My monk has 40% Critical Chance + 400% Critical Damage + 25% (Damage Against Elite) from soj.
I wanted to increase "Damage Against Elite" since it's all about elite fight this game. What is i put a Diamond into my off hand weapon this will "Increase" against Elite to 45% but "Lower" my critical damage.
So here are the break down:
Option 1. 40% Critical Chance + 400% Critical Damage + 25% (Damage Against Elite)
Option 2. 40% Critical Chance + 285% Critical Damage + 45% (Damage Against Elite)
In a nutshell, dropping the CHD for Dmg vs Elites will slow down your time a bit in between elites. A decent rule of thumb you can look at for time to kill elites though, is this.... How much DPS do I lose swapping to a Dmg vs Elites gem compared to a CHD gem? If you lose MORE than 25% dps, its not worth it at all. If you lose lets say, 22% dps, you most likely wont even notice the difference. It would have to be a very marginal difference.
As far as getting any damage vs elites stats on my gear, I only really care for it on items that give me other benefits as well, ie: your SoJ. I loveeeeee my SoJ and its only level 60 2.0 with 28% vs elites and 18% cold skills.
Long answer: Let us first evaluate how much your relative dps is gonna be vs elites:
option 1: 40% crit, +400% damage, +25% elite damage. Lets calculate how much additional damage you get from your crit and crit damage. This is crit% * critdamage, so 40%*400%= 160% additional damage. Your elite damage is simple that's just 25% additional damage. In total you have (1 + 160%) * (1 + 25%) = 325% damage compared to noncrit nonelite damage
option 2: We do the same calculation. You have 40%*285% = 114% additional damage from crit. Which gives you in total (1 + 114%) * (1 + 45%) = 310.3% damage compared to noncrit nonelite damage
As you can see your damage in option 1 is better versus elites and it goes without saying that it's also better versus nonelites. In short crit damage gems are always better as long as you have even a little crit% from gear.
