Best guess as to the percentage of Diablo 3 purchased through each console?
Obviously the PC version will be more successful out the gate but will the consoles make up ground? Who is Blizzards target audience with the port? Gamers who have played Diablo will go PC, or am I missing something?
Some people just prefer to game on a console. In addition to that, some people don't have a PC that will run the game as well as their console could. Finally, Blizzard is always looking to entice new players to their games. Expanding their reach to other platforms is only natural.
I don't think I would ever play Diablo 3 on a console. I'm not saying I don't think it would work well but I just don't think it would suit my playstyle at all. I only enjoy certain types of games while sitting on my couch. I think your estimates seem pretty realistic though.
I would never play D3 on a console, but I would never play a first-person shooter on a console either, and those are crazy successful console games. Growing up at a time where PC gaming was the pinnacle, I grew very attached to the keyboard/mouse way of playing. With all the time I put into D2 and games like Quake, I can't imagine playing similar games on a console. I'm sure there will be a lot of people who will have no problem with it, though, and modern controllers certainly have enough buttons/config options to make it viable. I'd say the lion's share of sales will still be on PC, though.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
I was shocked to find how well the Oblivion port played on my PS3, but that was more first person.
What I like on this site is that, yes, most of us are PC fans but nobody is trashing the console play. ( Unlike the alternative that I hear all the time on IGN)
@Emry's - I agree with you that you need to open up the ability for more people to play the game, but I disagree that their target audience for a D&D slasher isn't already in tune with the game. The port will cost more money for them without the addition of enough "new" players to justify the ROI.
I hope not, I think it would be a really bad idea. The controls would not be as great on a console as on the computer (which is the primary reason why I usually buy rpg games on a computer instead of a console). And since the console doesn't work together, it would be impossible for a pc user to play with a friend that has diablo on his ps3 for instance which would decrease the number of overall player for each console.
Considering that console won't come out until farther down the road compared to PC, and considering almost everyone hyped for D3 owns a PC, I'm thinking ~85 - 90% will be PC. Maybe if they make a really good version (I'm almost positive it won't be a port, they will have to re make the game pretty much) then sales will be higher, but I'm saying the overwhelming majority will be on PC.
I doubt current generation consoles could handle D3. Even torchlight 2 people said their game would require a major rewrite of code to fit within the limited memory space available.
I may of the minority here but I would actually like to see D3 on my 360. I used to be a PC snob but after getting used to Halo 2 on the Xbox I made the transition to console gaming for FPS.RTS games still require a PC imho but D3 is totally doable on the 360, the controls are fairly simple and just sitting on the couch is a much greater gaming experience to me than sitting at my desk.

The cost of a PC, new or used, thats able to run D3 fine, is no higher than a 360 or ps3.
I have always been againts D3 for console and always will be, the Diablo games are for PC its that simpel.
Yes, that is true, but most people will just play on what they already have if they are given the option. There are plenty of people out there with crappy computers that have a decent game console.
I think console will be a big failure. Can not see how to play Diablo on a pad in Inferno when positioning and targeting will be so important.
And I think Blizzard underestimate the difficulty to enter a "new" market.
I doubt they under estimate it. They have tried this before and failed horribly. I'm sure they know exactly how hard it is to take a game designed for PC and adapt it to a controller and a console. They have only said they are interested in releasing a console version if they can make the game feel like it was designed for that console. If they can't get the game experience that good then they won't do it.

Final Fantasy XI says hello.
Cross console gaming with pcs are entirely doable FFXI did it to great success. You just don't see it often because M$ is a pita for developers wanting to control it all via xbox live. (Square Enix was very vocal about how hard it was for them to get FFXI onto xbox and why they arent even going to bother with FFXIV for it due to Xbox wanting a large cut of the subscriber revenue)
If anything unless Blizzard has some magical relationship with M$ and they can cut through all their policies with xbox live being its own little self contained internet. I won't be surprised if Xbox doesn't get a port. And everyone is aware with PS3 memory issues so until I see them demoing a console version I won't be shocked if their console goals just kinda fade away.
Personally I will get it on console (assuming its a good port) I'll get it for PC of course but nothing beats the comfort of a couch. Console gaming is different of course but I'll use FFXI as a example I started playing it on PC. When I caved in and got it for a console and got used to the controls it was almost painful to go back to a keyboard. A testament to how well PC games that are typically mouse and keyboard can do if the controls are mapped well.

FF was always a console game ported to the PC for FFXI. Plus it's a completely different genre with completely different controls.
If we need a model for good comparison I would look to what Bethesda has done recently, marring the Skyrim PS3 version. They make quality games across all platforms, mostly first person, which makes the controls more fluid in changing styles, but they all have their own quirks.
Knowing that us Diablo fans, or 95% of us, played on the PC, who will be the target audience they are hoping to grasp by producing the console games? Or is it as simple as.... I want to play the same game on my couch?
I guess it would depend on how long it takes to get it out to consoles, the number of PC users will most likely be higher than 65%. I would buy it on PC then console just to see how they compare.

What is this thing called "real life?" Is that some sort of expansion pack?
Best guess as to the percentage of Diablo 3 purchased through each console?
Obviously the PC version will be more successful out the gate but will the consoles make up ground? Who is Blizzards target audience with the port? Gamers who have played Diablo will go PC, or am I missing something?
PC - 65%
XBox - 20%
PS3 - 15%
Blizzard is a very known developer, even for purely console gamers, a game like Diablo 3 would fit perfectly on a console, and blizzard even stated that the game feels even better using a console controller.
There aren't many ARPG's on consoles, and the few that are, aren't very good, i think Diablo 3 could do quite well sales wise.
I doubt MS will let blizzard use RMAH on the 360, so it might be a good choice for gamers that are very against it, Sony are a bit more flexible when it comes to their online service, so you'll never know.

I could see a few million being sold to Console players easily. The gamepad is ideally suited to a game like Diablo 3 so why not? They would be dumb not to port the game over.
However I don't really care as I will be playing it on the PC, but I would like gamepad support in the PC version for those times when I want to lay back on the sofa and play from my HTPC.
I think that all the latest changes are console port related. They want to simplify the game and controls in order to easily adapt it into console environment. I just hope that they know where's the limit so they won't turn this game into crap, but knowing Blizzard I'm a little afraid about the final outcome.
I don't see how the controls nor the mechanics have been simplified in the latest changes to accommodate console players.
All the changes so far have been for the good of the game in my opinion.
Diablo 3 on the consoles wont be a typical port, there will be many changes to the console game, i doubt blizzard have done anything different on the PC version just because they plan on porting it on the consoles eventually.
