I think I just came up with an idea to help Blizzard solve the problem of people using forum gold.
I propose that they create their own forum gold system, yet make it more in depth. I understand that this idea has already been discussed before, but I think that they should add more elements than other people have previously discussed.
I think forum gold should be the main way that they handle things as far as trading goes. They will obviously make it a better system than the forum gold people use now, with some sort of assurance that people don't get ripped off... Maybe even making the forums function like an auction house in WoW, when the item is won then you receive it in a 'mail box' in the game or something similar. I think this, coupled with chat trading and game trading would make this aspect of the game far better.
But then what stops people from still using the other forum gold site? Well that is where my real idea came. I think that they (Blizzard) should allow people to purchase things such as respecs exclusively with Blizzard forum gold (It would cost a ton of forum gold) OR the use of real money (Which they will obviously do to try and turn more of a profit, smart move on their part). I think they could also come up with some sort of equation where maybe 10,000,000 gold coins in the game could end up amounting to ten forum gold or something along those lines, which would be one way to make gold found on the ground useful.
Making things such as respecs exclusive to Blizzard forum gold will force people to use a structured system and will build a solid economy for all players, rather than the crazy economy that existed in Diablo 2.
Just my two cents, wondering what everyone would think of this idea.
Meh, don't really like this idea... Would rather they just to stick to trading and doing everything in game without the use of an online forum website.
Edit: If people could buy gold or whatever with real money, people would just buy their whole sets of gear and it would just be really really lame. Keep real $ out of games people!

I agree having to alt+ tab to check a internet forum takes away from the game. For Future ideas try to make up ideas that are "in-game" please.

Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could

Really? It takes away from the game?
I guess that statement just kind of confuses me... Apparently it doesn't take that much away from it when you look at the amount of posts made on Blizzard forums, fan website forums and forum gold sites every day.

Yeah Then you look at all the diablo 2 items being sold for real money on various websites and ebay, which takes away even more from the game, because your no longer concerned with the "in-game" currency, you just want a job so you can go buy enigma for $ 2.95. No forums, this isnt a text based game. And im not refreshing my browser every 2 mins to see if someone has replied to my trade offer

I didn't say they should be able to buy gold or items with real money... I said that Blizzard is going to charge real money for things like respecs. You can be angry about it all that you want, but Blizzard (being one of the most successful companies in the world) isn't stupid and they know when they can turn a profit off of a game. They aren't going to let you buy things like gear and gold, but they are going to let you buy other things that maybe effect how your character looks, etc.
My suggestion was that you can use both real money to do some of these extra things (such as respecs) or a massive amount of in-game currency, be it forum gold or just plain gold you find in the game.

What does that have to do with what I posted? If the games currency system is based on a forum run by Blizzard or in the game, how is that going to stop people from buying items/in-game currency either way?
I'm just looking for a way to create a more stable economy that can be controlled by Blizzard rather than an outside source, such as the forum gold that runs the Diablo 2 economy now.
Reset all servers. That can solve the problem of Forum gold for a while. No where to trade nothing to do with your forum gold and the items will be raised expensivly. Most people would rather go out and find it. People wouldent buy it becouse it could be overpriced extremly. That kind of shuts it down for a while.

Forum gold, in essence, is a reaction to a faulty in-game trading system. The reason it exists is because D2 gold wasn't worth anything, and so couldn't be established as a currency. It's exacly like with currency in the real world.
Why should Blizzard invent a new system like this when it is perfectly solveable by establishing a stable in-game gold currency and an extensive in-game trading feature such as an auction house?
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
