I live in a country where access to fast internet comes at a high price. I currently have a 1mbit uncapped connection, which is above average for the home user in South Africa. The game runs well (okay, I have a minimum of 250ms ping on a good day, but that is because my servers are in europe), but often when things get bad, the ping drops to 500 ms, which is MUCH worse. This is probably because of throttleing by my ISP, or the girlfriend uploading stuff onto facebook etc. Also I imagine there are issues with distance to the exchange and whatnot (I'll admit, I have a limited knowledge about how all those 1's and 0's make it to my house). I have recently toyed with the idea of getting a 3g modem (which is like 8mbit) for playing d3.
The question is, how much data would I need per month for playing the game (I can patch using my adsl, and I play 50-100 hours per month, but probably much closer to 50).
And maybe a more important question, how good is this kind of internet for playing D3 (or games in general).
I understand that linespeed isn't the big issue, its the exchange of data at the exchanges, and "how far" the data has to travel to reach the servers. I would think these factors would be improved when using 3g?
Thoughts?

If you lived in the U.S., that type of internet connection would put you under 20ms all the time (not counting server issues). Unfortunately, I think you're kinda hosed strictly from your location and the location of the servers. It sucks that locations like South Africa and Australia always have stupid lag because of server locations.
I don't have or know exact numbers on data usage, but games typically don't load up the bandwidth usage. I'd love to have your connection. My DSL is only 1.5mb down and I rarely see anything under 100ms when I play D3, but am sub-30ms for other games like WoW, etc.
Edit- For some reason, I could have sworn you said that your current connection speed is 8mbit. 1mbit is a bit low when the servers are so far away. I'd try the 3G.

I have 1mbit DLS in the US, and 3G for me allows a more stable connection. My DSL can be 100ms or 1000ms depending on time of day. Check for a return policy if you do try 3G, in case it doesn't provide acceptable results. You might alternately choose a class that is forgiving to a bad ping.
FatManza I live in India, which has the world's worst Internet backbone and routing. I play in my home region, which is US, at 450ms latency. Guess what.... it feels like single-player (except when there are lag spikes or my Internet screws up). I don't think you should actually have trouble playing at 500-600ms ping because I play it fine. And so do most of my friends.

How can you say that an upload speed would granta low ping. I have 50up 10 down and therefore i should have <20? To bad i never get below 100ms while playing this game ever.

Where did I say that? 10 down should be plenty for a low ping, depending where in the world you live.
I'll check with wireshark when I get home from work tonight, but I would imagine Diablo's bandwidth usage is pretty low... Like less than 50KB/s. What's your upload speed; also 1Mb?
Okay, so I've been running wireshark and graphing my bandwidth to the Diablo server. I played about 20 minutes and averaged 6.25KB/s and spiked @ 15KB/s a couple of times very briefly. The graph definitely goes up significantly when I'm fighting monster packs vs standing around in town. Standing in town the bandwidth usage drops almost to zero and you see some heartbeat packets going back and forth, but that's it.

A question (or two) about diablo3's data usage.

Use can use a Bandwidth Monitor such as: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/bandwidthmonitor.html
Play the game for a day or a week, and see how much you use in that time.
