*Taking a deep breath* Might be a tedious read, so bear with it coz it might (possibly:P) lead to interesting discussion.
We have elements(ice, fire, poison, lightning) in D2 forming part of the obvious non-classical elements.
The classical elements themselves vary according to different philosophies(most going with air, fire, wind and earth while others like Chinese philosophy bringing in Wood and Metal as elements).
Since blizzard seems to be making(more direct) use of the non-classical elements, that's what we'll focus on. Here's a list of the most popular ones- Ice- Sorc used it predominantly and wizard will probably use it as well. Lightning- Javazons and lightning sorcs were among the most efficient mass monster murderers. Wizard uses it too. Poison- Poison nova...enough said. In D3 WD might have some poison related stuff. Fire- druid, sorc mainly. WD uses the fire blast thing
LESS OBVIOUS non-classical elements Darkness- I associate it with summons, mainly that of necro. WD uses it..what with wall of zombies and all. Plants- Druid used that a bit with creepers and all. In D3, hasn't seen it yet.
In D3, Blizzard has just added the holy element, creating great interest around the monk(apart from the fact that he's seems like a SF character and ready to throw a hadoken)
The idea here is that the non-classical elements are used as the basis for character skills and specific abilities.
I'll list a couple(interesting ones) more (there are a lot since they are based on fiction) that has never been used yet-
Crystal
Sonic or soundwaves
Bear in mind that the elements does not necessarily mean beams or bolts u fire from ur hand. It can be in the form of darkness or plants like necro and druid uses.
So do you think that the last class might invlove a new(non-classical)element?
PS- Among non-classical element there is also 'love'. Maybe if diablo needs a hug and some comforting coz there's a bigger baddie around...:P
PPS- Oops I almost forgot magic!! I associate it with holy for D3. Bone necro used it along with hammerdins in D2 But there can also be dark magic...I guess that will be arcane skills from the wizard.:)
well really the plants and most other things non ss druids used where earth.
but it looks like they have added a time element already to the wizard, and if you want to count pestilence or disease as a element looks like they put that into the witch doctor
as far as the 5th character idk.
sound would be like sindeel screaming from mortal kombat so that might be cool . they also had wind in d2 so idk if they will play that in somewhere.
but we have yet to see water. or some kind of gravity element. they somewhat had holy but not to a high extent (they should make a priest!!)
of course we have metal already thats swords and s***.
they could go the harry potter route and make love the strongest weapon.
Thanks mate.
Btw I thought of Sindel when writing about sonic waves:D... There was also that guy from sound village in Naruto too. We could get a few ideas from ninjas of the sound village:P
Those are not the D2 elements. They are: Fire: Used by almost all classes, it's the most straightrhough damage type. Cold: Used by sorc and druids mostly, cold is weaker compered to fire, but slowdown enemies. Lightning: The volatile element, lightning had insanely high damage, but a too wide damage intervail. Poison: Poison is the most damaging element, but takes time to acomplish it's effect. Magic: The element that cannot be resisted by players and most monsters. Used by necromancer and paladin.
Also some people consider paladin Holy Bolt/Fist of the Heavens as a extra element for it's wierd propeities, but the game consider those magic.
Summons and stuff are physical because they do this kind of damage and they are not any kind of energy or substancy, they are 100% material.
At the moment D3 elements are the same, except magic are now called arcane, wich is a terrible name because it only fits the wizard class, so it's too limited. For exemple, it feels very weird to have a WD using arcane spells (and he have a couple at the moment!). I believe change arcane to a more generic name would be good (something like mystic or spirit).
People also speculate about a new element Holy used by the monk.
To italofoca- dude, no offense but u basically reiterated everything I said in the original post. U just used cold instead of ice...;)
Anyway to get the discussion back on track, I came to the conclusion that blizzard used fictional(non-classical) elements because they've used poison and lightning in D2 which do not form part of classical elements. Even cold is arguable... The list of classical elements according to different philosophies(Hindu, Greek Chinese, Tibetan...etc) - Air, Fire, Earth, Water, Wood(Chinese), Metal(Chinese).
However fictional elements used in fantasy are much broader-
they invlove- light(holy), darkness, lightning, poison, ice, plants, soundwaves, crystal, space...and lots more(just use ur imagination:P)
I believed the element of darkness(used thru undead summons) is already present and light(thru holy powers from monk)
Like I said before elements must not be taken as shooting bolts or beams but as a POWER behind the character skills.
So let me rephrase my question to avoid confusion- What power(new preferably and being among the fictional elements) could be used to make an original 5th class.:)
Conventionnal elements is : air, water, earth and fire
if I sort logical all idea in this thread :
nature, plants, wood, metal = earth
ice = water
wind = air
I don't think poison fit as an element... but if yes I put it in earth.
magic, light, holy, chaos, dark, shadow is unclassable in natural conventionnal elements.
chaos, dark, shadow, are the same... evil nature.
light and holy are the same... good nature
magic is whole of all this.
logically !
I think arcane from d3 it's an other word to say pure magic !
What is definite as elements in d3 ? fire, ice / lightning (storm ? 1 resist for 2 kind of damage ?) poison and arcane .
*Big yawn*....Guys I just won't bother explaining myself for a third time.:)
Classical and fictional elements...well....*yawn*....nvm.. I've just explained it to ppl and ppl hav been explaining it rite back to me:P
N scyberdragon, sorry dude, didn't see ur thread and though it is very similar, I tried not to wholy focus on damage dealt...though everybody seems to be thinking so...Can't help it.
I guess somebody could just close the thread or something...
Nite...:P
Yes it's always what I thought, why Entropy said lightning instead of air.
Lightning can be another thing like energy. Or can be a mix between air and earth... + water x2 dom. :P;)

I prefer to keep it simple. Use the D2 elements (which really aren't elements, just things you can resist) and make everything else fit into the "magic" category. Arcane, Holy, Dark Magic, and all of those things are only affected by magic damage reduction
Yes !!! you got a right idea it's something like this that I hope
I don't think the game recognized them as separate, but I think I vaguely remember from some "lore" sources, like the game booklet, some in-game speech, and other things that demonic is a type of magic. Demonic magic. Not sure what it would enfold, though. I guess you could consider Curses of that nature, though they aren't specified as having elements in-game, either.

did they talk about resist ? I think we mean elements as resistances !?
Curses is considered for a spell, though resistance for curse is possible.
But I don't know how it's can be done and I don't think it's appropriate.

Things are kinda getting confusing here. Ok i'll have another go. First of all,
luc1027- man, i owe u an apology for my trolling last time. Quite pathetic of a behaviour from me to tell u the truth. So sorry mate.:) My own english is hardly good enough- mainly i expressed my ideas wrongly in this thread.
Anyway back on topic,
lets just 4get elements and resistances coz thats not what i meant.
See here, i talked of darkness as some form of power i associate with undead summmons and plant/flora as power associated with plant summons from druid.
So lets replace elements with 'themes'. Darkness and plant are themes used formerly. Both summons end up doing physical damage and poison creeper use a mixture of plant/poison theme.
Another skill is tornado from druid- using wind theme but doing physical damage.
So what new themes could possibly be introduced to make an original 5th char??:)
Ideas I proposed formerly are sonic waves and crystal as themes.
I hope u'll come up with new stuffs and mention a few skills too to illustrate ur thinking:)
Oh, ok ! in d2, I never find it clear, tornado do physical ? but hurracain do frost, both are wind... Do you need magic resist or physical resist for tornado ? it's never mentionned, I hope skill in d3 will be more clear in this way.
If you want a new kind of spell, we must find an resistance for, because I don't think we'll have skills unresistable like "hammer" from d2.
So the question is did sonicwaves and crystal are considered for magic (because it comes from spell) or it's considered for physical ?
Personnaly I think it's better to stay with what they know... the elements already implemented (fire, ice, lightning, poison, arcane). Seriously I don't want more than that, though maybe we'll have slow resist, physical resist... (stun resist ? curse resist) we can adding many resist.. but keeping it simple will be better.
I would like to see more arcane spell (I don't think only the wizard will have arcane spell, and mod in weapon...) so did the next class will use arcane ?? And other question : What is exactly arcane ? where it's come from ? and what It's can do ?
I want that each elements(resist) bring something different, not like a kind of damage you can resist. I explain,
Ice = slow,
poison = decrease life over time,
Fire and lightning = ? normal damage only different resist ? for diversity of monster resist ?
Arcane = ?????????? I want something usefull like ice
I see the spell "silenced" It is what I think ? come from famous RPG ? you can't cast when you silenced ? So it mean you will heard an incantation from your character each time you'll cast ? it's will be annoying after while ?
So the question is did sonicwaves and crystal are considered for magic (because it comes from spell) or it's considered for physical ?
Can be either. I definitely do not want them to do a new elemental damage type.

Agreed. Like emilemil1 said earlier in this thread too. N like he quoted a blizz statement...in which they also don't want new elemental damage types.:)

My guess is that 'arcane' would go in the magic category. I think someone mentioned that before though...
Let me illustrate how crystal theme could be used-
A skill that covers ur weapon with shards of crystals to enhance physical damage for a short time. A bit like 'enchant' but this time physical damage involved.
A skill that traps ur enemy in a crystal coffin temporarily immobilizing him. A more interesting and impressive way of simulating the stun effect.
A skill that causes huge spikes of crystal to erupt from the ground, piercing ur enemies...
Something along those lines:)

I like the skill to enhance damage, but others are too similar with ice (freeze and spikes of crystal can be replaced by ice).
stun effect, the monster are unconsious and vulnerable from any attack, but inside a crystal coffin, your attack touch coffin before monster...
You watch too much Naruto lol (Yes the crystal element episode are really great) but I think will don't have crystal spell in d3...
