Note: I can't really be considered a Diablo 1/2 fan as I didn't play 1 and I barely played 2 so I am not merely being biased. That said I do have respect for them and the series that this claims to be a part of which is why i find this to be quite off-putting.
So, I noticed with the upcoming patch announcement the Diablo 3 devs seem to yet again feel the need to arbitrarily say that their thing is better than those other guys (previous devs) thing. I am talking about their new kanai cube which for all intents and purposes might as well be called the "better than that old horadric cube ... cube". They could easily have JUST added the horadric cube back in with the features listed, and this is not the first time they have done this (they have in fact been doing it from the start). A simple example that comes to mind is the crusader, the whole its a paladin but a super paladin explanation. For the record I don't hate Diablo 3 (In fact I like it, its not what I would hope for from the series but on its own I think its a fun game), but this just strikes me as arrogant and disrespectful to both the previous devs and fans of the first two games/series overall.
its not "better than that old horadric cube ... cube". If it had similar effect as horadric cube with just little bit more stuff, maybe. Its just using same kind of layout for no specific reason but nostalgic reason, it doesnt extra slot than, the item slot. Honestly i think its waste of effort to make it look similar but oh well. They do completely different things, its not horandric cube.
You're not understanding what I'm saying, that is from their OWN description of the item. They describe the Kanai cube as being the powerful origin of the horadric cube. If they wanted to do something different they could have, but instead they chose to do this, why? If its supposed to be a nostalgic pip for fans then why not just call it the horadric cube even with its different function? If its not supposed to be then why make it a clear reference to it and write the lore of having it be a basically more powerful version of it?
Yep.....I didn't care for that line either. Do they not realize how incredibly smug and shitty that sounded?
This is from the same people who killed Cain. The fuckers killed Cain. THEY FUCKING KILLED CAIN!!!!!
Oh...I got excited, sorry. That still gets me every time.
A few thoughts from me about the Cube;
1) Great idea. We certainly aren't losing anything here, so I'm not sure why some retards are complaining about it @Bnet.
2) People can't complain too much about FINALLY finding that great Legendary item, only to have it roll poorly. Now it's affix can be harvested in perfect form.
3) Build diversity should blow wide open. My mind is racing thinking of potential builds.
4) This helps the BoA situation immeasurably. Our inability to trade just became less negatively impactful on our game experience.
But...it's not the Horadric Cube. The HC was complex, and required some research to get full use out of it. It did so many things, this new cube does 1 simple thing (even a fucking idiot can use it without even looking into it, so it was perfect for a gaming whorehouse like Blizzard).
So that's what the D3 Cube is. A watered down, simple Cube that does nothing even remotely close to what the Horadric Cube did. Actually, I'm not sure why they went with a cube shape at all? Why even go there?
Great idea, but tying it to the Horadric Cube was silly. Describing it as being superior to the Horadric Cube.......arrogant or stupid, maybe both. But, so was killing Cain.
We still dont know what would new Cube do, since devs gived us only a fragment of information, but I'm so happy with their idea to introduce a cube similar to HC in Diablo 2
So that's what the D3 Cube is. A watered down, simple Cube that does nothing even remotely close to what the Horadric Cube did.
Seriously... How the fu** do you even know what D3 cube exactly does? They told us 1 major aspect of this cube and said there will be much more than that...
I understand that. They did tease that it's powers aren't fully known to us yet. So to that end, you're right.
I think the point of the OP is still valid, no matter what the Cube turns out like in it's final iteration. From day 1, we've seen an arrogant desire for Blizzard to shove Diablo 2 out of the minds of the players, and that has been met with a burning refrain from the fans. Declaring the iconic symbol of D2's itemization template, the Horadric Cube, to be inferior to their new advent, the *whatever-the-fuck- D3 Cube........
....... arrogant. Not cool. Don't market this thing to me. Prove it. Show me how it's better. Ya see, when players hear them say the Horadric cube was "surpassed in power by Kanai's Cube".....they don't hear lore, they hear a dev telling us their new cube is better than the old one. True or not, that's provocative and not respectful of just how endeared many of the fans are to the previous two titles.
Point being, they should be a bit more careful and a bit more humble, all things considered.
One of their main guidelins that they talked about even back at the first blizzcon after D3 was announced which was in 08 i think, was the idea that they don't want this to be a D2 with better graphics. Why would they add the horadric cube in D3? It doesn't make sense not in terms of lore and not in terms of gameplay. This cube does totally different things from what we've seen so far and has nothing to do with transmuting items and combining them to create other items or artifacts. I think you guys are just complaining for the sake of complaining.
It's a cool idea in general and instead of adding it in the form of jus ta new window that you can access (like the paragon system), they decided to add it with a bit of gameplay elements attached to it, probably to make it feel more "alive". And what other better archetype of an enchanting artifact could you use in the Diablo universe? The cube concept is awesome and i'm glad they are re-using it.
I'll be perfectly clear. I LOVE this Cube idea. It is exactly what the game needs right now, especially after the odd decision to funnel everything around a 6pc set philosophy. This idea is so good, it actually vindicates their 6pc sets.
Great idea, terribly excited to use it.
But the point of the thread is not to discuss how awesome the Cube is, and what it will bring to the game. My take on the OP is that he's correct. Blizzard has been terribly clumsy with their player PR regarding Diablo 1 & 2. It's as if the very stewards of the franchise have forgotten how beloved the franchise is to the fans.....not players.....FANS.

Good morning, Moose.
Jay Wilson's comments were "We don't want this to be D2.5".
Josh told us at the 2014 Blizzcon that they want to bring more of what we love about d2 into d3.
...and the crowd cheered. A mixed message? Or a paradigm shift?
Color me confused........
they don't want this to be a D2 with better graphics.
Well....they certainly don't have to worry about that. It isn't.

The devs could say anything and there will be people cheering. The player base of D3 since launch was split up of people from so many games that they could literally point the game in any direction and there would be a group of people cheering.
If I were to take a guess, I'd guess more people that picked up D3 at launch came from WoW than players returning from D2.
A lot of players never really cared about D2 but wanted D3 for what they advertised. The original direction of D3 that Jay Wilson tried to create was meant to be a challenge rather than a hack&slash.

Why does this have to be a contreversy? They don't want it to be D2.5 so they won't bring back the horadric cube with its exact same name and powers... But they do want to bring back some stuff that people loved or is reminiscent of D2 therefore a similar cube like artifact that has certain powers that in some ways, are also similar to the old horadric cube in that they provide your character with more customization and power in general.

That's exactly my point, it didn't need to be a controversy. Wilson fucked up, plain and simple. He went to great lengths to dispatch so much of what made D2 sing, and he did it almost flippantly.
His successor, Josh, immediately began looking to D2 to find a sensible path for d3 to follow.
Shurgosa, a long time poster here (haven't seen him here for awhile) posted about this @Bnet. His comments on the Cube were something to the effect of "This is the kind of thing that should've been in the game from day 1".......and he's right.
It wasn't in the game, nor was anything interesting in relation to items, because Jay messed up. He tried to reinvent the wheel and chaos ensued. Now that we're getting back to our roots, things are decidedly much better. This 2.3 patch looks to be amazing, and IMO, a set-up for the next xpac. I expect it to be the last major content patch before the xpac is about to be launched.
Like someone said, this is a Tribute to someone who worked for Blizzard.
I cant believe people are mad at Blizz for not naming a cube what they wanted.
All these new amazing features, yet people are complaining about a name? Come on now guys...
That being said, these Devs are listening to the community and actively looking for what the players want in the game. Diablo 3 (vanilla) was a good finished game and I loved it, it was just different. The devs then were doing what people wanted, we just changed our minds after awhile...
There's no hate for anyone that works at blizzard from other blizzard employees, no where at all did I even get the slightest hint of a "Haha, we fixed your game" in this preview....
I really just cannot even believe the approach people have taken with this. Ok, so its named 'kanai' as a tribute to a diablo 3 artist... what does that have to do with writing it into the lore that it is a better version of the horadric cube? Why not say its the kanai forge, or emporium or litterally any other object... why not even kanais' horadric cube? There is litterally NO other reason to write the lore that way other than to specifically highlight that this cube is better. Further, as I said this is not the first instance of this 1up attitude. Why people here want to make extremely poor excuses for why this is impossible is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, it could be that they didn't mean for it to be that way but it is very much within the realm of possibility and it is poorly framed at the very least.
Hmm, actually I do think the new cube is superior to the old. You could craft with the old cube, level up gems and runes to higher tiers and make potions. Essentially it was the crafting of d2. In D3 the people of sanctuary learned to craft (lol) so the cube is no longer special. But the superior Kunai cube can extract powers, something no human can do. The enchtantrix can modify stats but the powers of items are beyond her skill.
My point is, the old cube did what our trusty crafters do for us in d3. They don't need to even let the new cube do these things because it would be totally pointless.
All great points. You may have a valid argument. We shall see. A +1 from me though.
Part of the reason I'm excited about this new Cube is it's potential for future expansion. There's so much they could do along those lines, and hopefully this same dynamic itemization will continue to be expanded on in the coming xpac (whenever they release it).
Now ...if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go try that tier 41 HC grift and see what happens. Wish me luck. Or not.
The cube is a tribute to Kevin Kanai Griffith, a Diablo artist how passed away last year.
Yea, they sure are being arrogant and disrespectful. /sarcasm
I'll put it this way; If they really want to honor the fella (RIP), they can use this Cube to bring to Diablo 3 itemization what it's always been missing. Truly pliable, dynamic, all-out overpowered badassness.
This is really the first stand-out itemization idea that the d3 devs have dreamed up. Let's hope they don't hold back.
Note: I can't really be considered a Diablo 1/2 fan as I didn't play 1 and I barely played 2 so I am not merely being biased. That said I do have respect for them and the series that this claims to be a part of which is why i find this to be quite off-putting.
