Since they made the fantastic choice to no longer force players to "click" on gold in order to acquire it, but rather walk over it, I'm wondering why they don't just find a way to place dropped gold right into your inventory?
I ask because while watching a few d3 game play videos, I'm seeing players run right by little 5 gold stacks, simply because it isn't worth walking back to pick them up. It would be convenient to just automatically acquire all dropped gold.
I think it's the concept of picking it up, for instance if you did this with items you wouldn't get the satisfaction of seeing your spoils come from the mob, it would just get mixed in with the rest.
The reason that they made gold an instant pick up is so that you no longer have to click a million times over a pile of scattered gold. Having the gold go directly into your inventory is kinda lazy.
I think people are just being lazy in the beta because there's not much to do with the gold. I imagine people will be much more willing to run around and pick it up after launch.
Even when the idea came around for auto pickup gold, I thought I would lose the satisfaction of picking up gold.
Alas, I did not, its still fun and a lot less annoying to boot.
But going straight to your inventory is akin to not noticing it. Some games to it, like Mass Effect. You just "get credits". So you never feel the satisfaction of picking it up. Even if its just a small thing.
I'm sorry but some of these replies have a tinge of defensiveness.
There are plenty of easy, quick ways to animate the gold going into your inventory to maintain a sense of accomplishment. But rather then that, they could simply double the size of the gold-pickup-radius to accomplish the exact same thing.
Did someone actually just draw the line in the sand here, and state that anything before this line is convenience, but anything after this line is laziness? This is quality stuff, please continue.
There needs to be a balance between removing annoying time consuming features and just being plain lazy.
I think that auto picking up gold is a good simple feature, especially since gold will be more valued in the game now. It's not an over the top feature, it's not too lazy, but it will save a little bit of trouble.
If you had a lazy feature like adding it straight to your inventory, then where do you stop? Why not auto attack any hostile within 3 yards? Auto equip any item you find that's better and sell anything else in your inventory? I know I'm on the fine line of being a picky asshole, but there needs to a time to stop so that players have to do at least something other than hack and slash, however trivial it is.
Those are some great suggestions. I'm sure having little "tick" options for them in the game menu could only benefit diablo players.
On a related note, I know that adding a lazy feature like power steering to cars is desirable, but then where do you stop? Why flip your blinkers manually when your car can do it for you as you turn? Why shift gears manually when your transmission can do it for you? There needs to a time to stop so that drivers have to do at least something other than look and turn.
This post has made it obvious to me that there exists a thriving community of people here that seem to have mistaken convenience for something negative. I won't speculate as to the reasons behind this mentality, but I will say that it is some of the most counter productive thinking I've ever encountered.
Not to mention the fact that you can't argue against it. How do I offer a counterpoint to someone's opinion that "THIS IS JUST LAZY NAO GAIS COME ON DONT BE LAZY"
Power steering - great for older, weaker people. Manual blinkers - could be confusing to detect when you're turning instead of navigating a sharp corner, plus how would they operate easily and effectively at different speeds (eg. freeway vs pulling away from the kerb). Manual gears allow better control for dealing with hills or accelerating quickly.
It's good to at least know that the weaker among the human race (your words kid, not mine), as well as NASCAR have viable driving alternatives provided to them by the automobile industry. That's why automatic transmissions are illegal in racing events, and power steering is only legal with a doctor's note, right? Because if it is a convenience, then by your logic people should not have the option of using it.
What is less inspiring to know is that you would rather continue defending your weak position rather than support the improvement of the game who's forum you're posting on. Then again maybe we should take a note out of your book and get rid of those lazy tractors. After all, they're only for the weaker, older people who can't shovel properly.
Bad for immersion or feel of the game? That's for the individual player to decide. Hence the need for some kind of UI option in the game, should their dev team have the resources to spare its developement.
I think it's time you find another hill to defend; One that is actually being attacked.
I'm all for eliminating annoying but there has to be some aspect of playing the game - I'm sure with a bit of programming they could simulate the entire "life" of your character without showing a single graphic:
"You played your Wiz to level 60 in 45 hours 23 minutes and 12 seconds. During this time you accumulated 1.45 billion gold while slaying 278,234 monsters. You equipment at level 10 was... blah blah blah.
What you gain SHOULD be based on decisions - do I go open that regular chest or head off into the next room. Having everything "auto" complete would make for a very hollow game.

Well, I think everyone has a different point where they draw that line. Personally, I do not know that it really matters that much on this gold issue - if they took out gold and instead had a number pop out of the monster when it died indicating how much gold you've gained (like how the numbers pop out indicating damage), that would functionally be fine and yes, more efficient. The thing is, I don't think it's all about efficiency and convenience in this particular case.
One thing that I do like about gold falling on the ground is that it definitely feels like I'm getting more stuff, even if I'm not really. Without gold dropping, most of the time there will not be anything on the ground except for health globes, which isn't very exciting. The system that they have now seems like a happy medium between having to click on gold and putting it straight into your inventory, and the scroll of companion is a fun idea as well that goes along with it. I think that a lot of people would probably agree that having the floor littered with goods is part of what makes a Diablo game feel like a Diablo game, and also part of what makes it fun.
Actually, from what I've seen so far in Diablo 3, Blizzard has done a really good job of finding a middle ground between getting rid of some of the features that were just kind of annoying/time consuming in other games (e.g., potions, town portals), but keeping them to a point that it still feels like Diablo.
For what it's worth, there is a potential item modifier that increases your gold and health globe pick up radius.
Honestly, I think it has to do with the game feeling. It really does feel different to walk over gold than it does to just have it plop into your inventory. Diablo is very much about the enjoyment of seeing items drop. Automating any part of that process, even for something as small as gold hurts the game environment.
It absolutely would be convenient. But convenience isn't always a good thing. They've already added a ton of convenience features to the game as it is, all designed to keep you in the field of battle. But the sound of gold landing on the ground followed by the satisfying sound of picking it up as you walk over it is like a little hit of the Diablo drug. Taking that out would impact the game more than you might think it would.
I'm absolutely certain the Blizzard tried automatic gold. But as soon as it becomes automatic, it becomes something you no longer think about or really care about. I really think players do want to see the gold and pick it up. Action leading to satisfaction is the name of the game here.
First of all there is stats on gear that increase the gold-pick up radius aswell as health globe radius.
Second there is an item called Scroll of Companion which does exactly what you are suggestion, auto pickup on gold. Done by your little Companion in question. So just use those whenever you don't have an active Companion. In this I mean Companion as in small critters and not the Paladin guy who fights with you.

Unless we can make them, I doubt you can pick enough up to last forever.
Could prob buy them on AH though.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
If you're truly worried about this then roll a demon hunter with the Companion ability and socket an alabaster rune which turns the companion from a raven into a ferret that collects gold for you.

holy crap, I didnt know about that.
That is cool.
WTF, it gives you 40% more gold too lol.

btw, I'd only be ok with the ferret idea if it/he/she were named Kodo or Podo.
Edit
deal with it
