I remember back when i used to play EQ, when EQ2 was on the verge of coming out, there were many guilds that formed up before launch. I think im posting this in the right forum, but havnt heard much about new quilds for D3 yet. Anyone direct me to the right place?
Yeah I remember when waiting for WoW, there were many guilds and even alliances formed way before it was launched. I guess the fact that we dont really know if we will have guild/clan support is why there isnt much activity. And clans in D3 wont have as big a role as they would have in a mmorpg.
thats not true.. there was no clan support in D2, and yet clans were HUGE. at its peak, my clan had 250 members, where my WoW guild only has 80 (alts not included in counts). my clan in D2 had a clan match every week, and their were even ladder and league matches.
but yea, im forming a guild with my friends, once its all setup we are going to start recruiting others XD.
I'm curious about this, as well. I had trouble finding both Diablo III and StarCraft II guilds or clans. They do not seem to be actively forming, most are simply transfers from the previous games, and that is not what I am looking for.
I think ppl are waiting until there's enough info detailing the game being close to a release date, before they get motivated enough to do any guild set up. Though I remember guilds popping up everywhere within about two weeks right after D2 was announced, but back then online guilds weren't as common as they are now.
There are tons of corporations made for Infinity already, and the game is not even in beta yet.
There are also plenty of STO fleets, again, the game is not coming out too soon.
There doesn't seem to be anywhere near as much activity for SCII and DIII, is it because they are sequels or am I just blind? I'd think sequels would cause MORE guilds/clans to occur.

Clans vary, and with that vary the answers to those questions.
I usually find guilds on official websites. For instance, both Infinity and Star Trek Online have separate sections for their corporations and fleets (which represent clans or guilds or w/e). There, people announce their clans.
You usually join it by contacting the clan people via forum, email, w/e.
Gaming experience? I was in a few clans and they're cool because you always have people to play with.
Time, again, relative to the clan. Some clans are pretty free, some need you to be on at certain times.
Anyone can start their own guild.

I think it might have something to do with them being sequels, and their current iterations to still be relatively successful.
Unlike new games, there's already an established fan-base, which competes with new fans. Since all D2 sites are switching to D3 (practically), then there's already an established fan-base. However, since the previous games (SC and D2) are stil polpular, then perhaps we are not yet so keep to form clans. The new fans can't compete with us, the established fan-base, and so can't form guilds.
It's a theory of mine.

How do you generally find a guild you want to join? How do you join it? How much does it add to your gaming experience? How much time does it take up, are there "responsibilities"? Can practically anyone start their own guild, if they don't find one they want to be a member of?
All of these vary imensely from game to game, and since we don't know how D3's clan system will work, it's hard to answer how they will work once the game comes out.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Well, it might depend on how far away they are from release. As far as we know, Diablo III is still in alpha stages since that was the last update we had on that front. People might be loathe to create a guild for a game that might not come out for years. I don't know the development stage of the games you mentioned there, but it might be what's affecting it. I think once we have a tangible date for release, things will pick up on this front.
Still, I think if Blizzard had a special clan section for Diablo III and StarCraft II, there would be some interested in that.
There was a guild section for WoW before release, but I don't know how successful that turned out. I think it was pretty bad, partly because of Blizzard's poor forums.

Most likely D3 will take longer to develop than most other games currently announced.

Infinity began in 2004 and will probably be released after Diablo III. It's an indie game.
Then we have to attribute it to other fanbases I guess. Infinity, being less of a block-buster game, attracts a more specific and dedicated group, while Diablo has a large following, capable of "drowning" the new fanbase or whatever you wish to call it.

I know our clan will be in D3. However the system works. Hopefully by that time we will have alot more people. (Were low on member and activity atm lol kinda sucks) When we fix our bots I will go on mass recruiting spree and hopefully it will do something lol

And regarding clan forums...
Blizzard has something of the sort: http://forums.battle.net/board.html?forumId=12018&sid=3000
But it's pretty bleak, and it's battle.net forums, and you know what those are like... and, most of them are transfer clans. And for all Blizzard games together... o.O
Compared to this: http://forums.startrekonline.com/forumdisplay.php?f=26
With a whole fleet directory and most threads are titled with names... and nobody knows anything about that game at the moment, lol.
Or even IQFE's: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=75&board=13.0
Sometimes I think Blizzard needs to shut down its forums and restart.

FPS's and RTS's on the other hand...
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
