I apologize if this topic has already came up.
Back when I used to play D2 I ended up trading a lot of my gear for items that ended up disappearing after I joined another game. I guess they were dupes, not sure cause I never was in on how people did that stuff.
After seeing what had happened I put a hole in the wall beside my computer and immediately uninstalled D2, never to play it again.
Im excited that it is coming out on console. However reading other peoples concerns about the ability to transfer character information via usb card now has me wondering...
What would be the likelihood of D3 (console) becoming as corrupt as I remember D2 being before I quit?
Also would Blizzard, Sony, or Microsoft put in any safeguards to prevent this from happening?,
I know a lot of the PC players are pretty angry about the console version and the apparent fixes they are getting, and l would be too if I had been working a year on my account while waiting for the appropriate patches.
I work overseas with little to no internet connection available, so being able to play my character over here on single player...then returning home to play the same character online sounds kind of nice for me.
I just hope d3 online stays clean.
(excuse my noob terminology, been out of the game for quite some time.)
Thanks... I game will be fun for me..I remember liking the ability to trade with other players, which ended up being my downfall... trading a lot of top level sorc items for top level amazon items, which then disappeared.
I hear people talking about a self found option.... is that just players personal choice within the game..or is there an actual separate part of the game that is for self found players?
Cant really explain how but if others are tanking their characters up on online by cheating..I feel like that would take some of the fun and competition out of online play... cause even though its a team effort (excluding pvp) I still want a fair shot at having a better character than the other guy.
Mainly ive been looking for any blizzard rep posts about this issue, because I know a lot of people have been talking about it.
Nope, there's no "separate self-found mode". It's basically just player's choice not to trade and to judge whether the item a player gets is "legit".
Afaik every item in D3 has a unique ID, so they could potentially delete duped items or (more likely) make them account bound as soon as players go online. Similar to duped items in D3 due to account restoration. If an item dropped offline for a character and is duped offline, then the game has no chance of knowing who the "legit owner" is, so I don't think items will be deleted or players getting banned.
That being said, your concern came up several times - you might find other people playing D3 on consoles with "cheated" characters. When I brought up this concern in a recent discussion I was basically told "STFU", so don't expect anyone to understand your thoughts. I guess the answer will mostly be "it's a non-competitive game, deal with it" (which is true, to be honest).
How is your fun in your own game in any way related to what somebody else who you never meet does in his game for his fun ?
If you want competitive, go play starcraft or counterstrike or some other game that is meant to be competitive. D3 console ( and pc too, so far ) are not competitive games.
edit : nice call bagstone. I hate when that happens
For me it don't matter if people hack on the console version because I'll be playing offline and perhaps split screen with others if I get another xbox controller. So let the people hack and use trainers if they want to won't affect me in the slightest.

I'm surprised that more people don't feel the same way I do. If you can care less about others cheating and corrupting the same game environment you are in, great. I will still have fun with the game as well. I remember how much fun I had with d2 when I was new and either didn't know what kind of hacks and cheats were out there, or there weren't any yet.
All I was basically looking for was any preventions. If none are known I guess we will just see how it goes.
Thanks all for your input.

This argument defiantly has merits, and on the surface you're completely right; Other people cheating *shouldn't* ruin your fun. But that just isn't how it goes. Even though there's no direct competitiveness to D3 such as DPS meters or whatnot, the game is still about finding awesome items, with an undertone of finding an awesome item that's better than the other guys.
Such like the RMAH in D3, where people feel kind of cheated because they had to work very hard for their items (in-game) while others can just buy comparable items. It doesn't actually affect your gameplay (unless in co-op) but it does effect the *feeling* of the game. I for one can look past the RMAH because I rationalize it as 'well that item had to actually be found, and even though someone bought it, that means the person who sold it doesn't have it anymore, so the power is really just trading hands'.
But as far as actually cheating, hacking a toon to Plvl 100 and BiS affix rolls, that's where it does start to affect my gameplay. Maybe I'm different, but I do play to acquire power to be better than the other people playing. Because of this, I completely understand the concern for full on hacking / duping.
As I said previously, you can still have fun playing by yourself or with friends, but if you're like me, it won't be near as much fun.
When I heard the whole "bring your usb to a friends" thing, instantly I thought borderlands. Whether it's shortly after when the game comes out or a few months along, there will be a way to modify items and eventually there may be some sort of extensive program like certain mods for D2 or willow tree from borderlands to manipulate items, skills or various other things for example making a character level 500 or even making "legit" items that would dilute the actual items that have been found.
In the end It will happen and it will be your choice to do it or not and right off the bat I know there will be people copying their character trading off items or gold, then reloading their character duping it, rinse repeat and in an hour you go from 10k to 10b making any sort of D2JSP or trading for gold almost worthless if enough people do it then the second that 1 godly item is found. It will most likely be duped and traded off.
EDIT: In reply to competitiveness, I wish every game had a leaderboards, detailed statistics a ladder or something along those lines. Even a non-competitive game with leaderboards instantly equals more fun for me. Prolonged gameplay and something else to strive for when I'm bored of farming and doesn't add any downside to other players. There will always be cheaters, booster, bots, hackers and scammers. I just wish it wasn't as easy as it is now. I log in and always have several requests from bots advertising websites and if that is being done as often as it is imagine what the people 1 or 2 steps ahead of patches are doing?
