You look at the game as something you play to work toward a goal. That is a fair request of a game to make - its one that I share with you. But I think the core of the Diablo series is not "lets play tonight to work toward a goal", rather a mindset of "lets play tonight to see what I get."
This is the best summary of what Diablo 3 actually is (has become?) that I've ever read.
It was nice to build a CMWW wizard just because the AH allowed you to do so, but eventually everyone was CMWW. It was similar to the Enigma desaster in Diablo 2. Diablo has gone from no trading at all (the initial Diablo 1 right after release where probably 90% of players never ever traded) over some trading (D2, where some players - though not the majority - traded) to D3V (where everyone had to trade in order to progress because the game was balanced around the AH). Now, with RoS, the game has gone back to its roots - which are before D2: there is some trading, though only very limited. Just like multiplayer wasn't a possibility for many people when D1 came out (I didn't even have Internet at the time), RoS also constrains trading in a different way, but the outcome is the same: you have a very limited pool of items available to cope for your "bad drop luck".
Here's a suggestion: if you want a specific item, team up with people who already have that item. For example, there's a wizard community which helps to make wizard-only games such that there's a significantly higher chance for you to get wizard items.
That being said, you are absolutely right when it comes to the essence of your post (and the title): the game has moved away from you. It seems that trading was the essential part for you in Diablo 2, and Blizzard just moved away from this notion of free trade. It's just their design decision. I struggle with it as well (200 hours on my wizard since RoS release and not a single wizard set bonus; 30k shards and no Wand of Woh) - but I'm fine with it. I did not trade in D2, so I survived D2 (and enjoyed it) for 10+ years even though I never owned any of the totally overpowered end-game items, let alone any high runes. The game was still fun.
Hey OP, I am a player who is very similar to you demographically. I am also in my 30s (albeit with no kids), and my play time is a lot more limited than it used to be. I also enjoyed the trading aspect of D2 (which I played a ton of in my younger days). I also agree that it's important to have a goal in the game that you feel that you are actually making progress towards rather than just a crap-shoot lottery for items.
Here is my goal: getting my character to Paragon 200, then eventually to Paragon 800. See, at P200 I will be able to max out one stat in each of the three max-out-able tabs. At P800 I'll be able to max out all of them. Once that happens, I'll consider my character ready for "end game," but until then, I'm not getting everything I can out of the character and even if I had awesome, irreplaceable items, I'd still be able to progress with Paragon levels. Along the way I am happy to find the items I find, and if they help me make those levels even faster, so much the better. I think you are ignoring the fact that in D2, for a lot of players, hitting level 99 was the ultimate goal. As long as I make 2-3 Paragon levels a day I feel like I've made progress, and that's not really very tough to do.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
If you don't enjoy the actual gameplay of the game, I don't think it's terribly likely that you'll magically start enjoying it just because you get that item you've been wanting.
Anyway, all I know about loot and RNG is that I get 10x as many legendaries post 2.0 and RoS than I did previously; and they're a lot more likely to be interesting and useful. I can't imaging buffing item availability even more when I'm already getting 20-30x as many good drops as I used to.
OK, I understand your point, basically you want trading back. But that opens the door to the third party sites selling stuff. Its kind of a trade off, and while I do miss trading I also dont miss people buying their items off of websites.
Honestly you should check out Path of Exile, the trading game there is strong as hell and you really have to understand the economy to trade effectively. It was this strong trading aspect of the game that ultimately led me to quit as I was spending HOURS bartering. D3 is better for my lifestyle as a Dad, just my 2 cents.
While PoE have strong economy, the game itself is pretty awful and unentertaining. I had 44 char there, very boring.
I think there is a fundamental issue here. Diablo is an item hunt game basically, especially since we (still) have no PvP. Yes, there are people who want X item and build Y spec around it, maybe get Z item(s) to further augment the setup. Especially people that want to maximize their setup.
However the design goal of the current Diablo 3 is to provide a reasonable means of getting loot that will enable you to progress through the game. You are supposed to find ways of making what you have work. The paragon system allows infinite free respecs in part so you can alter your setup to accommodate different builds and items.
The current design is not intended to enable every dedicated player to get XYZ items with ABC stats, thus enabling the most awe-inspiring display of carnage ever. Dedicated player, casual player, part time player, whatever.
Gambling is just a means of putting some of your loots into a specific slot, thus giving you a better chance of getting that item you want in that slot - assuming, of course, it's an item which can actually come from gambling. With the 4359 blood shards I've looted, where maybe 2000 at most were earned and spent since the Kadala buff, I've had three triumvirates and two occulus.
I don't recall now if my wizardspike dropped before or after the Kadala buff. I know my goldskin and tyrael's might both came before the Kadala buff. Only took me about 1590 blood shards before the goldskin dropped, then the very next gamble tyrael's might dropped.
So, in short, I'd say that:
A) I don't believe someone can seriously spend 5000 blood shards and get 0 legendaries. Unless maybe there is or was a bug of some kind.
As stated, the game is not designed to give you any sort of guarantees of any particular loot ... never was. Yes, you used to be able to buy or trade for items. Now you cannot. I comprehend the "I have no means of reaching my goal" concept, however... the goals should be:
1) Have fun.
2) If you continue playing, find a way to effectively farm a higher difficulty, or at least have fun(1) trying
NOT
1) Gimme my loot!
2) Yea now gimme more of what I want!
And I also get how this can be construed as an elaborate QQ response.. but.. this is the way it is.
It's like customers at work who call and ask me why they are paying for Exchange services if Outlook search doesn't function the way they want it to. What do you mean it doesn't index the second mailbox in my profile? What do you mean blah blah blah..
What I mean, sir, is that's the way it is. Either deal with it or find something else that suits you better.
I agree with the topic starter that the game feels like you're just gambling and going nowhere. When you get the right item it brings excitement, yet it fades away relatively soon after more hours of bad drops. Honestly, it reminds me of hopelessly playing one of those games you just cannot win in the casino with the only difference that you don't have to spend money in D3 to play it (per game session, that is).
As mentioned above, trading will most probably bring Chinese children into labour and the ability for players to buy items for money - two options, both of which I would certainly like to avoid.
I can only offer the following thoughts/speculations as solutions right now:
1. Remove really useless legendaries from the game (e.g. Blackthorne set for softcore players; Lithany of the Undaunted etc.). This is an aspect that really makes you go mad when you're hunting a specific item but always getting something else. It would not be so disappointing if that something else at least was DECENT. But when you get 10 of Tzo Krin's Gaze and 0 of Eye of the Storm it gets pretty frustrating.
2. Perhaps loot system should be modified a little to take into account what items you already have looted and to decrease the probability of them dropping again - or of the items with similar stats. It sucks when you get a desired item with shitty stats, it sucks even more when you get it yet AGAIN with shitty stats.
3. Scale the amount of bloodshards being dropped and gained with difficulty.
4. Give a guaranteed legendary each Act Boss when you reset quests? And make them only possible to be reset upon full completion (so that people don't abuse Butcher).
5. Make it possible for set items to be gambled at Kadala.
6. More set drops.
7. Some item types are highly unwelcome (e.g. 2-handers on monks). Somehow this needs to be worked on, either by removing an ability to use 2-handed weapons from monks, or by tuning the drops somehow. I think I have looted roughly 30% of two-handed weapons out of all my dropped legendaries and I wish they all were 1-handers.
P.S. And of course rift system improvements are essential, but this is not related to this topic.
played a month, im done with the hardcore mindset play now ... kinda same feeling as you.. I need two set pieces, that I can not trade and do not know when Ill get it ...
So now when friends call to play, I go, make a few bounty/rifts just for ''fun'' without looking for any kind of progression and get back to another game ... waiting them remove BoA items (or any other kind of GOOD buff cuz' 100% of 0 still 0, lol jk) so I can get back hardcore for this =D
undefined
Isn't that already in the game? I've gotten legendary drops from Act bosses the first time I killed them on my alts.
First time you play, yeah. But those are legendaries under level 70. As soon as you reset the quests you only get a guaranteed legendary from Malthael.
Diablo 2 was such a flawed game if there was no dupes/botters/3rd party sites there wouldn't have been many completed runewords so if you had that same system in place now you would just bring the same kind of cheaters in the game ruining it for everyone id rather stay boa but i would like them to do some competitive/skill play system so you can just grind for the most powerful legs if you have the skills to do so i think that would be a viable system over trading for me anyways i never liked pay2win/cheat2win/trade2win systems in any game.
I don't see people complaining that they don't get a Lamborghini for the first 5 races in Need for Speed, nor do I remember anyone asking for the BFG9000 to be placed on the first level of Doom. Why is it, that there are people in Diablo who feel entitled to finish the highest difficulty or gain the gear they want, regardless of the effort they put in?
You've clearly missed his point about knowing how to reach your goal and how hard you need to work for it. You know both of these things when playing the games you mentioned.
Apparently in Diablo you sit in front of a one-armed bandit and spin it. You get a jackpot, you move to a higher difficulty.
I see that ythe trading towards a goal is gone and it's something way less controllable by the player moving towards that goal.
I would suggest as a means, playing with a small group of people of good character ( if you can find one, I know of such, if you want the info) Play some bounty/rift runs and if your group is liek mine, when they get drops that aren't of worth, they ask if anyone needs. Limited trading, multiple people with multiple drops, and an increased chance towards what you're looking for while playing WITh friends. Couple this with the ability to craft/enchant and you CAN customize your gear to an extent.I also had the unfortunate problem last night f hitting the shards cap because we were knocking them down so fast. Also was three paragon points behind when I was done.I got a lot of drops, two were good for alts, one was a direct upgrade for me, NOt what I was looking for but what I found.
I played Diablo 1, Diablo 2 , etc. and I have to say I hated the damn rune words stuff. Oh, and I'm probably way outta the target demographic, I'm over 50...
I still cannot fathom that people ENJOYED or even LIKED the trading that was present in D2. The only decent and reliable trading was done OUTSIDE of the game through d2jsp. Who the heck felt it was fun to spam trade chat or go into games and spam your chat for hours on end versus actually getting to play the game? I for one did not..which was why I like many others turned to d2jsp for a better way of trading..and d2jsp is ultimately the reason diablo 2 is still alive and kicking (for the most part)
While I for one am not a fan boy of Diablo 3, I'm probably one of the more vocal people against a lot of the stupid shit and short cuts they've taken with the game, but I for one get sick and tired of people complaining about items. While the loot system certainly has its flaws and now that trading is gone, you've still got a lot of different avenues to support your efforts of getting gear. Short of them bringing back an auction house format for trading, its pretty much dead in this game regardless and I don't see blizzard changing their tune on trading outside of maybe upping the time frame for trading and MAYBE allowing you to trade with people on your friends list AT BEST.
Diablo 2 just as Diablo 3 is should be subjective based on what your overall goal is with playing the game, if you're someone who has to min-max your character and is not happy nor having fun unless you're consistently getting upgrades to further your character..perhaps diablo 3 isn't for you. The primary difference between diablo 2's itemization and diablo 3's is...the primary stat. Diablo 2's items were generic and pretty much could be used universally between each class (save class specific items). Diablo 3 changed the game by introducing primary stats...whether good or bad..it was a choice that was made to change the game up. As much as people say they have D2, and I myself who enjoyed it since day 1 up until the last time I played need to realize...there was a lot of awful flaws and limitations in the game as well.
It still blows my mind that considering there is no PVP and this game will NEVER be an e-sport, how bent out of shape people get over other players gear and successes within the game. Their experience and gear should NEVER, EVER impact your enjoyment or experience in the game, and if it does, you're clearly doing it wrong.
I've set my expectations of what I intend to get out of the game while I play (probably 2-3 hours a day perhaps) and I don't care if I can't farm t6 but I'm enjoying the game for where I am, and yeah its frustrating getting the same gear sometimes or items that aren't upgrades, but its certainly exciting when you finally do get one..and it makes it all the more enjoyable.
I'd much rather have the current system that's in place rather than a WoW style loot grab where epics fall from the sky..it really makes the game dry and bland and you'll lose interest much more quickly than you would with the current system.

Who the heck felt it was fun to spam trade chat or go into games and spam your chat for hours on end versus actually getting to play the game?
I did. I cannot tell you how much fun I had trading in D2. It allowed me to work towards specific gear that I needed to finish off a character. For example, if I needed a HoZ for my hammerdin, but could not find one farming, I could take some of the gear I did find farming, and either trade it directly for the Hoz, or for high runes/SoJ's to eventually trade for a HoZ. This way there was always progression in getting the shield that I needed as I palyed, not "let's play for a week straight and hope I get one." The trading in D2 also allowed you to come back from having a deleted account due to inactivity, to getting at least a little bit of gear able to farm Hell Meph in a rather short time.
I played RoS pretty hardcore when it came out, but I have barely touched it the past two weeks as I don't see much of a point anymore. I understand the "well play because it's fun" thing, but I play games to be challenged, and to work towards specific goals. I do NOT expect the gear that I want to just drop after two days of gameplay, but I DO want a way to be able to actively work towards acquiring said gear. Perhaps the game just isn't for me, but I completely agree with the OP on this one. I don't have all the time in the world to play like I used to, so for the few hours I can play here and there, I would like those hours to be meaningful in stepping towards reaching personal goals within the game.
I wanted the original game to be great, and I had the same hopes for RoS.
For people like me who spend way too much time gaming, I just feel that there isn't enough draw to keep going after a few weeks of heavy play. It's a bit of a disappointment for me and probably many others like me, as a lot of us had high hopes.
THIS ISNT DIABLO 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Either get used to it, or get going. Either way, I am getting so damn sick of The "D2 was much better" crap. Maybe it was. Maybe it wasnt. We are at D3, and if you dont like the way the game works, get THE HELL out for the love of all thats good!
I played WoW for 9+yrs. When WoD xpac was announced, I hated nearly everything about it. So you know what I did? I didnt go to every damn forum on the internet bitching about it. I didnt whine or pine over it. I FRIGGING QUIT! Cancelled my sub, left my guild of 3+yrs, and quit. And have absolutely no plans of going back in the foreseeable future.
Stop bitching. Stop complaining. Or just stop playing....................

THIS ISNT DIABLO 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you may have missed the point. The point is not "Diablo 2 was a better game", or even close to that. The graphics, gameplay, combat fluidity were all vastly improved by Diablo 3. However, the lack of being able to work towards specific gear/goals makes the game feel very lackluster after a few weeks of playing. That's really it.
I also played WoW for nearly 10 years, and have recently quit. However, with WoD's lack of flying and the new garrisons, I will absolutely be coming back to play. We have differing opinions, there is no need to post angrily over it.

I'm curious because everyone keeps saying ''specific goals'' or "end game" and then referencing Diablo 2. While gear in diablo 2 was easier to get in the sense that there was no primary stat, you still had to min-max and even getting some of the best high end gear could remain elusive for quite longer than it would in diablo 3. How can you not work toward your goals in diablo 3...because it takes longer than you'd like? I just don't understand the comparisons and the complaints because a lot of times, they don't even line up.
Just play a HC character. When you die, all of your goals will be reset.
It does sound like you have never played HC. You dont play HC to die, you play to survive. Even if you die your goals stay the same, you just have to work a bit harder to get to them.
This. I haven't played HC in diablo 3 but I was actively playing HC in diablo 2..I just cannot deal with the lag spikes and other bullshit in Diablo 3 that would kill my character. I'd rather 1 shot myself with iron maiden and lose my character than die due to a lag spike that's not client side.
This it what makes me laugh..if you're ''falling asleep'' or bored of the game..roll another class..or play hardcore. Hardcore completely changes the way you play, and how you gear up your character and the builds you run with (to an extent)

For people like me who spend way too much time gaming, I just feel that there isn't enough draw to keep going after a few weeks of heavy play. It's a bit of a disappointment for me and probably many others like me, as a lot of us had high hopes.
I see the line in the sand. Time to find out who I am. Looking back to see where I stand. Evolution.

I also played WoW for nearly 10 years, and have recently quit. However, with WoD's lack of flying and the new garrisons, I will absolutely be coming back to play. We have differing opinions, there is no need to post angrily over it.
This it what makes me laugh..if you're ''falling asleep'' or bored of the game..roll another class..or play hardcore. Hardcore completely changes the way you play, and how you gear up your character and the builds you run with (to an extent)
