When the game first came out I remember watching items I had for sale get bid up over and over again. Sometimes selling for twice of what i was thinking about selling it for using a buyout. Do people still buy stuff on bid? I have a Ring that i think is probably worth at least 300 mil but it could go for more since rings with similar stats are selling for 700+ mil. So if I put it up with no buyout will people actually bid it up or am I gonna get screwed when someone just snipes it at the last minute for my minimum bid?
People are smarter about bidding now especially since it's impossible for people to figure out what your bid is and raise it up just below your max. I never bid for more than similar items have as their buyouts so I never spend more on a bid than I would by buying outright and afaik most people do this too. If you think it's worth that much then don't settle for any less and force people to buy it outright if the want it. You might have to repost it several times but eventually someone with deep pockets will want it and give you the fair price.
You can't really compare the AH nowadays to the AH of when the game launched. Back when the game first came out it was really hard to find what you wanted (specific things, because of the max affix limit and no way to actually order stuff other than armor).
Nowadays if you have a somewhat useful item (that you think anyone might be interested it) and you set a very low bid amount, and no buyout, I can assure you it will selll.
I'm constantly looking for stuff that has "bid only" as those usually give me at least a 10-20% discount on the buyout price available, and in great deals they can literally cost 10% of what the item is actually worth (considering the buyouts available).
Warning My personal playing/selling style ... don't flame me if you read on :Thumbs Up: . I don't bother even picking up rares anymore as not worth my time. thus I don't vendor anything except the trash I pick up by accident & that I usually toss out while on a run. As for legs, I grab them all. After IDing them I'll do 1 of 4 things depending on the quality & my needs. Salvage for a brim, but my personality is such that I really hate to throw things away ( I don't need anymore at this point) so, I then consider giving to my friends if I don't need for an upgrade (usually the case at this point as a decent upgrade is almost impossible to find). If I think they won't need then I put up on the AH for sale at a starting bid of 45K (this was my asking bid back when brims were around that price & I've stuck to that as a fair trade-off ... if you ever see an item with such a starting bid & no buyout then that's me ). I have no buyout price & I can assure you that I sell almost all items I put up for sale. Currently I have 10 items with 8 of them having bids. The reason for this is simple: the AH is not the game for me. Of course I need gold & when an item gets a nice bid I'm happy, but for me it's just a very small part of D3 & sort of giving back to those who might not have the chance to acquire such an item makes me almost as happy as killing & finding legs. But to answer your question: depends on your approach to selling that will determine whether or not an item will sell (IMHO ).
