The question should be "what's the point in playing SC?". It's like running in DOOM 2 with godmode, there's no fun whatsoever.
Not having the fate of my character commanded by Blizzard client-server latency or in-game bug is my reason.
Yeah, i can understand it. But actually even in D2 there were <5% deaths due to lag. And that's with Alt+F4 quick exit, without it the % would be much lesser. And.. With time, death just doesn't bother you that much It's probably becoming most "enjoyable" moment... in an odd way. You find yourself stopping to play too safe and risking for the sake of moments of evading close death.
"What's the point in playing HC?"
for me its simple. I dont know how you, but I play only for fun.
1 life play... "do or die" give me 100x more adrenalin then softcore where i can die 100000 times in row.. I need feel danger "what is the next door"...
I have to admit, I really didn;t understand the point of a HC character, having never played it, and learning that the rewards "in-game" are no different. But after reading some of your posts, I think you've convinced me! It sounds like an amazing rush, because there is no reward without real risk. Thanks for the push guys, I look forward to joining the ranks.
HC is definitely not a good choice if you are a casual player who just likes to play through Diablo III once (like most people).
HC is something you start when you're bored of Diablo as it is. A friend of mine had a char level 5 and today I see him rolling an HC Barbarian. I bet he dies before level 20. He hasn't played the game at all.
Softcore is the same as "everyone is a winner" because eventually even though you may die 10,000 times you will still eventually get to inferno and clear it. Hardcore only the most ballsy and elite will ever attempt Inferno
The clear aspect of "winner and Loser" is clearly defined in Hardcore. You die, you lose, you survive, you win. Its very straight forward with no real black/white since many softcore players will claim victory in inferno even though they use cheese tactics that wouldnt even last 1 second in hardcore.
I have to say, I've never played HC in D2, so, I don't have that background that many of you have.
Still, I dont understand why would I ever play HC, so far, its only about e-penis, forgive my manners.
There are no real benefits playing HC over normal, no better items, no new secret areas, no nothing. Only a banner that you can decorate, to me, there is no point in playing HC, at all.
I know, you may think: "then don't play it", but that's not the point, I see HC as a game mode that can offer something else, but it doesn't, AFAIK.
IMHO, it lacks of a motivation to be interested enough to say: "ok, I die once, and its over", it should be more like "ok, I dice once and its over, HOWEVER, I got these things that in normal mode I dont have".
What do you think?, am I missing something?
Blizzard did state that certain items in inferno will be look more "flashy" on HC characters, to be totally honest i feel the way you do about softcore, after playing diablo 2 HC i could never go back to softcore, there was really no challenge, everything felt so pointless since there was no real consequences in anything i did, that adrenaline rush wasn't there because of it, hardcore is more strategic, cant run in guns blazing like you do in softcore, at least not in later difficulties, and after dying you get your self together and try to get furtherer then you did last time, quite satisfying.
I with you on this one, almost consider softcore as the trial period, HC brings you to the breaking point and challanges your ability to actually come through.
For me, if I play in SC, even if I get close to death and play it like I would HC, I never get the adrenaline I would in HC because I know that I won't really lose anything. There's no anxiety and thrill in SC. It's too safe.

And may the odds be ever in your favour. Emmo#2406
I played HC for my first playthrough for the "thrill" of not knowing what was coming. With 2 other friends, the first time the 3 of us set on the butcher not knowing what was going to happen ... incredible! Running around like chickens with no heads looking for a way to heal and finding out that he throws spears at you when you run away and the floors randomly burn you!
The economy is also an excellent reason to play HC: once you level a barb in SC, that's it, those items are never used again. You could have the best level 15 item in the game for a barbarian, and it would never matter after several levels. On HC, however, you save that item because if your barb dies later, you can use it again when you relevel him back up. Also, the awesome items your barb was currently wearing are now gone forever: a true item sink! As the SC economy inflates with the best gear and eventually all there is is level 60 PvP or Inferno gear with 1 or 2 stats varying, the HC economy should be fairly stable and all levels and qualities of items should be fairly consistently valued.
Fearing death adds a hell of a lot to the game for me and friends. But I also have other wussie friends that just treat the game like WoW and want to just grind to the end and be done, so I also have SC characters to play with them. Be careful when switching between modes, however, I've already lost a HC character because I was just playing SC and just charged into a ball of enemies and died forgetting I only had 1 life!
