I was thinking about this while taking a shit... You have a Melee class, and a Support-kinda Caster class, now you need a full on Caster, a Ranged DPS, it could be coupled with a melee DPS too, and a Counter-part to the Vodoo guy... That's kinda just some random thoughts... Anyway...
*A very professional type support thing, without summons... a clean cut sorta thing, like the Pally, but not necessarily holy... But, something similar to the Pally, that would balance out the barbaric vodoo stuff... (witch doctor, not the Barb)
Witch Doctor (necro replacement)
Amazon (or obvious zon/asn replacement dealing with ranged and trap-like tactics.)
Paladin (or some type of holy class, the game wouldn't be complete without it.)
can't wait to see what new characters the expansion brings or am I getting ahead of myself? C:
ok my five choices are
Barb: The Pure RAW DAMAGE KILLER up close nd personal i love the new whirlwind amazing class def a single player and partyer
Witch Doctor: seems to be a shman and necro def not a druid because druid is nature it summons animals not undead unholy monsters and insects. a shaman does deal with totems i have to say and i didnt see any but then again we didnt see any other magic attacks than summoning and a swarm of locusts. more party but can go solo cause it can summon
Ninja/amazon/ranger/hunter/Rogue: i say ninja because they can easily incorparate assassin by make it throw not javelins and bows but shuriken (NINJA STARS) and adding all types of diffrent types of elements to the shuriken. This long ranged attacker will most likely be another party killer because while thos eup front attack this can stay back and provide support.
Elementalist/mage: I only chose those two names cause they re gender neutral, sorceror and sorceress are diffrent and they wouldnt make a seperate class for a female or male. Plus whats a blizzard game without a pure magical character. the mages skills would revolve around the three major elements of blizzard, ice fire and lightning. there re also poison spells but that is more a necro and thats why you wont see poison spells for a mage.
Pally/Kinght: w.e you wanna call it. This is my most hated class and i hate to say this but it will prolly be in D3 because it is holy and what way better to fight unholy then with holy . the auras and special attacks that this class can do help out parties, so im guessing if your gunna add this it would be because of the cooperativness of the game not the isngleplayer and indeed blizzard said this was a cooperative game.

Both a physical and magical ranged class will most likely have representation. Also just because no one else said it yet and just because I really don't want to say paladin, since I don't think barbs would be the "shield" user or whatever I am just going to say...creepy purple penguin :cute:.
Many people in this thread and the others like it I have read are getting a bit too hung up on mechanics, so I would like to offer and alternative aproach. I'm going to assume 5 classes at the moment (since that is a certain minimum) if more are added later then thats great, but lets go with what we know.
My ideas relate not to how the classes fit in terms of combat role so much as lore. Everyone seems certain that the witch doctor has replaced the necromancer, and as much as I hate to admit it that seems possible. However, its important to realize the significant role that necromancers play in the lore and storyline of sanctuary. I think it may be prudent to not count them out so quickly. Take the case of the barbarian as an example. They have the obviouse role of pure melee/tank. However, there is no real reason to have brought this character over simply to fill this role when there are plenty of other options. There is good reason, however, to bring them due to their close ties to the story and lore of Mt. Arreat and what happens at the end of D2:LoD with the worldstone. Another important thing to note for those of you considering the class roles is that there isn't really anything about the witch doctor that is so closely related to the necromancer. In fact, his abilities are much more in line with a darker form of the druid than a necromancer. He has a slower, aoe-type casting style, and summons wolf-like minions. The only thing that I can see to indicate necromancer is the wall of zombies, but that doesn't really mean much in terms of role, and it certainly doesn't replace the necromancer's role in the lore. Even if they do leave the necromancer out, it is quite likely he will return in the expansion.
Beyond this issue, a good point was raised about being able to choose male or female for each class and how this doesn't fit with the Amazon. Its possible Blizzard will find some convenient way around this or simply have them be an exception. I feel that it is more likely they will have a more general rogue that borrows a bit from the amazon and assassin. This is based partly in that I'm sure there will be some class of this style, but also because neither of these classes is planted too deeply in the lore or storyline and they would be more easily removed.
It is also pretty certain that some type of pure, direct, mage-type class will be there.
That leaves us with the issue of the paladin. In this case, especially, though also in general the original poster's evaluation of the classes from d2 is based only on their later states after 1.10. This leaves out a lot about what they once were, and I think that can be misleading. The paladin's place in the lore is somewhere around the level of the sorceress imo. They are prominent, but not pivotal. Unlike the sorc,
though, they do not have as sound of a combat role, and are therefore less likely to be a top choice. Though the role of a knight (especially the role of a holy warrior) isn't yet spoken for. This is of special interest due to the emphasis that they are placing on "skills over potions." With this in mind it is reasonable to believe they would have at least one class that has considerable healing abilities (especially when joined with the focus on multi-player co-op).
Now that I have theorized a bit I'll take my shot at the class lineup:
Necromancer ~(if more than 5)~
*at this point who knows maybe another variant of something old or something entirely new :-)
It is important to remember that this is all pure speculation. I'm quite excited about everything no matter what the end result turns out to be.
P.S. as a side note to those talking about this "angle/demon" class: I believe Majpain kinda got it right that playing anything non-human doesn't fit the game. If you don't believe me, I suggest you read the sin war books so you can see that the entire premise of Sanctuary is that humans are to triumph. Wouldn't make much sense, then, if the player triumphed as some angel or demon instead would it?
A pure caster class of some type will obviously join the frey. Magician/Wizard whatever you want to label it as. It's painfully obvious a ranged class is needed and will be added/ Hopefully a Ranger (Archer with animal summon capabilities perhaps?). And who really thinks they will take out paladin? Not I.
I do think Paladin is very suited to Diablo but its more than likely 2 of the 3 remaining classes will be a zapper and a shooter, meaning paladin takes last slot. I'd prefer something else to be honest.
Well the whole "will they leave so-and-so out" is pretty contingent on how many classes they end up having. If they stick with 5 they obviously have to leave something out, and they did say that they don't want to just copy them all over. So unless they do up the number, some of our favorites are getting replaced. Either way, I think we'll all like what we get.
I do think the Necromancer will be ruled out.
Mainly because the Witch doctor uses the following three spells:
Various poison spells
Summoning of Undead minions..........
I suppose his three schools (as if it was Diablo 2) would be like these:
"Concoction" (For Locust Swarm and Fire Bomb)
These three schools are VERY similar to the three necro schools, blood/poison, summoning and curses.
Supposedly the Witch Doctor IS the necromancer replacement.
I believe the paladin will return - or maybe some other holy/medical dude who can heal and be particularly effective against undead or demons. I believe the Zakarum took some heavy blows with 70% of the order corrupted by Mephisto.
I'm really hoping for a demon hunter class (No ---- I am not thinking WC thoughts). With the ferocity the barbarian had combined with the assasin. But this will never happen as such a class would be weird and unbalanced.
I agree that paladin and sorc should make a return. The third class, I'm a little undecided. My idea is either a rogue, like you mentioned, or letting my imagination go wild and having a undead class. Something that is re-animated and is a pure tank. Something to give a barb a run for it's money, lol.;)

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]"I am Legion, for we are many."
Just from a lore point of view, isn't the Necromancer an important class to have in there? Rathma was one, they were trained by Trag'oul. And since Rath and Trag watched over and saved sanctuary (Sin Wars), wouldn't it make sense to put Necro in?

The Vampire Lives Eternally. It Was Promised Eternal Death.
Pretty sure that sorcerer(ess) is a given, and than from there I think it's all custom class love. I'd hate to see all the classes from D2 being brought to D3. It'd be boring IMO. Maybe they're going to say the necros are in hiding, I was reading that guys journal, and it appears to me that there's a lot more anti necro people. I'll have to find the quote where he says one guy blames the necro's for the demons and whatnot.
