(Note: This is probably nothing new and might have been done before somewhere on another forum, but I thought "let's do it myself", so I'm gonna post this here. Might be insightful to some, or just mildly interesting to others - then just ignore it.)
Threads about bounties like this one caught a lot of attention recently. There was also a lot of confusion because we know that bounty caches' contents are being rolledat the time you open them (bluepost), but the caches' contents should also be subject to the difficulty they've been farmed on (2.0.5 patch notes).
What caught me was this post, because if that was to be true a cache farmed on my Demon Hunter would be super unlikely to ever contain a wizard set item (it's unlikely anyways, but at least I want smart loot, right?). So... I thought let's try it out. Farmed 20 caches (normal, split-farm, non-Junger Rules - opening and killing absolutely everything). I'm sorry that I couldn't have a larger sample size but my stash is always full... blame Blizzard's ridiculous space management.
Here's pictures of the results, from 6 days copying those caches on PTR and opening them on 6 different classes: Imgur Album
Crusader: 1 leg (non-cache, Krede's Flame)
Wizard: 2 legs (both cache-only)
Monk: 1 leg (cache-only)
Witch Doctor: 2 legs (one cache-only, one non-cache - and smart loot, a Ceremonial Knife!)
Barbarian: 4 legs (1 non-cache, 3 cache-only, including a CHC RoRG... on PTR... yeah, FML but it's all for science)
Demon Hunter: 3 legs (all cache-only)
The first three I opened on T6, the last three on Normal (forgot to switch, late at night). Doesn't say anything, really, but just because anyone might ask.
Overall 13 legs from 120 caches, 10 of them cache-only; I think that's about average within the 10% cache legendary drop rate. More interesting is that if you look at all the rares, one thing is obvious:
TL;DR: All cache items are completely being rolled when you open them (type, rarity, affixes).
Keep in mind that caches have hidden flags anyways for which act they've been farmed in, so they probably have hidden flags for difficulty as well. (Although after this Reddit post I'm not doing bounties on anything other than Normal, to be honest...)
I still have the 20 caches on live, so could copy again if anyone has an interesting idea for more data, but it's more likely that I'm gonna open them because I need the space back ;-) But let me know if you think that there's a good reason to keep them and continue doing this.
Wow, I thought that the smart loot thing was all that was determined at opening? Although if a set item was cued It wouldn't work that way at all I guess.
So some incorrect info has been passed out, even by blues it seems?
TL;DR: All cache items are completely being rolled when you open them (type, rarity, affixes).
Thanks for the effort!
The part about the opening class being a decisive factor was new to me when that blue post came up. Nice to see it confirmed, no reason to do bounties on a non-DH ever again.
Also, if the quoted part wouldn't be true, you could hop onto the PTR and check out the drops before opening them on live with the right class.
We knew that caches rolled STATS according to the class you opened it with. That was confirmed. For example, a RoRG on your wizard would more likely have int (85%) than the stat of the class you farmed it with. That was known.
What was NOT known, and came up in the discussion I linked, is if not only stats, but also items were rolled at the time you opened the caches or not. And as Solmyr said, if that would've been the case, you could use the PTR to figure out drops to direct a RoRG cache to one class that needs it and the amulet to another, for example. Much like the PTR was used a long time to discover the stats of unidentified items.
TL;DR: All cache items are completely being rolled when you open them (type, rarity, affixes).
Most reasonable people expected this was the case, but thank you very much for doing enough work to disprove that the items in the cache are predetermined. It was such a silly theory because it would have meant that cache items don't roll the same way as every other item in the game. I'm glad to see that there is data to debunk it.
