I'm wondering if you will be able to see your W/L/T ratio in PVP...It would be nice to see an implementation similar to Starcraft 2 with seasons and different rating divisions. I didn't really get big into WOW, but the few times I did play PVP matches in WOW I was run over by twinks who were probably laughing at my newbieness. Maybe it has changed, but I think StartCraft 2 has implemented PVP very well. I consistently stay around a 50/50 win/loss ratio.
Starcraft 2 basically used wow's system with some tweaks. You have your actual (hidden MMR) rating value and then you have what's displayed for your rating. Hidden MMR is used to match you up vs people of similar skill level. It changes after every single game. In sc2 your rank would often not change, your league would change even less, but your MMR changes after every game and then if you're consistant enough your league can change. Diablo 3 pvp is going to be like wow pvp, but with only hidden MMR. You won't be able to inspect or armory a player and see how good/terrible they are at pvp. You will always be matched vs people you're good/geared enough to 50/50 with ultimately, unless you're one of the few players at the tip top of the scale with massive win rates. If you tally up your ratio and you win more than you lose and you're not a tip top player then you haven't settled in where your character "belongs" just yet, same deal for if you're losing more than you win.
Diablo 3 is a PvM(onster) focused game, as it should be. Imo wow as an annual subs game based around gear and flavor of the month classes/class compositions is a poor example of good pvp, whereas starcraft 2 is a finely tuned, well balanced game in which everyone steps up to the plate with an equal chance of winning. That's why it doesn't bother me that diablo 3, an A-RPG based around gear is going to be PvM focused.
If they have achievements for pvp, most likely they will only represent a time investment which to any real competitive play means next to nothing, other than they've wasted more time than other players accomplishing nothing.
I do however think it cool that pvp is being added to diablo 3 to give you something to do with your characters if aimlessly grinding gear without a real purpose isn't your thing (because it sure as heck isn't mine). You can group up with a few friends and dck around, or you can buy the best items in the game, have no life at all and take something way too seriously and act like you've accomplished something.
