I don't believe ths belongs in the Diablo III forum, unless it's been broadened to encompass all Diablo's so I'm posting here.
Anyway, I just came out of my 16 (or so) hour gaming streak in which I played straight throught Diablo I with a warrior. I fully expected to be disappointed in some way, but I have to say I wasn't. I made a point to kill every last demon, so it turned out a bit like 15 levels of the Den of Evil, but I loved it, and after not having beaten it in probably 9 years (almost 2/3rds of my life) I couldn't remember it enough to be just nostalgic. I'm almost glad there were no acts in it, Diablo 2 had a more af a journey feel to it as you went across the whole world, but I prefere the whole descending to Hell thing than the teleporting from the jungle into the Hell. Diablo 2 should arrive at my house via order tomorrow ( or rather today, it's already morning on the east coast.) Once I'm done with that I'll write you guys an article or something...
Another point is I really see wht Blizzard meant when they said that color is your friend and it should be used to make a game with a dark game, not dark colors. Every section ( church, catacombs, caves, Hell) was downright vivid with the exception of the cataombs which were just downright boring visually speaking. What's more, all the levels had a distinct color shade over all of them, level four of the church, for example, seemed like it had a big green cloud floating over it, which made it far mor cryptic, and king Leorics tomb seemed like the whole thing was on fire. The mood they set was ideal for every individual area.
Sorry for the huge post, I'm just giving out my thoughts.
Wish I had the time to enjoy D1 like that, instead im going to have to spread my fun out over the next month or so, not that it matters quite so much since theres going to be a long wait till D3 is out.
lvl 16 rogue on my first 6 hour binge, spent alot of time trying to get the butcher down legitly. Ended up having to use a bow with knockback and half an invintory of pots. Every thing is so final in D1. its almost like HC mode in D2. no autosave, if you die you have to fight for your corpse, you cant just quit and start a new game, becasue most of your gear is lying on the floor where you managed to die.
Here's to hoping Blizz is able to take te best aspects of D1 & D2, and combine it with what they have learned with WoW and D2 battle.net to make an amazing game.
I played this game through once but a question. Wasn't there nightmare and hell levels? I didn't find out how to get there or are those only in multiplayer?
By the Way, is Hellfire worth it, or is it as bad as I've heard?
A biased opinion here (I love Hellfire): TRY IT!
It adds a new section (4 floors with new enemies) and you can play the Monk!

I also think there are Normal, Nightmare and Hell levels?

Fully agree!
I remember having a bad mood and pain in the chest when my character died in some catacombs where bats attacked me, and I spent almost an hour trying to get my gear back!
First I used whatever I had in my inventory, then I had to buy loads from Griswold until I barely managed to get the elite items from my corpse...
Probably one of the worst sensations I had in all my gaming life, I wouldn' want to feel like that again! EVER!

thats pretty funny. I randomly had a lot of free time last thursday so i installed d1 and beat it be playing mostly straight through as well. think i ended at lvl 24. Butcher took me a few tries as a warrior and a lot of pots as well legit. The game was more fun then i thought it was gonna be after so long and the walking didnt really bother me as much as i thought it would
I suck at D1, I have never been able to beat it. The last time I started it I created a multiplayer character that I just play solo with so then I can take advantage of respawning enemies. Unfortunately last night I got killed and despite trying for like an hour was unable to recover my gear.... ouch. I'm thinking I need to just look up a good warrior faq and start over. This arguably my favorite series and it's a real shame I can't even beat the first game!
Oh, and as for Hellfire, it's fun, but it doesn't really fit the Diablo universe in my opinion. It's worth checking out though if only to extend your time with Diablo 1.

I played the whole game through and never once went back to my body... just remember, the instant save feature is a massive idea, use it all the time, and when you die just reload, in hell I literally saved every time a finished a fight.

yeah if I'm playing single player I do the same, but when it's multiplayer that's not an option. The way I was playing was in a local multiplayer game. That way it's still solo, but the monsters will respawn every game.
I just plopped in Diablo after I discovered the announcing of D3 and have been working at it for a week or so. My Sorcerer is probably level 26 or 27 and i'm in the third level of Hell I think. We bought D1 7 or 8 years ago and I never was good enough to beat it, now i'm the furthest i've ever gotten! Glad I started this game up again. After I beat it i'm gonna go beat D2 for probably the 250th time of my life!
This makes me want to go and beat this game. I almost beat it, but that computer broke. I installed d1 on my new pc yesterday but have been playing onlin eonly so far. Time to start single player and beat it.

And yeah, I agree that DI is darker because it is in one dungeon the whole time, where as DII and DIII aren't (DII was more colourful than DI too).
Anyways, I really don't want to discuss colour, I just wanted to celebrate the defeat of Diablo with you lol.
