We already knew the barb, wizard, wd, and dh could all use shields. The only real news from this is the monk. I always assumed he had a trait for a weapon block anyway like the assassin. If you want to sacrifice dmg for defense like any other class, go for it. The only time I'll be using one is on hardcore.

the concern about monks using shields is the look right? its easy to make it look legit. Itll be like the assassin using a shield and a fist weapon; not my cup of tea personally, but its not painful like the rainbow armor that both d2 and classic Diablo had. If the problem is the lore, the idea that monks are also female in the d3 universe shows us that monks are different, and are materially oriented (wouldn't work very well if d3, the game about gear, had a character with lore that opposed it).
I think that Doom's posts are very insightful and almost every question I've asked on the forum's he's answered...even if I've only been here for a couple weeks. Not sure where all this is coming from.....
I don't know why people rage so much about these things. If, say, you don't like the fact monks can use a shield due to lore or whatever reason, don't use a shield. Its pretty much that simple. I doubt the best stuff for that class to use will be a shield anyway when you get to more end game gear. It just might help at a certain point along the way.
It reminds me of the Shield Dancer Magic: the Gathering card
As to lore, if you think of the Monk as a master of martial arts (not just an open handed fighter) Then he would technically be a master of all armaments. Actually using the weapon (and shield) to its full capability. This can even include bows (although I think there are no martial arts that use crossbows because they are for the untrained masses, but for that I could be wrong).
And Doom, I bet its because you got rid of Pascal. He was awesome.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
last I heard there were no armor restrictions either so to answer your question YES, you will see monks with plate armor XD deal with it.
unless I am mistaken ?
I don't see how this is big news, or surprising anyone. All the classes in both Diablo and Diablo 2 could use shields. The only type of shield restriction is in Diablo 2 where there was a set of paladin only shields.
Now I'm just wondering if this will help me make a Tanking Battle Mage.
Ya i think for Wizards / WD its going to come down to using a 1 handed weapon, orb or what have you, with a little defense, or a two handed weapon, ie magic staff that will give you greater spell % damage increase, unless you can duel wield orbs ? =/ I dont see why not, because I was under the impression that you can use an orb( whatever 1 handed staff for Wiz is called) and a sword Gandalf style.
I think the main thing they should look into is making shields in a way so they aren't automatically forced onto people because of your inability to compete without them. Whether that is by making the shield block percentage max at like fifty percent or something else I'm not sure of.
I don't think ill ever use a shield. I dont like em.
