Very short and simple question.
What is your favorite Video recording and Editing software for Diablo 3?
In your responses please include the following:
- software names
- where to get them
- the price of the software
- your personal rating
- a short review
- skill level to use the software
- tips when recording or editing
I don't plan on recording any of my beta gameplay but i will be recording and uploading videos on release
Only 2 programs are good to record atm. Fraps and Playclaw. But from my own exp playclaw has some problems with codes. So if you have HDD with fast read speed you can use fraps.
All editing is good in Sony Vegas as for me. +You can use Adove AE for creating effects.
And the last thing is to encode all your output material in H.264 codec. I can recomment MainConcept for encoding.

I've never done recording so, not trying to sound dumb but could you explain the encoding my output material in H.264 codec, how to do it and what for?
EDIT: my computer can handle anything so lag isn't an issue.
6 core processor, a 2gb video card along with 8gb ram and a high rpm hard drive.

That, my friend, is no guarantee that Fraps won't slow things down. It almost certainly will.
Step 1: Record
You can use Fraps (there may also be a way to use Xsplit to do a local recording). Your PC should be good enough. You will need A LOT of free space (hundreds of GIG) if you record multiple hours. At this stage your video is raw, it's uncompressed and therefore takes a lot of space.
Step 2: Edit
I personally use Sony Vegas well that was 5 years ago. If you never used it, it's quite friendly but if you want to do cool stuff it will still need you some time to learn.
Step 3: Encoding
Since everything is raw you will need to compress (using a codec and an encoding program) everything and make it to a reasonable size and quality. Sony vegas as an encoding part when your editing is over.
Edit: Fraps slows things down, you cannot avoid it but your computer should still manage to produce >30 fps which is enough for recording. There is no point speaking of it until you try fraps anyway.
Fraps is the best that you can find in the market atm. Yes files are big so you need HDD with around ~200mb/s read speed. Btw, when I did my last project I've used to make re-incoding after fraps. I took MainConcept and from fraps (3 gb file for exmaple) made 6 gb file with codec Uncomressed->Uncompressed Avi. Good thing was that computer had lags when was playing fraps file but no lags with new file (even its more in size). And after that I was working with that x2 files in vegas etc. No lags. Old pc. (my final project was 90gb uncompressed.)
I only used fraps for recording, it was ok. Though you should be prepared to store HUGE files, as raw video weighs a lot. Something like 20 gigs per 10 minutes or so for 1920x1080 resolution and 30fps (thats not really accurate, but gives an idea). Adobe AfterEffects is great for creating effects (check out those tutorials), Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas are popular for editing. As drk_ua_ said, H.264 is mainly used for encoding. I'd recommend to record a short (about 2 mins) video of gameplay, then try to render and upload it to get a grip, test the quality and so on. Can't give more detailed instructions because I don't know what you will actually use, but Internet offers plenty of tutorials no matter what software you pick.
As for where to get the software I'd say thepiratebay has it all. If you weren't planning on paying that is
Fraps, been using it for awhile. The only bad thing about it is that it can be taxing during gameplay and the files are huge that it produces. Otherwise there's no going wrong.
Fraps for recording
Sony vegas : Easy to use, use this for the raw editing (Cutting out boring parts, etc)
Adobe after effect : Use this to add little touches like nice transitions, captions, effects, etc. Google Video Copilot for tutorials.
Recording videos is pretty fun actually. And it doesnt take that much time to produce something decent. And if you really like it, you can do really crazy stuff with after effect.
I use FRPS which will record just about every game I've tried it on, it will also record youtube videos (which is dumb cos you can download them using free addon's) and even netflix. The files are very large. On average 3 mins is about 1GB (I'm guestimating).
then once you recorded all the FRAPS videos, I use TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress which allows you to select multiple files (avi format) and then convert them into mpeg format. The size goes from 1gb to about 120mb.
The only bad part is they don't sell TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress anymore. You'll have to get one of these 3 TMPGEnc MovieStyle ,
I bought FRAPS a few years ago and never regretted it. It does Screen shots like a dream and is full screen. So I usually do lots of screenshots as a diary of my adventures. For Bioware games, the recording is really nice. I record a whole bunch, put them all into TMPGEnc and let it run over night. In the morning I delete the original files and viola I have videos for posterity.

TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 , TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works5. But they do offer free trials so you can see which output format meets your needs.
