I have been in the beta for quite a while now. The game hums along perfectly and looks beautifull most of the time.
However, I was noticing some choppyness when too much was going on at once, so I upgraded my video card (Wanted to do that for a while now anyway) from a GTS 250 to a GTS560ti.
The game is still running exactly the same as it was on my GTS 250. It looks amazing on the load screens/menus. It looks amazing when fighting 4-8 monsters. But as soon as 3 or more obescts in the world are deystroyed or I am fighting 10 or more monsters (expecially with effects that the game hasn't seen yet in that playthrough) the game slows waaay down. Not exaclt slows down, but just skips and lags and generally has very bad performance.
I am tempted to just wait till release and hope/think that its just a beta thing, but some how I think that is not likely. Before I do any more upgrading I was hoping some one on here may have some insight for me? I am not very smart when it comes to the nit and gritty of what could be going wrong, and to my limted knowledge, I should be getting super smooth gameplay. HERE ARE MY SPECS:

So any smart people out there have some thoughts as to what might be wrong? If its not my video card (which I doubt because its brand new and on Blizzard own "excellent" list) Could it be the ram? I am using two sticks of 2 GB each ram. Maybe my processor? Could it be some setting some where is screwed up thats keeping my video card from doing all the computations it needs to do?
Hm.. Your video card should be able to handle the game just fine so unless you've got a faulty product (which seems highly unlikely since you had the same issues with your GTS 250) it is not the GPU.
As for what it could be I think the processor looks a bit suspicious. Since it's "model unknown" it's hard to tell.. both old and new CPU's can have around 3GHz clock so that doesn't say much tbh.
I don't think RAM should give those kind of problems and 4GB is plenty for Diablo 3.
What you can do is open the Process Handler (ctrl+alt+delete) and go to the Performance tab, then open D3, play some and check how the graph scales. If you see your processor max out, or close to, then that's a good indicator that it's not really coping with the game and that you'll need an upgrade.
Another explanation could also be that you have spyware or other malicious software on your computer that eats into the resources and slows it down. Consider cleaning with something like SpyBot Search & Destroy to see if there's an improvement.
And of course always make sure you have the latest drivers for your GPU (which you say you have, but it never hurts to say again :)).
Yea, I have always wondered why it says "AMD Proccessor Model unknown" on my Blizzard report.
This is from the invoice reciept (still had it in my yahoomail wahoo) about my CPU:
CPU AMD|PH II X4 945W 3.0G AM3 R - Retail
When I do a "DXDIAG" (thats about the limit of my knowledge.. hehe) it says "Proccessor Model Unkown" in there aswell, So I suppose blizzard's scanner pulls right from there.
I will certainly do what you suggest with the Proccess Handeler and see whats up.
As far as spyware, I have AVG anti virus that runs all the time and is up to date. Would the spyware be a separate thing that I would need to run? And if so, any chance you have a link to somthing that would be what you would suggest?
I could google it, but I always feel I am downloading the wrong type of thing (from the wrong places) when I search for stuff like that.
Also, if I end up needing to replace my proccessor (after I check for spyware and things like that) how easy of a proccess would that be? Is it as simple as: open up, take the old one out, put the new one in? Or would I need some help from some one on that?

Kk, I think your CPU should be able to handle D3 without much problem, it's an AMD Phenom 2 X4 945 which, while being old by today's standards still is a pretty decent CPU.
Antivirus checks for spyware as well, but it never hurts to check with different scans.
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Spybot is the program that I was talking about, try that. Remember to update the database (the included wizard should guide you through the steps pretty easily. And run that to see what results you get.
As for changing processors, it's not a huge deal and you can do it yourself. If you feel uncomfortable then you should ask around if any of your friends know how to do it or look up some guides on the web. Basically what you'd do is you open up, detach the cooler and remove the CPU then attach the new CPU and the new cooler. Depending on what CPU you upgrade to you may also need a new motherboard (intel CPUs use different CPU socket for example).
Speaking of cooling you should also check to see if some of your components are over-heating. Too much heat can also slow down your computer and cause all sorts of trouble.
Do you play in Windowed Fullscreen? Many see a drop in performance vs Windowed or Fullscreen.
Have you tried turning your antivirus off while playing D3? If you have real-time scanning enabled, it could be taking up significant resources.
Fairly typical Blizzard tech support request:
Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK
Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it all here.
As far as changing out processors...that's not the culprit here, but make sure you get a processor compatible with your motherboard's cpu socket.
So that is an awfull lot of red. Could this be the problem? If so, I have been running my computer like this for over 2 years, may I have caused damage to somthing that I cant fix? My limited knowledge was under the immpression that anthing under 70 or 80 was ok. I don't get what the "Temp 3" selection is? What on my PC is 127c?? Seems crazy high. If indeed I need to cool my system better, how would I go about doing that?

Thank you again for the help. I tried D3 again after doing all this (and restarting) and I get EDIT*** It seems to be a bit better than it was before, still stuttering when too much is on the screen at once, especially if it is objects breaking (walls and such) but its not as bad (leads me to belive the spyware was causing some of this).
The game appears to run perfectly untill too much is going on at once and then its stutterville. Come inferno.. with 3 other players.. I wouldn't stand a chance to stay alive.. cry! Must figure this out!

Nice, I'll take a look at the dxdiag after work, but at first glance everything seems ok.
Re the temp. Temp3 is a bug where SpeedTemp tries reading something that isn't there. If you peruse google, you'll see some have a negative temp there while others have shown temps upwards of 500 degrees. The rest of the temps are fine.
The screenshot of your Windows Task Manager...is that while D3 is running? If not, start up D3 as you would normally do, along with any apps you typically have in the background. Play until you see some slowdown and get screenshots of that Performance tab as well as the Processes and Applications tabs.
Hey Superfula,
Thanks again for the reply and for helping!
When I get home from work tonight I'll post some pictures of the performance and application tabs during the slow downs. Should have done that to begin with.
Glad to know the temps are ok!
I have been hoping that the problem was the beta its self also. After all (as some of my smart friends back home have said) it is a beta. I totaly agree with some of the issues I'm seeing where effects don't run smoothly the first time. That makes sense.
However, the slowdown from too many monsters or too many destrctables feels like a system issue when it happens. Maybe it isn't, and I'm not planning on doing anything else, upgradewise (besides the video card update I already did) untill I see release.
The other worry I have is that other games (The newest Might and Magic: Heroes game for example) that should run perfectly on my computer don't seem to run perfectly either. There is slow down when I have the overworld camera zoomed all the way out (too much on the screen at once).
One thing I was thinking, is that my motherboard is not recognizing my proccessor. Might I need a BIOS update? I've done some poking around and can't figure out how to even check if I need a BIOS update.
My Mother board is: MB ASUS M3N WS AM2+ GF8200 RT
Does any one know how to go about checking if there is a needed BIOS update for that mother board? I have 64bit windows 7.
I'll give updating my BIOS a try and test it with heroes 6. If that doesn't help I'll just assume that its the game and wait/cross my fingers for D3's release
Mine runs pretty crappy too. I get noticable screen lag when alot of things are on screen sometimes, and I get little hiccups when I blow up barrels or open chests, whatever. When I load a map or head to a new place, all small fps drops it seems, and some lag.
Really irritates me. Has to be the beta.
I just rebuilt my comp last week. I play Tribes:Ascend, Skyrim, BF3, (and some lesser games), all very high with 0 hiccups.
I got:
2500k(with hyper 212, runs cool)
560ti
8gb ram
And a clean as a whistle fresh Windows 7 install, and mine has noticeable skips and freezes. Its not gamebreaking, but it is very irritating, esp. since I just put the thing together and everything else runs fine.
So I dont think it is your computer. My temps are way low too.
I did manage to update my BIOs and do a clean install of my operating system. Still have the same problems with both D3 and some other games.
I'm planning on rebuilding my whole rig in the comming months now. Even though D3 likely won't take big advantage of SLI, I'll likely go with a second GTX560 and go SLI with it.
I think my problem is my Mother board is old and not really meant to be used like I'm using it. It apparently supposed to be a server motherboard. I have a smartish friend who told me that my mother board is a piece of junk. So, in my case, I am hoping that is my problem!
I wouldn't judge any system based on its performance in the beta. So don't spend too much money on something that might just be fixed with some game client tweaking or better drivers. We can't really know how the game will perform until it's released in full and drivers are optimized.
Now if you are having problem in other games then it may be your computer so I'm not going to stop you from upgrading of course. A crappy motherboard could very well be the cause of your troubles.
After deciding that all the bad performance I was getting with the system was not due to the D3 Beta, and was instead due to somthing that was beyond my ability to solve wrong with the mother Board (or who knows what else) I went ahead and upgraded the whole thing.
brand new system, 8 core proccessor, two GTx560s (Though I have SLI disabled) and the Beta runs perfectly. Aboslutly zero slow down with Tons of monsters are on the screen at one time. There is still a very slight delay on the initial graphic loads of various abilities (that is the part that apparently is a Beta issue) but as for the slow down from too much going on at once. All gone.
It was really time for a new system any ways. So I'm hoping that an i7 processor, and the SLI set up will make this one last a looooong time. Running d3 perfectly should have me covered for the next 10 years or so any way

Thanks again for the reply and for helping!
When I get home from work tonight I'll post some pictures of the performance and application tabs during the slow downs. Should have done that to begin with.
Glad to know the temps are ok!

Once again, thank you!
I've looked around the net and you certainly aren't the only one with this issue.

Have a look through those two. It sounds like something similar and there doesn't seem to be a solution there either.
Thanks again! I'll keep crossing my fingers and digging around!
Thanks for the reply!
Thanks again for the help!
I'll give updating my BIOS a try and test it with heroes 6. If that doesn't help I'll just assume that its the game and wait/cross my fingers for D3's release
Thank you again!
