Never got to play it, D2 was already out by the time I got into pc gaming and D2 itself was such an incredible game that I never thought about playing the first one, even though the lore was the main thing that captivated me. 2 days ago I randomly found out about the hd mod and thought wth, let's give it a whirl, how bad can it be. I was expecting a less than stellar experience, bad/outdated mechanics and a bland gameplay honestly. I though I'd soldier on and get it start to finish just for the lore (I already knew all of it, just wanted to experience it myself).
I was sold within the first 10 minutes. This game is pure. fucking. awesomness. The feeling is vastly superior to D2, no wonder they reused part of the soundtrack, it's absolute genius. Usually I can't play a game for more than 2 hours straight, unless we're talking Civ V. I played for like 10 hours straight. Did not get bored for one second. Did not look up any tactics, builds. Nothing. And it felt awesome. The HD mod does fix a series of bad mechanics from what I've seen and you'll never realize that it's not an official patch. Seriously, anyone who wasn't tried D1 before should do so asap. It's abandonware afaik, so no worries about pirating it.

To me, this is sacrilege. Diablo 1 is perfectly fine as it is. No need to slap on a bunch of stuff to make it look like a bullet hell shooter.
Yea the Diablo 1 HD mod is absolutely amazing, makes so many awesome improvements to the original. I'd recommend it to anyone who loved the original game.

Have you at least tried it? I did many months back when DiabloFans had it on its front page, and it made things that the original lacked and did it without being too cheesy. Just think of it as an unofficial expansion like Hellfire

Aw crap. I tried it and it's quite good, so that's gonna cost me some time.
The resolution gave me head-ache at first (everything is so freakin' tiny!) and kind of kills the atmosphere. And I can't quite get the hang of the necromancer, but they did a nice job. I'm curious to see how things will go on the deeper levels.
Do you have to have normal Diablo 1 or does this MOD require Hellfire as well? I only have D1, not sure tho if that cd even works anymore.
Nope, just needs the Diablo 1 disc, and I believe you can (maybe you have to? Don't remember) rip some files off the CD and not even need it to play the mod. I personally made a copy of the Diablo folder in the Program Files and renamed it to Diablo HD Mod.

Ahh yeah, I can see how it could give one a headache. It's never happened to me, but all that eye strain...ouch.
You can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel. Which, by the way, is an AWESOME addition to the game compared to Diablo 1 where you could only have 2 different zoom distances: a VERY close one and the regular and playable one.
this is the same as that d2 mod. and all they do is pump some nerd's fantasies by enabling characters to launch a thousand projectiles to combat foes which launch another thousand projectiles. it has nothing to do with the creepy dungeon crawling we used to play back in '96.
it just doesn't have any appeal and just lacks creativity. pass after seeing the trailer.
This is how a revival is meant to be, It fixes so many issues with the original game but it also Adds to it in a way it feels as if it was already part of the game. I have been useing the HD mod since it was still in its early testing game. This is what diablo should feel like, If any of you have played diablo since the start, You have followed the development of diablo from what it was then to what it is now. This is what diablo should feel like NOT a mobile game and not what diablo 3 was.

//sorry for being rather offtopic, but I figured that if I post this in the legacy forums, many people will just never get to see it.
I'm quite impressed by this mod, its been a while since I picked up D1 and this makes me want to play it all over again.
"Abandonware" means you can pirate it? That's news to me.
Not unless you can show us an official blizzard statement which says that you are allowed to.

Ok then, you can be the one to buy it if you want.
I'm telling ya, go ahead and give it a try. You'll love it.
So how long until diablo 3 has some modable features :(?
Call me a purist, but they lost me at:

Wow, this Mod is not bad at all. They did a good job on it!
