- Resource System (Everyone uses mana -> Everyone has their own resource system)
- Trading System (In a way Item for Item -> Item for gold, Item for cash)
- Stat / skill point system (No more points for you! I am already a huge fan of this change!)
- Respecing / New Characters (Respecing is out of the window, making more of 1 class seems to be pointless)
- Rushing (Powerleveling is now limited, however you can skip the storyline.. How would this benefit anyone other then bringing a lowbie to higher level content which he won't be able to beat?)
- Potions (Potion spam to Health Globe 'spam', you rely on these globes to drop, and I think you will pick them up as much as anyone would use potions in D2)
- Mercenaries (Renamed to followers, and are single player only)
- Charms (If im correct, they're removed for now)
- Town Portals (More of a balancing and ... change to Stone of Recal)
- PvP (Open PvP + Hostile -> Fixed matches in a closed enviorment)
- Gold (Now balanced and worth picking up!)
And probably a lot more has changed! I am sure almost everything is for the better, otherwise they would'nt have changed it.
Even though all these typical Diablo 2 style systems get changed, I still feel like Diablo 3 is a Diablo game. Diablo 2 stands out in a lot of ways from the other Hack & Slash RPG's, and is in my opinion still unrivaled.
So why does Diablo 3 fit into the Diablo franchise even though almost everything that was typical 'Diablo' got changed? Or; Why do you like the Diablo franchise so much more than other franchises?

The lore is interesting indeed for D3. For the first two games people were largely ignorant or in denial of the Prime Evils and what was really happening in the world. I'm interested to see how people are acting in this game now that it seems people can no longer ignore the reality of the situation.

Very insightful. Most people I've played D2 with in general, had no clue what it was all really about. They just knew there were some angels and big demon bosses they had to kill.

Oddly enough, no matter how dire the situation or how near the merchants are to the action, they always seem to stay put and remain open for business...
Are you talking about other players? Cause I was referring to the NPCs mostly. Even in D2 people seem largely unaware of how hell is about to invade their planet.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
Oddly enough, no matter how dire the situation or how near the merchants are to the action, they always seem to stay put and remain open for business...
Like I said I think many are in denial about what's really happening. Or maybe they feel inside a town such as Lut Gholein is the safest place to be held up. And you might as well do business while you're there.
Noone re asked this question is In game trading still in for the current build, at blizzcon 10 it was and he said explicitly that they would still want people to trade their items in a game with one another for the player interaction, but there will be an outside trading option as well. That is great for us because now i pick up a soj and you pick up jalals i don't have to make you go to the AH to sell me it, i can just do item for item trade in a game.
OP: What makes this still a Diablo Game, Everything, the feel so far to me looks Amazing, the jungle act looks phenomenal to me, I love the music we've heard so far and I think the revolutionary ideas are still present in D3. The lore though is where it hits the spot, It follows Diablos lore and style in every way and I couldn't be happier.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
For me there are a couple of things that makes this game DIABLO!
Random gear
the music
Unrivaled multiplayed co-op
I recently played an HnS RPG game which scored an ok'sh 7 on gamespot.com. It absolutely felt horrible. I couldn't play it for more then 30 minutes. I kept thinking, wauw this game is really shit even compared to D2, let alone D3!
Im talking about Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. The game looked great from trailers and all. But while played i really missed the perfectly themed music and a superb co-op mode! The randomness of the gear i didn't even get to see, i just de-installed it after 30 minutes worth of playing.
-feel free to add more comments on what makes D3 so likeable as the sequal in the Diablo franchise!

The most memorable thing about any Diablo game for me is the rich ambiance and storyline. Yeah, all the gear stuff is great and finding loot, I get that. And that is what will keep me into the game years later after I've seen the cinematics and cutscenes over and over again. But had I not originally been so moved by the story and settings of the game, I still would not have played it for so many years later based on the other reasons concerning gear and loot.
it has very little in common with what the original creators of Diablo had in mind.
Yeahhhh but that was like 15 years ago since the first one came out. By some developer standards the game could have evolved way beyond the first ones. This many years later I think we're lucky with many of the original key elements from the game that are still intact.
The thing is, we've waited so long for D3 that no one's expectations are likely to be totally fulfilled. Maybe they will. I hope that's the case. But you don't wait over ten years for a sequel without developing unrealistically high expectations. The longer they took on this game, the more the fans came to expect out of it. I mean, they say Duke Nukem Forever was a shitty ass game (I never played it). But even if it managed to be awesome, could it really have been up to anyone's expectations after so long a time and after to much heresay and conjecture about the game? It's like the myth of a game can take on a life of its own.
Diablo 3 is likely to suffer from a lot of unfair criticism once finally released. That doesn't mean that you can't fairly criticize the game though either. And I think Blizzard has been paying attention most of the time to how fans are responding to the development of the game.
Diablo 1 is like a big part of my teenage years. I'm not sure I can ever have quite the experience I did with a game that I did since I was that age. I hope my own cynicism and nostalgia doesn't keep me from ever enjoying it. But I also embrace things that are new as well. I don't know....
Well, yes. Those 15 years would and should bring new and more interesting ways to play the game. However, there should still be some gameplay ties. Throwing the barbarian and calling it "Diablo" doesn't in my opinion make a strong enough tie to the series. And honestly, I don't blame Blizzard. This is the first Diablo game Blizzard made, so they are not going to do it as good as Blizzard North/Condor/Runic did. However, they do need to understand that older gamers like you and I do have attachments to Diablo 1 and 2 and do not want to loose everything that was Diablo 1 and 2. I mean, Diablo 2 was a strong, strong departure from Diablo 1. A skill tree, runes, running instead of just walking, etc, these are all things that are hard departures from Diablo 1, but Blizzard North made sure that they still kept a strong tie-in with Diablo 1 through the story and the gameplay as well as the items. They even managed to take some things from Diablo 1 and make them better in Diablo 2 but still have the core Diablo 1 idea, like the trade windows. I don't feel like I am looking at a Diablo game when I look at Diablo 3 gameplay trailers and videos. I simply don't. It may be me, but that's how I feel.
But you are right. After 15 years, most gamers are going to get exceptionally high expectations, and their expectations are going to be too high for Activision-Blizzard to handle.
So I summed up what got changed since Diablo 2, which is nearly everything the original game consisted of.
- Crafting System (Runewords -> Artisians)
- Runes (Material for crafting -> Skill changing mechanic)
- Hotbars (2 switchable skill slots -> 6 slot actionbar)
- Resource System (Everyone uses mana -> Everyone has their own resource system)
- Trading System (In a way Item for Item -> Item for gold, Item for cash)
- Stat / skill point system (No more points for you! I am already a huge fan of this change!)
- Respecing / New Characters (Respecing is out of the window, making more of 1 class seems to be pointless)
- Rushing (Powerleveling is now limited, however you can skip the storyline.. How would this benefit anyone other then bringing a lowbie to higher level content which he won't be able to beat?)

Oh, wait...
The Co-op is definitly what makes D3 'diablo'. I have yet to see a game that has done this part so well as diablo 2.
So just the story? We have no idea what the story is though
But is a co-op and the story enough? Or do we need more Diablo flavour as seen in the past?

Well, the Lore should be there. I think the Lore is going to be the saving grace that will connect Diablo 3 to Diablo 2.
Not saying it's a bad game, it looks fun, but it has very little in common with what the original creators of Diablo had in mind.
