D2V PvP was pretty good to be honest. LoD ruined it because without a 70 page rulebook it was unbalanced as it gets. Cheated gear was only the final nail in the coffin. Oh and don't forget about those ludicrous cross-class-skill-items. Teleport for everyone, yay! Fun!
teleport for everyone saved PvP form being "geared sorc always wins".
true end game will only become available after all content is released, all patches and expansions, so you don't have to rethink your entire game strategy every time a major change comes in and makes your build look like a shopping bag picked up by the wind.
It doesn't HAVE to be that way, though. WoW has "true end game" and it gets updated with every major patch and every expansion. There's no real reason that Diablo 3 couldn't have a "true end game" as well, as long as they continued to balance it.
Of course, they'd have to come up with something that isn't random, for once (like the boss rush idea I posted above :P)...

As much as I value balance, I'd take the D2V-era with one impossible matchup (Barb vs Sorc) over the everyone-teleports-bs of LoD any day
But keep in mind that D2 had the privilige to exist before true pvp games surfaced. Compared to DAoC, every Blizz game has crap pvp
Pylons in rifts are overrated, they have a trivial effect on GRift progress standings. Even if all things were made completely non-RNG they'd still have trivial effect.

Excuse me? A conduit pylon can be used to clear 20%+ of a rift in a matter of seconds. For some classes, it's the only way they can kill the Rift Guardian.
It's also the number one complaint about Grifts. If nearly everybody agrees that they're a problem, how can you argue that they're not?

Pff as if we need to remove them! Look at the randomized gameplay! Never again shall one complain about "one-in-the-same" with D3! Random npcs, random maps, random loot, random RGs, random size maps, random elite pack affixes, random elite pack types, random pools, and now random pylons! Genius!!!

Statistics. They're not actually significant for the standings in any long-term sense. You get a leg up in the short term, but without any real affect on what the standings will be by the end of the season.
It's like arguing because Furnace is so powerful if you luck it in the first few days of the season it should be removed. In reality it doesn't have all that significant an effect on your progress in the long term.

There is no long term. Leaderboards are going to be reset at some point. The people currently leading the leaderboards will almost certainly be leading the leaderboards when the season ends.
It's not a matter of statistics, like your Furnace argument. Pylons directly allow players to exceed the primary limit on Grift progression: Gear. At some point, you're going to have a "BiS" set of gear. It might not have absolutely perfect rolls, but it's essentially going to be as good as anyone can get. At that point, the only thing that can further your Grift progress is, you guessed it, pylons.
Now, here's the problem: We're already at this point. The people at the top of the leaderboard are among the most skilled, most geared players in the game. They've already capped their non-Pylon Grift potential. All they can do now is spend their time finding perfect rifts (with conduit pylons) and hope that they don't screw it up.
TL;DR: There is no long term. Many have already reached the gear limit and the skill limit. The only option for them to improve their Grift score is, yup, Pylons. It's a real problem.
I'm sorry, what? It's NOTHING like complaining about items being superior to other items.
The fact alone that people actively and exclussively create/open Greater Rifts and use TurboHUD to see if there's a conduit pylon around and simple LEAVE THE GAME AND CLOSE THE UNTOUCHED GREATER RIFT if there isn't one, should be enough of a pointer for even a blind and deaf person to see that Conduits are FAR too potent in greater rifts.
It changes a Rift Guardian fight from taking several minuttes to taking 4 seconds, literally 4 seconds. Yes 4 seconds.
You can get rank 1 of any class, with a completely naked character, if you can get a trial keystone of the appropriately high level and enough conduit pylons in the right positions.
I'm actually baffled that you fail to see how broken Conduit (and all other pylons, really) are in Greater Rifts.
So you mean when people use an exploit they get an unfair advantage? Really? Who would have guessed!
It's stats. Statistically anyone is as likely as anyone else to get a GRift and get a leg up. But in the long run the chance of lucking a conduit to complete a "rank 1" GRift for any given player becomes 100%, so it doesn't have any actual impact on leaderboards in anything but the short term.
The fact that people are exploiting/hacking their way through the ranks is an issue. The fact that you can get lucky is not. And yes it is comparable to especially rare legends, and no players aren't going to be able to chain conduits to rank one with anything close to actual reliability especially wit ha naked character. All the conduit in the world won't kill enemies if you have no damage stat.
I think people exploiting their way through ranks is an issue, but the bigger issue at hand (and the source of the issue) is the conduit. It's not going to matter for casual players, but when you're at the top, all you're going to want is to get that free pass. A conduit is already a MUST HAVE to reach the top grifts, because statistically no team can dish enough damage for the amount of HP found on monsters at grift 50.

But it's not unfair.
Exploiting and hacking are unfair. Class imbalance is unfair.
Conduits however are fair, they're distributed equally for everyone. The bigger issue is the need for conduits to progress in GRifts, rather than conduits themselves. But then again the point is more or less that you CAN'T reach max level rifts. Unattainable goals are the ones that people try hardest to get. At the end of the day conduits don;t have any real affect on final standings when seasons end, plenty of other things do.
Diablo 3's Endgame has been the Infernal Machine since they added it back in vanilla.
the only problem with it now is that good toons outscale the shit of them Ubers.
Yeah I have a huge problem with this. I remember my friend talking about the Ubers from D2 and how hard they were (unless you were a hammerdin) and how he spent months trying to make a Amazon who could beat them. Maybe rescaling them would be a good idea and I'd prefer if they were only available on T6 like D2 ubers were only available in Hell.
Conduits however are fair, they're distributed equally for everyone.
Everyone has the same CHANCE to get the "perfect rift." But the number of people who actually get that rift are the severe minority.
It's much like the lottery. And I don't think that anyone with any brain would argue that holding a lottery to determine the #1 spot in ANY semi-competitive environment is the right way to do it.
World Series? Nah. Just draw straws. It makes so much more sense. That's PRECISELY what Conduit Pylons push the "endgame" towards. So it doesn't matter if it's "fair" because it's absurdly-bad gameplay.
