I know some classes have buffs that make them higher but lets say there were no passives or buffs that increased all resists. What would be needed for progressing through MP levels? I mean do you still need a lot for say Act 3 on MP 0 or not really anymore? I just remember trying to farm Act 3 on my monk when the game first came out and even with 800-900 resists I got owned in Act 3. Is the same still true or can you get by with a lot less now?
Just trying to figure out how little I can get buy with on my WD using a rain of toads and acid cloud build with 2500 LoH. Will probably only be farming Act 3 with MP0 until I can get better gear.
It's a lot easier (and cheaper) to get to 70-80% resist all, 70-80% damage reduction from armor, and get some LOH/LS and dodge/block than it is to just stack RA and ignore the others.
Don't underestimate DPS either, your RA, Armor, and Vit scores are meaningless if you can't kill quickly. Having a higher DPS will increase your survivability a lot more than any defensive ability when you get to the point where you can take several hits from elites.
Good example to what people are saying, I run my monk around 650 for mp3/4 but but my DH runs with only 350 on the same MP because she is ranged and dose not get hit often (and if I do I'm doing it wrong ;p)

As much as I would love 1,000 unbuffed resists, I've been happy when I was at 450 unbuffed. I'm sitting at 600 unbuffed and am pretty content.
Oh, don't just stack resists. You need armor and vitality to balance it all out.
