So I was thinking today, "what would be a good end game level or, perhaps, mini-game?"
Then it hit me. It hit me like a 20 pound brick falling out of the bed of a speeding truck.
It's Nazi Zombies gameplay meets D3 monsters. You are set in an arena against an infinite amount of demons and monsters. Levels are designated by certain monsters (like, fallen being one of them). You complete levels by eliminating wave after wave of monsters. After each level, you are given credits based on your overall level performance (this is based on a multitude of things like received damage, damage inflicted, time completed, ect.) You get credits to unlock weapons, armor, and in game abilities (not contemplated these yet). You start out with the bare necessities of your class, that's where the incentive to get credits beings. The quality of weapons and armor increase after every few levels.
As you advance through the game, the monsters increase in difficulty, and the idea behind this is that once you eliminate the last class of monsters, the ranking restarts (beginning at fallen), but the monsters have more attributes like resistances, increased damage/health, ect.
It goes on until you die. Of course, this opens the door for many more achievement possibilities.
What do you guys think? Not to toot my own horn, but I really, really like this idea.

I think this kind of mini game should be a high end quest/event, but not the high end itself. I think they can sustain a very good high by just adding a ridicolous amount of quests to do... still Diablo only needs enough content to feed the player until the level cap and maybe a little more then that. After all diablo is a game made to be REPLAYED, you're not suppose to play the same toon for a eternity... So reroll itself is already the "high end".

Actually, I don't think you should be able to hit the cap till well after you're done with everything. My reason for this is in Borderlands (while I thought it was a good game, it is easily a GREAT object lesson for Diablo, what with it being Diablo with guns). Most players hit lvl 50 (the cap before the latest expansion) WELL before they were done. Okay, they didn't hit it on the first play through, but they did well before the end of the second. This cut down on the drive to keep playing, as it didn't feel like you were accomplishing much. It didn't help that the best weapons were too easy to find (and too limited to a single fire class of weapons), but you hit the cap and were like uh...now what? Sure, some people hunted for new weapons, but a lot of other people just stopped playing.
I know that the difference between lvl 90 and 99 isn't that big, but the time difference is. It's just one more thing to achieve, and to be really hard to achieve.
Of course, all this might have been solved in BL if the best weapons were harder to find, and not just SMGs.
It's a cool idea, I like the competitive side of the concept. You know, people could challenge each other to see who can get the farthest and maybe even bet gold, gems, runes etc.. just to make things more interesting. Would also be great for anybody that gets a little tired of questing but still feels like killing shit. Blizz should really try adding new features(like this) this time around.

They need to do something like this, or regular patched in content to keep the end game fresh, imo. D3 is very re playable, but there are some that like that die hard grind of endless hours with the same toon, perfecting the gear and then using that toon to find more crap for others. If there is some version of a cool, viable, stable economy/trading scene, than only that (OP's original suggestion) would tear me away from farming. Especially if there is the possibility of tradeable loot that is hard to attain....
As a mini game the idea is just fine. But obviously the ending level shouldn't be like that. It sounds too arcadish. Granted, the last battle in LoD is also hitting you with waves of monsters before finally fighting Baal, but this is too much.

Not necessarily an end level, just a minigame all in itself.
Also, I forgot to mention that you begin with a vanilla character. No skills, just the bare necessities. You just buy loot with credits and they don't carry into your campaign character.
I want this to be a mini-game, not an extension of the campaign. It want this to be Diablo "Nazi zombies" pretty much, but it's Diablo.

The only thing I don't like is the "in game abilities". Don't we get regular experience, levels and skills?
Everything from the core game follows into this game mode. When I say "in game abilities", I'm talking about random powerups, and extremely rare "rainbow" powerups.
Also, how about multiplayer?
Of course
You can always just enjoy the arcade carnage and try builds xD It is basically the difference between SC and HC in the campaign.
WHICH IS WHAT I WANTED THIS TO BE FOR! YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE THAT GETS IT!
Guys, this game is your fucking sandbox for build creation. The increase in monster difficulty is mirroring the core game, you're actually progressing through the mini game the same way you'd progress through the campaign.
Also, you get to fight Diablo at the end of each set of waves. You reach wave 25, Diablo comes out and tries to kick your ass.
Yes, it's basically Diablo arcade, but what do you call the cow level?
