Tracking progress like what youve beaten so far, and a paper doll or w/e of your gear and your skill passive load out would be cool. But I'm honestly against any sort of gear score. Wayyyy too many factors; what build are you going for? Maybe a lower level legendary gives you better crit, maybe a high level rare does the same, ect.
I'll be curious to see who decides which gear is worth what, because Blizzards not about to start assigning points.
Why do people have to bash everything. Okay so a ranking site for Diablo3 is on it's way. If you don't see a reasoning for why there should be a ranking site then simply never visit that site. None is forcing you to participate.
This is one of those "if you don't like it, don't use it" discussions, right? I don't mind seething in anger over the better loot rolls others get, but that's me. I'd just be wondering "why are they wearing that perfectly rolled item instead of RMAH'ing it?"

because there are those of us who don't need to make money off of a video game to lead a comfortable existence? i don't intend to buy anything from diablo 3, but i certainly don't need to sell anything either.

Not to be a detractor but this is a brand new website run by no group that I know.
Does anyone else have issues giving them your battletag? I mean it literally links to your account and even with authenticater I'm not trusting some new site with unknown security with that info.
So you're not going to be playing multiplayer at all then?
Uhhh... Blizzard's website as far as I know does not support or endorse this diabloprogress site. Sure I'll be playing multiplayer, just not giving my info out to a random unknown site.

WoWProgress website exists for years, has about 1 million unique monthly visitors, and it's using official Battle.net API to access WoW data.
DiabloProgress is run by the same people, it's no way a "random unknown site".
Regarding BattleTag privacy, please consider following info from Blizzard BattleTag FAQ:
----- Where will my BattleTag be seen?
Your BattleTag will be seen a variety of places, and will be used to publicly identify you in the Diablo III game client (including in public chat and in groups with other players), as well as on the Diablo III forums. You can also find your BattleTag in Battle.net Account Management.

If I may drop my 2 cents here: I believe there's no point in discussing whether this is good or bad for Diablo 3 or whether or not it's useful, or even going to the old WoW vs D3 argument.
It's an idea that's probably going to happen whether we want it or not. So for those who don't like this, just chill out; and for those who like the idea, enjoy and make good use of it

As Kernel notes, your battletag is visible to other players in game and in chat. Also, it's not your login identifier (that's your email address), so you aren't surrendering login info anyway.

Some type of D3 Armory should be coming very soon, most likely shortly after D3 goes live.
Thats where they can get there information from.
Maybe which "clans" or players reached inferno or cleared what, but gear ranking?
It's not coming 'shortly'. It's in development. No timetable.

That'll keep me wondering too.. haha
