Everyone and their dog is making posts about trying to get world's first 60. I'm here to tell you why its not a big deal, and suggest an alternative!
1.) No one remembers who gets the first level capped character, it will not bring you fame or E-peen. There will be many people at level 60 within days of release, and no one will give a shit about it by the end of the month.
2.) No one person will get first 60, because at least a dozen people will claim that they did it. AFAIK there's no way to prove it short of screenshots/video/other easily faked methods.
3.) Thousands of people will hit level cap within a few hours of the first person who manages it. You aren't special, you merely had the free time and perhaps a little more than your fair share of luck (IE XP shrines, finding the right path on your first try in a lot of places, etc)
Being able to invest the kind of time to reach 60 in a few days isn't an accomplishment. This is from someone who took time off work for release--I, like you, could be doing this exact thing. However, my first level 60 will probably be my slowest, since this will be my first time playing the game and I want to experience it fully. If I were to race to level 60, I would ruin the game for myself, enjoying it less in the name of a worthless goal.
Not everyone has to agree with me, but I hope some of you will be dissuaded from this stupidity and avoid ruining your first play through.
If you are looking for something more worthwhile, the first person/group to beat Inferno will probably be much more prominent, seeing as its actually a skill challenge instead of a time investment. Unlike the race to 60, Inferno is something that not everyone can do, and is a real accomplishment.
One component of that WILL be hitting level 60 quickly, but that is not THE goal, and it doesn't require that you do it first--only that you do it in a timely fashion. Skill will be the biggest component beyond that point, and the best individuals and groups will get ahead not by crunching (well, not entirely) but by being tactical and coordinating.
As an example of how this might appeal to people who ARE only interested in e-peen, its worth noting that the important and memorable "world firsts" of games like WoW were not hitting level caps, but defeating big tough raid bosses.
*Prepares for onslaught of hatred for mentioning WOW*
The point is that this leveling mentality is an artifact from the silly ladder system in Diablo 2, and the broken way the level cap operated (IE being far higher than anyone ever had any need to attain). Don't let the flaws of D2 corrupt your first experience of D3!
World first level 60 recuires preparation, knowledge, strategies, tactics, skill, good friends support and more. I think this makes it pretty interesting, same about clearing Inferno first.
First hardcore 60 and first inferno HC clear on the other hand is completely pointless epeen only achievements.
This is like saying a 100 meter sprint in 9,82 is pointless because "Anyone can run 100 meters as long as they have legs".
Simple fact that you cannot prove it is enough for me. Literally hundreds of players will hit 60 on the same day, thing is it won't break it down by minutes or hours.
Butttttt if people wanna do it, by all means go ahead.
I will be racing to 60, but not for "world first 60".
I agree though, it's pointless. To be in a race with tools such as Kripp and Athene is just plain embarrassing.
It's funny, I talked to people at work because they know I'm dying to play this game. I told them about this world first thing and they were all like, haha what a joke. This is coming from people who have real lives and don't play video games. It's actually quite amusing watching these fools continue to brag about having no lives.
Man, some people just hate fun I guess. Does it matter who wins a foot race between you and your friends? Will anyone remember who won a few years from now? You're missing the point entirely imho.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
I don't know if it's confirmed, but I assumed there's an achievement for first person of each class to 60? Either way... there's a time stamp on the lvl 60 achievement so even if they don't have a feat of strength they give out you could still prove it.
I thought it was kind of cool in WoW at least when there was a new expansion and everyone on the server got spammed once someone hit lvl 60. It's not a huge epeen thing but it's a race and some people like to go after that.
Nobody gives a shit what you're able to do on a video game.
all those sponsors... videogames being the largest entertainment industry...personal pride... sexy pixels...all the models that razer will have crowd around you making you feel socially awkward! THE CROWN OF LEORIC PLACED UPON YOUR HEAD! JAY WILSON GIVING YOU A BROSHAKE OR A MID AIR CHEST BUMP!!!!!

"...We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me
shall be my brother..."
Well, there is probably an achievement for level 60 and maybe it would be timestamped so people could verify who was first (WoW achievements show the date, but I don't think the time, so maybe not).
It is also pretty likely there will be feats of strength for being the first to level 60 (maybe one for each class). WoW had similar feats of strength even though level cap is trivial there. Feat of strength for finishing Inferno is also likely, and I think that is going to be the true race.
Just because there isn't a Diablo II style ladder doesn't mean no way to verify who has the first level 60.
I should rush through all the content as fast as humanly possible and not pay attention to any of it so I can hit level 60.

"When men are most sure and arrogant, they are commonly the most mistaken, and have then given views to passion, without that proper deliberation and suspense which can alone secure them from the grossest absurdities"
I totally agree, no one will remember if I achieved world/country/friend first level 60. However, I will definitely remember the first week I spent, taking my time, savoring the beauty of this game. And that's all that matters to me.
Everyone plays the game for different reasons. Why do people complain just because others value things differently? Aren't there bigger things to worry about?

It's not provable outside of an in-game achievement, which does not exist.
First to 60 is pointless because 1) Athene is going for it and has tons of people who will help him level as always 2) it will mean nothing since he's getting help and not earning it on his own
There is much fame and glory to be had, like whatshisface, that guy who got to level 60 first in WoW. And don't forget all about the ultra famous guy who hit level 70 first in The Burning Crusades. Unfortunately, we all remember the controversy about those two very well known people who came within moments of hitting level 80 first in Wrath of the Lich King. Luckily, the person who hit level 85 first in Cataclysm is still living off of his Gatorade endorsements so there's that.
WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW THEIR NAMES?! THIS IS IMPORTANT!
Who cares how people choose to play, it doesn't affect you.
Also, I don't think you could be more wrong saying beating inferno is more of a skill challenge then time investment. Don't get me wrong, I know it will take skill, but I can garuantee you the first group that beats inferno will have invested more time then 99% of the game population at that point.
One last thing, stop saying e-peen, it wasn't clever 5 years ago and certainly isn't now.

That about sum's it up. If they wanna go for world first, with their teams of people helping I say all the power to them. Play the game how you want, but don't expect to be any sort of e-famous for doing it.
Being the absolute first would be worthless without anyway to prove it. However, being one of the first isn't worthless as it gives you a leg up on a bunch of other people. Don't forget that the game economy is a capitalistic in nature. In other words, the more stuff you have the easier it is to get more stuff. By being at the top you get to become the top seller. By getting the newest and best thing first you get to slap an outrageous price on it, and then continue forward doing the same thing.

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"
And challenge is the main point of the game.
Isn't it ?
There are challenges and challenges.
"Drink the most poison without dying". Quite a challenge, huh?
Challenge is not the main point of the game. It's part of it, and you don't need to be a part of extravagant extra-game challenges to experience this aspect of the game.
If for you challenge is the main point of the game, maybe your priorities are messed up. Maybe you're trying to prove yourself, to love yourself based on unreal feats. Maybe it's time to work on your real life and your self-esteem.
