The ring u`r talking about only drops from Act 1 bounties, so only do those. Best way to gear is to play Rifts, since chance to get Legendaries is increased.

I've got it several times in rifts, so thats bullshit
They are talking about the Ring of Royal Grandeur. It only draps from act 1 bounty caches. You can't get this from any other source (rifts, Kadala).
The new up coming patch will change the way you will want to do bounties. For now Act 1 is usually best. After the patch the bonus bounties will change after it is claimed. So you will follow the bonus bounties to maximize the crafting materials you get.
You may also want a Hellfire Amulet. At this point I would only farm the keys. Don't bother with buying the recipe for Amulet for now. After the patch any keys you have farmed will be upgraded to machine's. Currently it takes 4 keys to make a machine. So waiting for the patch will be significantly more efficient.
Other items you will want is a Broken Crown and the Boon of the Hoarder gem. The crown is a random drop but there is a way to cheat and get it to drop. The broken crown basically doubles the amount of gems by dropping a second gem that matches the color of the gem socketed. The cheat is to create a new character and level him to eleven. The crown doesn't drop until level eleven. The trick lies in the fact that you are guaranteed a legendary item from the first boss you kill. The skeleton king has a very high chance of dropping the crown so you don't want to fight any bosses until 11. When you get to eleven go kill him. It should drop. The only problem is that the crown will be at level eleven so it won't help your stats. So it's best to swap the crown on just before you open a chest or kill a goblin. If you do this with a Gem Hoarder you will get a lot of gems. You will need a lot of them too. 405 Marquis gems are required to fully upgrade the gems on your pants and chest. Boon of the Hoarder drops from the Goblin boss. So you have to kill goblins to get one to eventually open a portal for you. This gem will huge amounts of gold from each monster kill.

I've got the RoRG from rifts, several times, as I said
And every time you would have gotten a different one than the RoRG. It just doesn't drop in rifts.
lol it doesnt matter if hes trolling or not. rorg is not a required item anymore. the vast majority of builds do NOT use it. i say just stick with the t1 strategy. see what drops. if you need rift keys, run some a1 bounties. maybe youll get rorg maybe not. use those keys to run torment rifts. try to get under...say....4 minutes a rift. if you can beat t1 rifts at 2minutes a piece consistently, do t2 until. move up when its too easy. walk gr up for gems as someone else said. dont bother leveling gems until you can do torment 6 pretty easily. its a long long road to go about this solo, so everything i described will probably take you many many many many hours of gameplay.

Required for a build or not is not relevant to the process of gearing up really. Unless you're unlucky it's significantly faster to get rorg + 5 different pieces of a 6p bonus than it is to just find 6 different pieces so you should still be going for it since you need to do bounties anyway.
nah i almost never use it to gear up. realistically the number one goal is to find an ancient weapon of any kind to really help through the lower torments
The best way to gear up on a fresh 70 w/o support from stronger characters (like in the beginning of the season) depends greatly on what class you are playing. If Monk/Barb/Crusader, you can achieve a good amount fairly quickly. The 'quickest way' to get gear quickly is probably the most painful, and requires time. Monk (for example) will yield you the best turnaround. Since you can achieve a build that requires no legendaries that can survive in t6, while it will take you a much longer time to clear a single t6 rift, the idea is to simply kill the RG, and collect the GR keystone. Once you have that, you can clear a GR1, (the equivalent to a normal rift, with t6 values on loot drops) let the timer slip past the 4:30 remaining, and then kill the RG, giving you a GR2 keystone. Repeat this process for as long as you can. You'll get GR9-13 before it becomes difficult w/o legendaries. Also, you'll pick up most, if not all of the legendary gems, which can also help you bump torment levels.
Your only other option is group play or loot sharing.
i mean..im way more offended that you didnt even bother to read what i typed in the first place. my advice was to do a1 bounties ONLY when you need rift keys (opposed to the other acts for higher chance of rorg), but the most important thing to do is to rift and SEE WHAT DROPS. as rorg is not NECESSARY for most builds, its wise to not spend time trying to get it. rorg is a byproduct of getting rift keys from doing a1 bounties; it is no longer a GOAL. its a perk on the side.
its way more important to farm rifts to get items since, in the long haul, he will not use that rorg. if it drops, whoop di do. if it doesnt, keep going at torment rifts until you run out of rift keys.
I recently got a character to max level and i would like to progress towards end game (greater rifts i assume).
I will be playing solo (no multiplayer/boosting) so i gotta know what is the fastest way to start getting meaningful (set) gear.
Currently my char can clear bounties on Torment 2, but so far i have gotten no meaningful set pieces (for crazy bonuses).
I know there is a ring that decreases how many set pieces are needed for a set bonus, so i assume that is a priority to get?
Are there any other such important items to obtain early in the gearing process?
Any other advice or suggestions?

Yes, but it's about 4x more likely in Act 1. So if you need the ring, do that.
