.
BTW, you could try running it on troubleshoot compatibility (if you already aren't).
All you need to do is right click on the icon, select troubleshoot compatibility, then just do recommended and it should run... hopefully. It usually works for me.
I'm running Windows 7 (RC build 7100 64 bit) and both Diablo 1 and Photoshop CS4 works just fine for me, only problems I'm having is that I'm unable to update the game and Hellfire is being funky. I guess I'm just lucky.
No fair, I have the same win 7 going and I have the problems.
I have not tried the virtual xp whatever. And none of the compatibilities worked...none whatsoever...
I have already beaten the game once again with my rogue, finding my beautiful windforce long war bow just before getting to diablo, so it was really fun, and no reason to try to fix it(without the "explorer.exe" fix) anymore. (:
Hey guys, not new here, but first time posting (usually just read the news :)) but I got a bit of a problem. I've installed Windows 7 recently and I can't seem to get Diablo 1 to patch with the drtl109.exe. It gives me a pop up that says "This program is used to upgrade programs through battle.net" Also, when I attempt to connect to battle.net within Diablo, it says it's looking for the fastest server for a couple of minutes then an error message pops up saying "Unable to connect to battle.net. If you are using a modem to access your service provider and are not configured for Dialup Networking, you may have to initiate the connection manually". I've allowed Diablo through my firewall, opened the ports, and when that didn't work, I disabled it completely and that didn't work either lol. So I'm stuck. Do ya guys have any suggestions?
lol i have it working on my laptop with windows 7. did you try the 255 bit color at all? im thinking that if it ran without the new patch but when you tried to install the patch that something might be affecting it there.
But i will assure you. it does work on windows 7. im not to sure how to fix it though. sorry.
Aye, it's no problem. I got it to run just fine, just can't install the patch or log onto battle.net. I have no issues connecting to battle.net with D2 or Starcraft. So I dunno. :\
