It has been said that in Diablo III we will be working more closely together, and that your party won't divided up across a map. Communication will be key here. Diablo III is also said to be a more fast paced game, and speaking is quicker than typing in the middle of a fight, especially considering how difficult it is to type + attack at the same time. Plus this game is coming out in 2010 or later, voice chat is in most new online multiplayer games.
Do you think Diablo III should have voice communication built in, or do you think players should use programs like Ventrilo to communicate?
Xfire is also free, and supported in-game. It also allows for a group of people to be in the same conversation.
Also, Ventrillo is free for use up to 15 people, for more it costs money. (It's mostly used in WoW, where there is need for 40 people. However, it is also used in Half life and other popular games.)
Either way, if you look at WoW, you see there is some voice communication capabilities, even if they are primitive. (Though, guild-wide voice chat is good...) Still, I would stick with Ventrillo or Xfire.
nah it wont need it with vent and stuff being free and excellent. Plus what in gods name would we need it for? even the most complex battles in wow with 40 ppl could be done without voice if everyone was smart enuff to know there roles(sadly this is extremely rare)....i guess for pvp tho it would be useful
And how often in WoW did everyone know there roles? Five man instances are hard enough to get intelligent players, let alone 40 people who's ego's arn't so big that they think they can solo the whole damn thing.
But yea, considering things can turn to hell in a heart beat, I'd say a basic in-game voice system would be good. Just a basic one though, and if players want more advanced ones, they can download them...
Yeah, I've used Skype quite a few times playing D2, lol. It's way better than typing like a sucker and just made things way, way easier.
I don't think they necessarily need voice chat, but if they do have it they should make it more of a private system where only the people you choose can talk to you and you to them. Can't say I play a lot of games that use mics (maybe CS or CZ back in the day), so maybe things are already like this in most games with mic chat?

I've always prided myself and quickly typing out long sentences and still staying alive. It has killed me a few times though.
But for talking live to people, sometimes I'll even just use Messenger Live. It's certainly not the best, but there are plenty of options out there for talking to someone live over one's computer. It seems to me like different people would want to choose their own method of doing so and not necessarily use Blizzard's if they had one.
I don't want squeaky sounding 12 year olds ruining my online experience. If you want voice chat, go download vent or ts. It's not very hard nowadays.
Not everyone is 12 years old, but some people still have squeaky voices!
Even if they built in a voice chat system I'm sure you would be able to mute people who would "ruin your online experience". From past experiences, I've found squeaky 12 year olds to be quite hilarious to listen to.
Yes but what if you didnt know the person you were playing with. or if they didn't have skype or any of that stuff. You would still want to be able to talk to them

You know, Diablo 2 wasn't a snail paced game either. Yet we managed. I don't think we'll have problems typing to each other when we really need to. Besides, it's an action oriented game that doesn't require a great deal of strategy. It's not WoW, there are no healers, no debuffs to remove, and no specific mobs to crowd control with polymorph or sap. We go in. We beat the crap out of stuff. We move on.
Honestly the only time you may use text chat extensively is if you're not in combat, and just shootin' the idle chatter, or if you're stuck on a boss and you're in town thinking, 'ok, we tried that, it failed, lets look at this boss from another angle'.
In Diablo, when you got into emergency situations, you rarely stopped to ask for help from your party. You used your emergency abilities (fear, leap away, teleport away, whatever) or just ran the heck away, while your full-health party ran in.
I think it would be really nice to have a built-in voice communication system where you just have to hold down a key to relay your voice. Sure there are a million programs out there that would give you voice communication, but they are a hassle. Some of them would take the noise coming out of your speakers and relay them along with your voice, others require a lot of work to get your own private room. A good example of what I would like is a voice communication much like that build into counter strike. If they did that, I would love them. Plus, you are probably just going to be playing with your friends so there won't be to many 12 year-olds with squeeky voices annoying you.

I like the ability to communicate without having to type all the time.
Also it is imo more social when you talk to someone than write.
It would be nice to have voice communication with the other people in whatever game you're in. Surely there will be no shortage of 12-year-old squeakers, but I'm sure there will also be an option to turn off voice entirely for when you're in public games. It would be really nice to just have all my friends get in the same game without having to coordinate with 3rd party programs.
That being said I couldn't care less if voice chat is included or not. When I play PC games I pretty much always type, even when voice programs are available. It just feels more... natural.
Skype is free, crystal clear, and supports many people per conversation. That's all you need.
I'd rather they not tie up their bandwidth with their own hosted voice communication.
Pretty much sums up my opinion as well..
Although I'd like some form of "Radial Tree Conversation", like basic things "Retreat" - "I'm healing" - "I'm retreating" -> Like there's in Left 4 Dead, just for the basic stuff really -> And voiced by the Character I'd laugh everytime a Barbarian said "Retreat!!!"
