Yep.. taken all this time to get RoS expansion but had it since June
Anyway a few things have got me confused now Im playing it as I cant seem to find time to read forums but here goes.
Rift & Greater Rift.. whats the difference and how do I get to the greater?
Patch 2.3 'when" is the ETA or do I have to play PTR to get the 2.3? On that note, once Ive gone to PTR Im guessing my whole account will be patched so I cant play anything else but PTR?
All help with these (to 90% of you here are trivial questions), to me I need to know for my own benefit... thanks heaps for any help
run bounties to get rift keys (normal rifts) -> Kill rift guardians on normal rifts to collect Trial Keys -> Run trials to get a leveled GR Key -> Kill Greater Rift Guardian -> If killed on time you will be able to select between upgrading the key to a higher level or upgrade a legendary gem. If you don't kill the guardian on time you will only be able to upgrade a legendary gem and will need to get another Greater Rift Key to open another GR.
You dont have to play PTR. Patch 2.3 will most likely come on 26 Aug or 2 Sept. You can play both PTR and the normal game, however, any items, xp, gold, whatever you get on the ptr will get deleted and they will NOT be transfered to your normal account.
Rifts: Always same difficulty as you set it (Normal - T6), loot can drop from any monster, Rift guardians drop Greater rift keys.
Greater Rifts - Scales in difficulty (i think around Gr 25 is T6), loot only dropps from the Rift Guardian, legendary gems only drop here as well, you can only upgrade them here. Also used for Ranking system. (loot and xp also scale)
Once you have some nice gear (can do t5-t6) you should start playing greater rifts so you can upgrade your legendary gems and get more loot eventually.
A rift ("Nephalem Rift") is an instantiated zone with randomized mobs and map that lets you farm stuff. A Greater Rift is the same, but follows after that. The progression is as follows:
Bounties (net you "Rift Key Fragment") => Nephalem Rift (net you "Trial Key") => Trial (depending on how many waves you kill, you can enter a Greater Rift with a certain difficulty).
The differences between Nephalem Rifts and Greater Rifts:
* Rifts depend on the game mode difficulty you select (Normal to Torment 6), Greater Rifts are independent of the game mode difficulty and only depend on the level you get from the trial (GR25 is equivalent to a Torment 6 rift, each difficulty step is roughly 3 GR levels difference)
* Greater Rifts drop no loot, have no chests/clickables, no gold (so Harrington Waistguard, Warzechian Armguards, Goldwrap etc are a waste) - all the loot drops at the Rift Guardian.
* Greater Rifts can't spawn goblin packs.
* Greater Rifts will not have open maps (Cemetery, Blood Marsh, Fields of Misery); the best map therefore is the Silver Spire as it's relatively open. Most GR maps however are pretty linear.
* Greater Rifts have only one Pylon of each type, and the Conduit Pylon only lasts 15 seconds.
* Greater Rifts yield VASTLY more experience once you are well-geared (it starts increasing ridiculously after GR30, and scales extremely well with bonus XP gear).
There's no ETA for 2.3 patch. But there will be a 2 week announcements for the end of the season before the patch hits, so it's at least 2-3 weeks away. No, you don't have to play PTR at all.
Hope that helps.
Edit: Wow, that was slow. Well, I was interrupted while posting...

Thanks Rayden.. no, not fast enough as using the game to (even though Ive played since the original Diablo was out) get my eye/hand coordination back, as well as enjoying myself. Especially since being a member here alot of people take time out to help, not like certain people on YouTube.. anyway yes too slow although I kill the RG I never get a choice of selection (not playing PTR)

Im only playing hard (as I know Ill get killed if I try hardcore etc).. Ive seen some in my game chatbox say thier are on tier whatever but I dont know how they get there.. is it to do with how far up you are with paragon points? Sorry if I sound ignorant, guess thats what happens when a person plays solo for too long because never had time to play in clans etc

You are welcome mate!
Diablo Fans community is ok. One troll here and there but overall is just fine. Countless times better than the shithole official forums!
