Unlike WoW, where there's tons of different servers, there's only going to be a couple for D3 (as far as I can tell). Does that mean that there's a ridiculously higher chance for the name you want to be taken already?
I think it is a good move. What is really unoriginal is when a name is taken and people still try to take the name by adding or changing letters until it isn't taken.
For example, the name "Shadow" would become "xXShadoXx" or "Shadow381". It really just spoils the character.

That will never happen anymore, so now when someone sees my creative name they can just make a character with the exact same name.... /sigh
As soon as someone sees that I made a male witch doctor named ObamaCare.... there will be 1000's of copy-cats....
Well me and my brother since we were big in the PvP had recognized name value, and were often victims of hacks such as name botting, ect. So it was very hard to remake a character without getting the name stolen. In fact my brother got the name Death, went to remake as correct character and lost it in a millisecond to a name botter ha.
I also don't want the game to end up like Guild Wars where all of the good names or the names I want that not a lot of people use are taken and im stuck with a crappy name. So I like this system better.

I kinda like the opposite of your last comment. I want noobs who start late to not get the good names, whereas people like me & (I'm sure) you guys get the good names for starting on launch night!
Names you type are not unique. Every name has a 4-digit number combination that goes with the name to identify it. Same for battletags.
I hope they give lowest-number 4-digit combos, sorta like serial numbers, so someone can tell who is the ORIGINAL person with that name.
The numbers, from what we know about them, are very random. They don't represent anything. Also the point isn't that there will be an "original" guy with that name, but that there will likely be 10 000 people that would like to name their Barbs "Conan". And not one of them is original. But at least they can all be Conan.

That's understandable, as far as the Conan reference, but as for clever and funny original names.... not so much. The person who comes up with the awesome name never gets true credit for it. A total shame

That is why PvP is great, your skill will set you apart from others so you can be the original haha.

- What makes you believe you're the original anything? You got a generic name "ghost" and a picture you probably didn't draw yourself but rather stole from some source on the Internet.

No.
You have a Batlletag (or Battlenet name) that is created with your bnet account. For example, you put GhostLoad as your battletag. The system will add 4digits to it created randomly (and not already taken) for example 6345.
Therefore your battletag is GhostLoad#6345
Now when you go into Diablo 3 and create a character you can name it however you want, there is no number attached to it. The number is attached to your Battletag which is unique and common to everything on your bnet account.
When you go ingame, people will appear with their Battletag. The name of their character appear only in chat I think.
Conclusion: Names won't be taken but on the other hand it's your battletag that matter the most.
They're changing it so that your character name shows up in game instead of your Battletag. It used to be this way in the beta, then they changed it to Battletag not too many patches ago. People didn't like that, so they said they would change it back to character name to encourage immersion of your character.

Hmm that's kinda the opposite direction of what I was thinking. That still kinda sucks.... Bye bye originality

/sarcasm.... only slightly
