I think the Monk is more like the Paladin, I think they'll have some spells in their skill tree. Unlike the barbarian who has zero spells. I would consider him pure melee.
I'm more of a melee kind of guy, I guess... but it depends, really. In D2, I never had much appeal toward casters... because in the end you just spam one spell.
Spam one spell vs Spam melee = Melee is so much more satisfying.
Otherwise, I still prefer melee I guess. But I like both as long as I'm not just spamming the same thing all the time.
I primarily prefer melee but one augmented by casting. So basically I want to be most deadly up close, but have enchanted items or buffs. Some casting also I like to have to escape imminent deaths. Casting in my opinion should be more for combat support and defense. But using it solely for killing, it's all just too automatic to my liking. I like my combat to be more involved and manual.
Melee all the way baaaby.
ugh - it's too early to try to be funny

A caster in D2 can often just stand there and hold down the right click button and things will die. At least melee characters have to manually target their enemies. That's what I mean about combat being too automatic for a caster. It just seems kind of lazy.
I found d2 to be much more caster friendly, where everything except the fast monsters fell to your shoot n run/strafe tactics. Also, the spellcasters seemed to dispose of monster much more effectively.
Melee, for me, has only one bonus... reliability. You can just lay back, resisting everything while chopping away at the enemy forever with your hearty lifesteal. Though of course there are flaws in pleantly of cases for both, from the majority of what ive seen this is so.
For us peoplez that appreciate the pretties, spells a frikin awesum o _ O
When being a caster I don't run from danger (unless it's ligthing enchanted extrafast extrastrong multiple shot unique with several immunities), sort of like a melee caster. Not the most succesfull type im sure but I do feel ballsy after a stand.
Obviously don't try that on Hardcore, though, unless you have lots of time to be sent to the sh!tter.
Otherwise, if it werent because of the cool spells, i'd have to go with melee.

For most RPGs I am a melee fan myself. Although for Diablo I seem to like casters. All depends on the game I suppose.

Umm this is kind of missing half a dozen play styles isn't it? I prefer summoning while getting into the thick of the fight myself. That combination doesn't work with your two available choices.

I would say thats a caster. You're summoning for the most part I presume.
In DII and LOD, yeah summoning I guess (I don't really consider that a caster since you aren't actually dealing any damage). But my favorite way to play is really more how I play a Necro in Eastern Sun. I'm significantly more melee with a few tanks following me around soaking and dealing some damage for me, and I even PN for crowd control. That hits 3 styles IMO. Summon, Caster, and Melee.

Actually I hate the elder scrolls series. I however love the idea of the battlemage.

Me too, in fact in D2 I play a summon necromancer in D2 that uses a bow for a weapon.
It's pretty sweet.

Assassin's like the best example of melee combat augmented by some casting.
