I was just chatting with Daemaro about the player cap when an awesome thought hit me, what if Blizzard set up some special gametypes such as Capture the Flag and Deathmatch? PvP was already an extraordinarily fun aspect of Diablo 2 (even though it needed quite a bit of balance work), why not expand on it a little bit? This kind of gameplay would really give players an incentive to reach the higher levels and keep playing.
There are a few problems that would have to be overcome, for example, what do you do about teleport in the CTF matches (perhaps teleporting makes you drop the flag?)? Also, what kind of rewards would you receive? But with some thought and some effort these would just be awesome PvP options in Diablo 3.
Diablo just isn't the place for fun and games. A lot of MMOs have little games, and tournaments, and the like, but it just doesn't seem right for Diablo.
The only PvP we saw in the last game was when players expressed hostility for one another.. generally, if you hated someone, you could try and kill them. And that is how I think it should stay.. my character will have better things to do than play a game. I'm sure Blizzard has put other interesting stuff to do in for high levels, I don't want to degrade myself by playing capture the flag or anything though.

oh yes oh yes.. i would love any type of pvp match implemented - all would be so much fun. i think an awesome pvp match style would be something similar to wc3's Defense of the Ancients custom map, suited d3 style of course
I don't want to degrade myself by playing capture the flag or anything though.
I understand your viewpoints on everything but this last bit. How would playing capture the flag be "degrading"?
You would probably be right that it's no place for fun and games, except for the fact that very rarely do people just go hostile and kill people because they feel like it. Most of the time they join a dueling game with the intent of fighting. I don't see the downside to giving them more options when they go off to fight each other.
As long as its way separate from the regular game.
This is a good point, but I wonder how separate they should be? I strongly feel that you should use the characters you build in the normal campaign... Perhaps there could just be 2 separate tabs for joining/creating games. One for the normal campaign and another tab for PvP gametypes?
It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a flag either. It could be something like "Capture the worldstone shard!" Or whatever, just the same theory behind it.
Also it seems like Blizzard is thinking ahead a little about PvP. I mean elements do different things.

Yeah I think just making PvP games would be neat. Standard PvP, or Capture the Flag, or whatever.
Lots of good points here... I think it'd be awesome if they changed it from a flag to something applicable to the Diablo universe. Worldstone shard sounds pretty good, we can keep thinking on that though.
You know what would be another fun gametype? Capture the Bacon! I think that's what it's called... you know where there's a nice object in the middle of the battlefield and everyone has to run in and try to take it back to their base. They had that as a map in Starcraft so I'm sure Blizzard knows what it is.
There could also be some other gametypes popularized by FPS games such as Assault/Bombing Run, Domination, King of the Hill, etc etc etc... I'd like to see them all in Diablo 3!

Well, yeah, but that kind of kills what little role-playing elements diablo has for me. You know? of course people aren't doing PvP duels because they actually are murderously enraged with someone, but the hostility was a way to allow people to do that while maintaining a motive for the character that actually made sense.
I just don't see how some Witch Doctor or something, fighting to save the world, his traditions, and his people could possibly be justified in taking a break like that just to play a game. That's how I would see it as degrading.. the character you play in the Diablo games is a badass hero intent on saving people from Demons and stuff. The only way I could see to have a capture the flag or something similar work in game would be to have them like tournaments or sports or something.. and I know I would feel degraded if I went from being 'Savouir of all' to 'CTF star #1".
Don't get me wrong, it would be a fun idea, I just can't see justifying it in the game, and I want Diablo to maintain what little ability to roleplay that there is.

I think it would be much more effective to tie it into the existing game, whilst keeping the tab option.
if your team wins - you gain a significant number of experience points.
This might be a problem... That would probably result in nobody playing the campaign anymore and just playing PvP. It's a neat idea, but I think if they did this they'd have to keep PvP characters and campaign characters separate. Still, I'd prefer some kind of other reward for PvP. Gold perhaps?

The problem with this, is in a minute we're gona get team deathmatch, assault, domination and its going to be an RPG spin off of unreal tournament lol
Diablo meets Unreal Tournament? GAMING NIRVANA!

Well, I think Blizzard could do a good job of integrating it... For example in (God forbid) World of Warcraft they wove the PvP in VERY well to the storyline. Like the battle for Warsong Gulch actually had a history to it. They could do something similar in Diablo 3 to keep the enthusiasts happy, and then in the end everyone is happy!
So you basically want battlegrounds from wow implemented some way into D3??? Sounds good to me....more pvp is great
Well, not really WoW battlegrounds... I think it would be better if they played more fast-paced like a FPS game. That would better suit the Diablo play-style in my opinion. I'm just saying they could be added into the storyline in a similar manner to WoW's battlegrounds.
So no spells? No melee weapons? No leveling up? What about armor, can we wear armor? Oh wait... that was in WoW too...
Nobody is asking for WoW "shit", if anything we're asking for Unreal Tournament "shit"
..to be implemented the same way as in WoW...
And don't take what someone says and twist it man, that's stuff that was pre-existant in the Diablo universe, you're talking about stuff from other games that wasn't originally in diablo and introducing it in.. that's a whole 'nother ballpark than spells and armor, dude.

I overreacted a bit... mostly because I knew from the second I said "WoW" that at least one person would got all hot and bothered over it.
Either way the only reason I suggested it could be implemented that way is to assist the people who think it should all tie in with lore. And WoW isn't the only game to tie fights in with lore, so I don't think calling it "wow shit" is fair.

While I am against introducing WoW mechanics, I think the idea of justifying this with the lore like WoW does would work better than not explaining it at all. But, personally, I don't want any other shit. No WoW shit, no Unreal shit, no MMO shit or FPS shit in general. I just want Diablo shit, because I love it.
I love Unreal too, and when i feel like playing CTF I'll play that.

oh god not this again....I dunno y u ppl hate wow and its features so much. So many things from wow could benefit a game like diablo....and considering wow is obviously influencing the devs your gonna see a LOT of things inspired by wow in D3
As for Number1SuperGuy thinking they should be more fast paced...I agree

I think a few pvp games wouldn't be bad. Namely capture the flag especially.
It'd add a little extra something to do.
Yup and lord knows D2 had little to nothing to do other then run the bosses over and over....they need to add in as much as possible for end game this time around

Amen, brother. This would be some great end-game content, and perhaps there could be some other new and interesting end-game things to do as well.
This just seems like a stupid idea. I mean, it's a very grim ARPG, what better way to kill the moment by playing capture the flag. Seriously, this isn't a FPS, this isn't WoW, this isn't summer camp, this is Diablo. I mean, cmon, capture the flag? I viewed this post earlier and I was so baffled that someone honestly thought that capture the flag in Diablo would be a good idea. I'm all for PvP, maybe even tournament style, but don't rape Diablo with a flag.

Arcane criticals silence.

It'll be interesting to see.
