For the record, I don't hate Diablo 3. I am just growing tired of all of the people saying that "Pay-to-Win" is justified because it is the only way they can afford to keep the servers up. This is complete non-sense. How did they keep the servers up for Diablo 2? How do they keep them up for Starcraft 2 as we speak?
Don't for even a second believe that the Real Money Auction House was put there for your protection, and not for Activision's own profits.
As far as having to pay-to-win in Diablo 2 goes? Going to go ahead and disagree with you. I was a teenager who didn't even have a credit card, and I easily beat Hell mode without it even occurring to me that I should be spending real-life money on virtual items.
Unlike Diablo 2, Diablo 3 is not so easily playable without the use of an Auction House. The problem is: this Auction House is now based on real-life currency. Anyone saying this isn't "pay-to-win" is in denial. I officially quit the game today after discovering that my friend who rage quit Inferno during Act 2 just now returned after a 2 week hiatus, spent $30 and he now out gears me despite me having spent a more significant amount of time playing, and even beating Inferno.
While you are right (the microtransactions probably aren't necessary) Comparing SCII to D3 belies your ignorance of the topic, as the only servers Blizzard host are ranking and matchmaking servers, and the entire demand Starcraft II puts on their hardware probably compares roughly to D3's login services alone.
There are literally dozens of games with no subscription fee whose server's store more information than Diablo 3. One of the more trendy ones at the moment would be the upcoming Guild Wars 2. If you would like I can list several free-to-play MMOs whose databases are more complex than Diablo 3. As far as Starcraft 2 being "too simple" the last time I checked Blizzard outsources their hosting and networking to AT&T who stated that they use HP Opteron-based servers for all of their games. Meaning the cost is virtually the same regardless of what you are using the server for. As evidenced by the large number of private servers for World of Warcraft, it's really not as complex as you like to believe it is.
While games with a population as massive of World of Warcraft do require more servers, and more money to run, you also have to take into account that most of these WoW players have paid $200.00 in game costs alone. 11 million subscribers? That's 11 million copies, and expansion packs sold. Subscription fees are "for profit," and always have been. Blizzard has never even denied this, and even said that they could go free-to-play if they wanted to.
Are you really insulting someone over opinions? You are essentially saying that the person you quoted is less of a person than you are, because they don't think the way you do. Yet you call them "Narrow Minded"?
Some people love D3 (I am in that group), other people are going to hate it and blame Blizzard for ruining a good franchise. It's fine that we can all argue our points for our side, but to blatently insult a person because of their opinions... especially when those opinions relate to a fucking game...It's ridiculous.
To an extent yes.
If his criticisms pointed out to specific issues with the game, I could accept that. But his opinion, as you put it, essentially said that NOTHING about Diablo 3 is redeemable. Essentially it is a PoS, which I disagree with completely.
You can dislike a game, you can disagree completely with all the decisions made by the team etc. But a discriminating person can still agree that it is well made. I dislike FPS games and games with 1st person view. But I can still appreciate that games like Call of Duty, etc are well made, just not for me. Borderlands was fun but the color palette did not appeal to me and I would have liked a 3rd person view.
But people dropping one liners and trying to be quip ..., people who post only to incite flame wars, that I have an issue with and my remarks stand with no apology.
Here's a thought, sell your good items on the RMAH, use said real money to buy more items for your character on RMAH. You spend $0.00 and have 2 auction houses at your disposal. These topics are so dumb. They're keeping dupes and hacks out easier because it's online only.
/end rant
So your suggestion, now that my gold is worthless, and my ability to farm gold will never compare to these bots, is to try to sell every item I am wearing on the RMAH at a 15% loss, and then hope that I am able to turn around and buy upgrades off the RMAH at a second 15% loss? What happens when I run out of items to pawn? It's not like I can go farm gold efficiently enough to buy items with gold, and flip them on the real money auction house for an actual profit. This would be virtually impossible now that the gold market has been flooded by the farming industry.
Bottom line is: You will never be able to out farm a bot. As gold value continues to decrease it will not be long before buying gold, or spending USD on items is the only method to play this game competitively.
If you run out of items to pawn you're doing it wrong. You have an endless supply at your hands. Go farm, again, that's the whole reason to play this game. If you're not playing this game to farm the shit out of it. Then you're going to be disapointed.
As butters puts it "I like Hello Kitty Island Adventure better anyway"
Bottom line is: You will never be able to out farm a bot. As gold value continues to decrease it will not be long before buying gold, or spending USD on items is the only method to play this game competitively.
Bottom line is: This is not a game to play competitively. If you're banking on D3 pvp to be competitive, then you're in for a disappointment. The rest of the game is an item farming game. I'm failing to see where you feel the need to purchase these items in order to be competitive.
What I'm understanding (and I could be wrong, only human after all) is that you're getting upset because people with more disposable income are able to advance faster than you are by purchasing items with real money from other players who, after Blizz takes their cut, then get the real money you just paid...
Farm out a few items, sell them for real cash on the AH and build up an account bit by bit. There no need to spend more money. If you're impatient enough, or feel that it's such an injustice that someone else is willing to pay for something that you aren't then I don't know what to tell you...

Obviously you haven't seen the drop rates. How many items are you wearing that actually dropped for you in-game? If the answer is 1 or above, you clearly aren't playing a melee class. Every single item I am wearing I had to buy off of the Auction House and I have nearly 300 hours played, and over 200 of that is in Inferno alone.
Ha, thanks but don't even bother Asmodias. You ask a simple question and all they can respond with is "Go play another game!" or "We don't like your kind around here!". Im still waiting for what Diablo 3 did right though. I am very open to your opinions and views, kinda curious what it is that you guys see that makes it that great. Like I said before, this is the Chrono Cross of Diablo, yea its a good game, but when looked at as it should, as a sequel to a damn great game.. it falls short for me.

How is this game not competitive? This is one of the most competitive games I've ever played, and the only game I've ever played where the exploits of others severely gimped the entire population. I could care less if you exploited gold in WoW, because you're still not going to buy most raid loot. However in Diablo 3, the loot is not a reward for in-game accomplishments, but rather something you have to find out of the auction house - which now requires your credit card.
Suggesting that I am upset because I don't have the income to purchase items myself is not only false, but childish. I play video games because they are fun. If I found out that someone else could get Rogue Legendaries in World of Warcraft for $250.00 I would be highly annoyed. I did not go through 3-4 months of questing and raiding to get my Legendary daggers because of their monetary value; I did it because it was a challenge and rewarding.
This is no different with Diablo 3. When I spend 300 hours playing my Monk, and my friend with less than 100 hours of time played spends $30 and now has better gear than I do, I feel like I wasted my time and that the game is no longer rewarding regardless of how much time I spend playing it. You could argue that I could just ignore item buyers, and mind my own business, but the reality is, I can no longer purchase items with gold because most of the items I search for have been moved to the RMAH, and what ever gold I can farm is worthless now that the market has been flooded by farmers.
I guess in your eyes, I should take my "disposable income," and throw it at the screen, and be done with Diablo 3 forever. I am not going to do this for the same reason I never hacked a character in Diablo 2. I like the idea of earning my status in a game, but when that same status can be purchased for pennies on the dollar, it really gives very little incentive to continue playing. I looked forward to Diablo 3 being a game I could spend years developing a character in, and believed that the time investment would feel rewarding, but I now realize that working a 4 hour shift for minimum wage would yield greater results than farming for 100 hours.

Exactly, it falls short FOR YOU. Not everyone is going to be happy with every game that comes out. No amount of listing things we like about the game is going to change that. You've already decided you don't like it. It's a waste of time to try to convince you otherwise, even though you seem to be asking to be convinced. Whether you intend to or not, you are simply trolling.

Man I sure wasn't aware that this forum was only open to people who like and love the same stuff. Oh what did I read in a different thread? Oh yea. Www.DIABLOFANS.com, not WWW.Diablo3Fans.com?
I posted my opinion on the matter, I asked what did Diablo 3 do right, what makes it so great and deserving of the name Diablo. You guys are so angry and pissed off haha at the fact that I have a different view then you, that you can't even name 1 thing that Diablo 3 did good. What a great game, its most blind delusional fans can't even answer a simple question on why it is good.
that you can't even name 1 thing that Diablo 3 did good.
I can run it on my school laptop and still enjoy the graphics which is awesome. Major selling point in a modern game.
Also if you cant see one improvement on d3 over d2 then you should be ignored in discussions by default because there clearly are some. If you cant see even one then you are either blinded by nostalgia or lying to make a point.
Haha, I never said there wasn't anything good in Diablo 3. I am asking you guys, the most dedicated and pissy bunch of Diablo fans I have seen, what is so great about Diablo to you, that it is worth the Diablo name.
For example, I feel the combat has been improved in D3. I like the feel of attacks, they have more weight. That is a sure improvement to the series.
Now you can run it on a laptop, cool. That is a good feature, now why is that worthy of the Diablo name? I can run plenty of great games on a laptop. What did Diablo 3 do that was / is so great?

The combat is better in D3 then in any other ARPG I have ever played (and I own ALL OF THEM).
The skills system is FAAAAAAAR better then any other I have ever used (yes, some skills could use tweaks, but the base is brilliant).
The quality of the in game animations is hands down better then any other game of this ilk.
Personally, I LOVE the art style, but this is subjective, opinions on this front will obviously differ.
The story and lore is hands down better then Diablo 1 and 2, yup, I said it.
The end game (while needing some obvious tweaks, many already confirmed to be happening this month) is hands down better then any other ARPG game I have played. (Not being able to outlevel the content)
I have religiously played D2, TQ, and TL for YEARS, I have literally THOUSANDS of hours logged in Diablo 2, easily WAS my favorite game of all time.
Yet all I want to do is play D3.
Anyone who has followed Blizzard games over the years knows that the games evolve over time, they always have, and always will, the already announced changes directly address a HUGE amount of concerns the community has brought up.
Also, to the OP, and anyone else complaining about no offline mode/RMAH.
Blizzard announced that D3 would be online only well over a YEAR ago, then shortly after, they announced the RMAH.
There is literally NO EXCUSE for not knowing about these two things, they are plastered all over their main site, every gaming website has reported time and time again on these two things.
So, if you BUY a product, knowing about these two things, you are DIRECTLY SUPPORTING those decisions, period.
Over 8 MILLION people have just voted "yes I approve" to these features, if you do this THEN bitch and whine about it after the fact, no one cares, the message is heard loud and clear at retail, and no where else. If you truly are AGAINST Online Only and the RMAH, you should have had the balls to actually stand by said convictions and NOT BUY the product, buying it is literally saying "I am ok with this".
If you want to act like you have these convictions, then actually back said convictions up, no one forced you to buy anything, if you dont have the backbone to stand behind something you say is important to you, then no one, and I mean NO ONE will care, why should they?
You obviously did not care when you bought it.
The whole reason the RMAH even exists is because of the wildly successful marketplace for Diablo 2, D2jsp funneled MILLIONS into 3rd party pockets, there is an old saying that applies DIRECTLY to this situation:
If you cant beat them, join them.
A big portion of the COMMUNITY made this happen, obviously, there are a large amount of people who WANT this, within MINUTES of the RMAH going live, a metric TON of items were sold.
Everyone can get gear in this game, EVERYONE, they are even increasing the drop rates, and nerfing the damage in Infero to make this EASIER.
They have banned thousands of botted accounts, they will ban thousands more, that right there is already more then they ever did for Diablo 2.

Ok yea the combat is better.
The skill system is....lazy. They couldn't properly balance the skills so they just threw the idea out the window and gave you everything. There are clear build winners with every cast, and the skills are "weaker"? D2 skills felt powerful, they felt like they made a difference, D3 skills feel like they were toned down and broken so that you had to use 7 skills.
Animations sure, it is 2012. So that is a big improvement.
The art style while not bad, I feel a more gothic style would of suited it better. Keep it closer to its roots, the armors look absolutely atrocious and fugly.
Story, wow..um they pretty much threw a ton of what happened in D1-D2 out and said this is what really happened. Then they gave us a ton of loose ends and questions that they most likely are never going to tie up. Id say the story was 1 of the weakest parts of the game, it felt very childish. Your guy was essentially a god, there was no losing in any scenario beside Cain, which wow...really? That is how Cain dies? Gotta be shitting me, to a no named random ass butterfly, may as well of just off'ed him in D1 if that was his fate.
End game...as of right now, there is no end game. No PvP, inferno is sad. Just because they are going to "fix" the problems, doesn't make it good. D2 had a better end game, with PvP at release, a real itemization, a real level limit, real goals. Not some fake difficulty that is really cheap mechanics in disguise.
That is great, you LOVE Diablo...then again you are also that guy who said that levels and gear make the PvP'er over skill. Also said that the leveling ladder was an indicator of PvP level apparently, so..take that for what you want. You at least made a logical response.
Online-only is DRM, bro. In a world where optimistic statistics say 50% of the game copies are illegal, you can't blame a company for trying to scure the return of their investments.
What I'd like it in return is a more stable service.
As for the RMAH, use it if you want or not. You don't have to. You can still buy things with gold or sweat. At least I don't have to come up with 100 duped SoJ's anymore.
Also, to the OP, and anyone else complaining about no offline mode/RMAH.

Skills system is "lazy"?
roflol, they are trying to make EVERYTHING viable, lazy is making trees with top end skills that dominate everything else.
Also, let them balance them FFS, Diablo 2's skills got tweaked a metric TON over the years, and there are STILL tons of unbalanced skills in D2. (you never played Vanilla D2 did you?)
Calling you out right now on a complete lack of knowledge on the Diablo story, they DIRECTLY refereance the established lore and story of D1, D2 and the Sin War trilogy.
PvP is coming, and there was no other "End Game" for D2 outside of brutally outleveling the content and the Ubers. Once PvP hits there will be dramatically more endgame in D3, I dont think you know what "endgame" means.
And FFS, I called YOU out for clearly not knowing how the ladder system even worked in D2, somehow you have warped that into something else entirely, dont put words I did not say into my mouth kid.
And again, since you OBVIOUSLY have never seriously played D2 ever in your life, gear and level DIRECTLY effects PvP in D2, yes, skill matters, but between 2 somewhat evenly skilled players, superior gear and level will always win, this is a basic reality of Diablo 2 that you seem to not comprehend. Maybe you should try and play some REAL pvp games to get an idea of what skill based gameplay actually is, lol. (its becoming clearer and clearer the only PvP/PK you did in D2 was against completely unprepared players with little to no skill in PvP, otherwise you would not be making such hilarious statements)
There's difference between being a fan and a fanboy, you're advocating everyone to be a fanboy and if you dare critize the game and point out it's flaws all of the sudden you are simply bashing the game. Not to express how displeased you are with the results but no simply to do so to spite others, really that's what you believe?
Go look up other fansites, go beyond gaming just look at sports even there die hard sport fans will not simply say but will shout if something is amis due to their dedication.
Final note, opinions don't have to be positive to be constructive, If you dislike negative comments on any subject i suggest you refrain from using any forums where anyone can voice their opinions freely.
There's a difference between being critical and being a whiner. There are plenty of people who post here and the official forums with honest analysis about what they were expecting, and why they're disappointed, and what they'd like to see done differently. Those threads tend to garner respect and foster some interesting back and forth before passing quickly and quietly off the front page. People who disagree find middle ground, see things from other people's perspectives and put forth productive suggestions that they feel might satisfy both sides of an issue.
Then there are people who have a driving need to have their petty ego's protected by by seeing other people agree with them in their nerd-rage. This is the sort of poster that cannot distinguish their own subjective opinion from an undeniable fact. "XYZ is clearly broken, and Blizzard doesn't care. They just want your muneez!" They bring nothing of value, but they drive heavy traffic because people get mad when they see blatant stupidity, and have a hard time not engaging. These threads stay on the front page for days at a time as people get invested in pointless "last word" competitions and the gravitational drama well sucks more people in constantly.
If the newspaper industry were doing better, these latter people could seek jobs as political or sports columnists. People whose job it is to put forth loud and logically incongruous arguments on a regular basis, because the awful truth about the nature of media consumption is that in the aggregate people will spend more time engaging with something stupid and offensive than they will with something thoughtful and insightful.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
And this is why no one who had read any of your previous posts wanted to post anything for you. You're not interested in discussion, or feedback. You just want to tear people down. And I'm sure I'll regret answering but here goes.
I completely disagree on Skills. I truly love the new skill design for all classes. It takes a lot more thought to create so many skills/runes, most of which are fun. And as noted by so many and as Blizzard had intended, no 2 persons are using the same build.
In D2, the skill tree was in essense a lazy attempt at leveling. +1 skill point = +5% dmg, that's lazy design today but ground breaking in 2000. Part of the reason people quit after normal in D2 was because leveling was boring if you didn't buy into the farming for gear concept. Saving skill points up to dump them into specific ones is not great design.
In D3, many more players are leveling to 60 cos it seems like it's part of the game. Also, getting new runes is fun. While it's true that some runes are lackluster, some are totally awesome and change the spell completely. Is every single rune awesome? No. But with 100+ runes per class, that's to be expected. So too is tying dmg to gear instead of char level, no one wants to manually balance 500+ skills and items as well.
From Hydra's to Time Stop, 7 sided strike to firebomb, Plague of toads to Rapid fire. there are some very unique skills I've never seen before. Each class is fun to play. Name one other game with this wealth and variety of skills. I love going to inferno and trying out a different set of skills just to see if it is viable.
Best part of it is you can switch up and use whichever skill you want without needing to reroll a new character.
And proof is in the pudding. Even in inferno, most players I've seen use different builds.
Got news for you Diablo2 Classic had no end game either and difficulity levels even in Hell were a joke. If you think comparing a 12 year old game with 1 expansion and over 13 patches vs a 1 month old game is fair then... I can't say anything.
Itemization in D2 Classic was crap too. Also, D2 had the same cheap mechanics in disguise, or did you forget elites that could be immune to up to 2 damage types.
I am not blind to D3's short comings. There are to my mind 4 glaring issues with D3. 3 being addressed and 1 hopefully in the future
(1) Stats on Legendary/Set items
(2) Lower level not dropping upgrade items
(2) Crazy Spike dmg in Inferno
(3) Only a few item Affixes are sought after for each class
As for the end game, I'm fully plan to level every character to 60. And wonder of wonders, I actually think I can create a hardcore character and get him past Nightmare, which is on my to do list, whereas in D2 it was kind of pointless to me.
And all this will hopefully last me till the expansion. (with 8 million sold, an expansion is 100% confirmed). Where I hope lessons learnt will result in more than just an inferno mode for the end game.

If you don't care what people are doing online, why do you need to "pay to win"? Just play the game without using the AH.
Really it all comes down to "I want to cheat to beat the game".
What I'd like it in return is a more stable service.
As for the RMAH, use it if you want or not. You don't have to. You can still buy things with gold or sweat. At least I don't have to come up with 100 duped SoJ's anymore.
+1, Cant say better then that!

Your Opinion.
Got news for you Diablo2 Classic had no end game either and difficulity levels even in Hell were a joke. If you think comparing a 12 year old game with 1 expansion and over 13 patches vs a 1 month old game is fair then... I can't say anything.
