We all know that in games such as Everquest and WoW, the game content is rich, very extensive, and pretty much never ending. All that comes with a $15 a month service fee. I know the servers have to be paid for, but with all the people in the world that play these two game giants, I'm sure those servers are paid for and then some at $15 a head. I mean thousands apon thousands pay to play. So the rest of the money just goes to the other expenses like enriching the game content right?
Well I guess my question to Blizzard is... how far is Blizzard able/willing to take Diablo3 game content for us Diablofans while keeping the game free. Are we able to see game content as lengthy as wow and eq off strait up software sales?
If no monthly fee means no new content after release, then so be it. There's no way I'm gonna pay a monthly fee to play any game.
That being said, look at all the things they still did relatively recently (i'm even talking about 1.10 there) for an ancient game like D2. I don't think we'll have to worry about that. Besides there are always expansions to add content, maybe we'll also get a multiple expansion approach with D3. I'd much rather buy 5 expansions and play them whenever I have time, than pay every month and feel forced to play regularly because I'm spending money to do so...
I really don't see there being a monthly fee because as we all know Diablo is more about the loot than anything else. There really isn't much in the ways of 'endless endgame content' that pay to play MMOs have so there is no need for a pay to play system.
That being said, I wish they would make the game pay to play and that they would hold weekly events and new end game content that comes along with the fee, but that is simply not Diablo.
Diablo 3 WONT have free content, nothing is free and Blizzard knows better than anyone else on how to squeeze money from its gamers. So you better save up money for all the expansions/DLC's they have planned for this.
Oh yeah... monthly fee for a Diablo game is just stupid.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
it will have end-game events but not that many content patches, just like it was in Diablo II. i mean... 13 patches in 10 years isnt what you call much either. i hope we'll get more than one expansion to cover the loss of content patches.
You guys didn't understand my post. I'm not asking for a monthly fee. A monthly fee sux no matter what game I'm playing. I'm simply wondering how far Blizzard is able/willing to take the game content quests/world maps/end game stuff ... while keeping thing like battlenet free to play. Where do they draw the line and say "ok guys, we've done so much now you're going to pay a montly fee to pay for our time".
The OP is not asking whether or not D3 should be pay to play or free. He is saying that since it is free to play (confirmed) then how much extra content, patches, maintenance can we expect without the continual revenue.
I think we will get some minor patches at the beginning but most content will be added through expansions. We should be getting at least two expansions from clues they have said.

as i said. with the game not being pay2play the content patches will be few to none.
the one good chance for new content will be expansions.
At first i wanted fees, wich greatly improves the chances of better services and new content.
However, after give some though, i changed my mind. I think expansions alone is good enough to maintain a good quantity of content. Also a mouthyl fees is a really limitation to the player that wants to play the game sporadically (every time will wish to go back to the game you have to get you card and unfreeze the account, wich is terrible). And diablo is just the kind of game people plays sporadically.
So, fater all, i'm in the freen D3 team, as long the game has at least 2 expansions (and expansions adds at least 3~4 hours of content, unlike LoD that added 40 minutes...).
I would give LOD more than 40 minutes. Anyway Blizz will definitely put out a slew of new content, but I don't think we should be afraid that D3 won't be immortal. Focus on the "now".
Monthly fees will be the death of diablo for me. I can't play a hack'n slash to it's fullest knowing that I'm paying for each and every second of it. Being busy with labs and such, I can't force myself to play the game even if I don't have the time for it. For me, pay 2 play is a no no and if ever the f*gs at Activision wanna implement it, I think I'll become a barbarian and beat the living sh*t out of them. I'll call it Diablo 3 live edition.
Anyways, I believe that they will still be able to patch up the game, we see StarCraft 2 and the introduction of Battle.Net 2.0, Blizzard wants to recreate e-sports, and since Diablo 3 is most likely to be integrated in the e-sport system we are likely to see further patching into the game that previous titles, but not to the extent of an MMO.
If not the increased patch cycle, then probably an expansion or two to continue the game, hopefully.

I couldn't agree more they basicly own e-sports with star craft/wow why not make a killing blow and add another awsome title to e-sports gg...(plus I'm hoping this because a few of my friends are only gonna get it /play it for end game and pvp competive or something close to it so I'm crossing my fingers :))

edit: your comparing d3 to MMORPG's. d3 IS NOT AN MMORPG

the only thing mmorpg is relivant to is the number of people playing on a server at any given time. Thats not even close to what im talking about.
I live in Argentina, the prices is x4 higher for me. Imagine you had to pay 60$ instead of 15$ per month, will you do it?
