Blizz ain't dumb and they played a big hand in the hype build up. They could have reined it in sooner than they did. And they should have.
We went in with expectations. Yes, they clarified that much more is to be revealed.
What went down at the opening ceremony and the "What's Next" did not at all match the crafted hype.
Not even a brief cinematic. Something enigmatic or inscrutable to feed our appetite. Just like they did with WoW Classic. I.e.: No game play. Zip. Just a really big and hyped promise that something is happening. Would have tided us over to a more substantial announcement. Would have fed the hype train. Left us both unsatisfied and yet satisfied.
What did go down? Switch does. not. count. Playable at Blizzcon does. not. count.
Immortal. Announced as a follow on from Diablo II, rather than as a prequel to Diablo III.
But - all I saw was Diablo III classes and assets. Maybe we will get some token unannounced nods to Diablo II. Not that I really saw so far. Immortal is very much in the style of Diablo III.
I like III, don't get me wrong. Bought three copies for PC/PS plus expansions.
But to hype Immortal as building upon Diablo II is a crime against my sensibilities as a long time diablo franchise fan. If it is building upon the Diablo II tradition then build it upon the Diablo II tradition.
If Immortal is built upon the Diablo III style then just say! Be honest!
So we get the big hype train. I jumped on. It gets reined back a little. Then I get insulted with a game claiming to build upon Diablo II but which looks and feels like a Diablo III clone. AND not even a hint of what is to come.
THIS was to be my first ever Blizzcon. I just sensed it was time for Diablo. All the way from Australia. Splurge the dollars. What the heck.
So very glad I didn't. So very glad.
