Hey guys and girls, for those playing the Beta or who may know this stuff I'm hoping someone can answer a couple of questions about D3.
I'm furious that D3 is online only. I've learned to accept it, but it seems there may be other issues for me with this system.
- Pausing. Can you pause D3? I read you cant and the closest thing to it is finding somewhere safe (town I presume) and... just standing there, which leads me to my next point.
- Autokick. Will you get kicked from inactivity? I'm married with a little girl so I'll often play games between doing the dishes, cooking diner, putting the little one to bed etc,etc and will often come and go from a game. Being kicked isnt so bad if I can save at any point, but this leads to my next point.
- Saving. Can you save at any point, or do you need to find a checkpoint? If so....
- Checkpoint Availability. I also read that sometimes checkpoints can be VERY far between... like 2 hours in some cases. More time than I usually even spend playing on a week night.
I hope all this isn't true and it seems like a bad dream. If it is, there really wont be much hope for me to D3 properly at all and I'll probably just pass on it altogether in this format.

You cannot pause the game, even when playing alone. You may always teleport back to town or take a waypoint and idle there.
No idea on autokick. I know that the game does not currently have kick functionality as far as doing it manually. Actually now that I think about it, I saw 3 people afking in a video for almost 2 hours and not only did they not get kicked, they actually still got around 2/3rds of the experience...
The game is always saving. It's basically persistent in it's saving.
From what I saw of the beta checkpoints (as far as quest progress) weren't very far apart at all. It only takes about an hour to kill the skeleton king from the start of the act to him, and that's around 4 quests I think.
It takes about 10 seconds to quit the game if you aren't in town, and you have an instant quit option if you are in town. I don't think that you will have as much problems with the game as you foresee.
Pausing works while solo
checkpoints and waypoints makes sure you can get back to your area where you left over pretty quick but if it's a waypoint into a dungeon it's pretty random where you spawn.

Yes. When playing alone, pressing "escape" gets you to the options and pauses the game for you. Going to town is pretty good too, since you get Town Portal quite early too.
- Autokick. Will you get kicked from inactivity?
Yes you are. Pretty much like in WoW, or even in Diablo II. When you stand idle too much time you get kicked. The quest progress is saved, though, so you can resume from the closest checkpoint when you get back.
- Saving. Can you save at any point, or do you need to find a checkpoint?
Character data is saved whenever there's a change, so it's like... all the time. "Save and Exit" doesn't even exist anymore, it's just "Exit". Save happens all the time.
- Checkpoint Availability. I also read that sometimes checkpoints can be VERY far between... like 2 hours in some cases. More time than I usually even spend playing on a week night.
In the beta they're pretty close to one another. Consider that the beta is about 3 hours if you explore every corner and kill every barrel (in addition to the monsters etc) and there's lots of checkpoints in it. I'd say there's a checkpoint every 10-15 minutes, but I could be a little off. Certainly not over 20 minutes, though.
Thanks for the quick response guys, that's put my mind at ease.
One more thing though...
- Whilst pausing (menu open) the game, will it boot me if I leave it alone for say... 30 minutes, or is the auto-boot thing only for when your character is just standing there idle in-game unattended?
Didn't count the time I was idle, but around 30 minutes should be right. Last time it happened to me was for the duration of a LoL game that lasted around 45 minutes.

Yes, while playing single player you can pause the game by hitting ESC.
There is a pretty long autokick, I've been idle in a game for hours before anything happened.
Well it saves every second, so whatever items you've gotten / exp ect will be saved. Your progress on your current quest however is saved by hitting checkpoints which are pretty close to each other, if not a couple minutes or so apart, so I wouldn't worry.

When paused, you're considered idle anyway.
Yeh... I know. 3 words for you... Married with Kid(s)... really cramps ya gaming style.
It's not as bad when the kids are older.
(I have 4, but the youngest is 8, oldest is 18 now.)
