Firstly, the key word of the day is options. Allow players the option. I have played too many game but for some exceptions where players were forced to play the game the way the designers intended the game to go. From personal experience, having been the leader of the best guilds in the world, in several games over the span of my gaming career, I begin to notice the importance in the positive psychological associations people have with their perception of events. The reason games are so damn repetitive is because the game is designed to be played out th way the designer has intended. Hence you have games like super mariao, tetris, mine sweeper, that are repetitive. They don’t give enough options, people play it and never touch it again. We have to look at the types of people playing the game as well, a tetris like game would be very appealing to someone with a desire of logical conquest, but it would suck for someone who is looking for a adventure. There is a perception that Diablo is a game of killing creatures, that it has been designed around the notion that "if your not killing every 5 seconds then your not playing Diablo". What uneducated people need to understand is that that may be the case for certain individuals, but others may see it as something totally different and attach relevant values to it.
Complex isn’t it? the mind is a wonderful thing.
A game should be designed so that it allows all types of players from all types of gaming careers to be able to enjoy that one game together. That’s the challenge modern games hold. The designers of the game should cater for their players as they are not just players but also their clients who give the company its earnings.
How can you accomplish all of this in Diablo? well the best way is to give people options. Most Diablo players and clients to the product are returning players from the previous games. Cater and care for them, give them the options of the prior game to allow them to enjoy the franchise more, so much so they pay from their hard earned money, rather then getting a illegal or stolen copy which they will play over hamachi.
Having said the above here are some ideas which I think would improve the overal gaming experience for myself as well as for others. I have been playing diablo for a very long long long time, and to this day its my favourite game. Diablo 2 somewhat started to loose its flavour, and here are a few things that can improve it.
=======================
Number 1
=======================
As players venture into the game they obtain quests, certain members or member of the party should be given a counter quest with a higher reward in order to sabotage the main quest. Ie Tempted by evil. Maybe assassinate a random party member, or lead someone away from the group and let them die.
=======================
Number 2
=======================
A good and evil meter should be given. Why would 5 hero’s be venturing out to do the same goal, from my understanding of what a witch doctor is, i can tell you that they are far more evil then good. I think their agenda should be to get ultimate power not kill off evil. Either way a good to evil meter should be given, depending on the quests the player decides to take. Also certain NPC's should respond to this rank, and allow a alterrior game play from the standard, kill Diablo approach. Maybe save Diablo? People need the options to choose their destiny’s.
=======================
Number 3
=======================
Arcanum had a really great feature, among many great features, to choose right from the get go your players history. And this would effect you from when you enter the game. So if you were to be raised by dwarves you’d have +5 strength but because dwarves are stupid you have -5 energy. This is stationary and cannot be changed through the game. It gives the player more of association and background with the person he is playing.
=======================
Number 4
=======================
Diablo is a very old title, features such as gender, colour, and looks/build height/weight should be included as things you are able to change. I know you guys added a male female class, cool great but, that’s not what i said, i said colour, looks/build height/weight as well.
for single player you can have it so they play your original classes the way you intended them to, but for multiplayer its great to not have everyone looking the same. I don’t see why this feature cant be included into Diablo 3. There is no good counter argument for this. I want to play a black wizard similar to the Diablo 1 sorcerer, not some Chinese looking dude with dreadlocks. No racial slur intended!
=======================
Number 5
=======================
Don't make the game incredibly balanced. After looking at some of your skill trees for the Wizard i became anxious. A perfectly well balanced game is Guild wars, and despite having some great features, the fact that its so well balanced is actually a let down. Too well balanced is bad. You can quote me on that all you like. A fair balanced game should be Starcraft 2, and Warcraft, but they are very different titles with a different market.
Starcraft 2 is mainly played by Koreans and it has a responsibility to be the most well balanced game because of its overseas fame. So much so that there is a game Olympics around this title, and even a TV show.
Diablo 2 is not Starcraft nor is it Warcraft.
By the way, Blizzard is doing a great job on warcraft. Im not a fan of WOW but your actual strategy based warcrat is great! I played warcraft 1 when i was just 10 years old. And i have to say great work.
=======================
Number 6
=======================
Another really great addition shown in Arcanum is the book of knowledge. Don't quote me on this its been a while but its basically a giant book which combines herbalist, magic, electricity, mechanism in one, and levels per section per page. I strongly advize anyone in Blizzard to try out this game, it has some cool things worth mentioning.
Basically items you pick up such as leaves, branches, the smallest things, mixed with something else can create a elixir, or a buff potion. This also works with scraps of ore and metal, if you combine them and you know what your building you can create a sword, or a axe or even a neat little electrical spider.
as for number 1, NO. I don't want some fucking 10 year olds running around and screwing up my game. developers are supposed to try to stop this kind of things, not encourage it.
Thats why there should be a option to have a game PK or not PK. You simply choose to join the servers with the option disabled.
as for number 2, again NO. we are all in this against Diablo
Are we? very presumptuous off you to think so.
A really old game by Westwood studios Blade Runner gave the player the option to choose the ending through the way he played the game. He could be the good or bad guy, and hence influence the outcome.
Giving people the option to seek certain light or dark powers depending on their meter rank of good or evil is a great idea, i don’t see anything wrong with it.
as for number 4, I don't mind it. but it is not necessary. the gear would be enough for you to see a clear difference between two WDs or whoever.
I want to play as me, or at least the closest to me as I can create ingame, a chinese Wizard is far from it.
5. HOW CAN YOU SAY THIS? you want an unbalanced game? so that everybody will get the same class and the ones who don't will be called noobs by so-called experts on diablo 3? this idea is just flawed. and are you saying that starcraft 2 should be balanced just because of it's overseas fame?
A perfectly balanced game sucks. There should be a certain amount of it, but after a certain threshold it becomes lame! This is not Starcraft, such insane balancing precision is not required. This is not a Korean game. Look at any perfectly balanced game and play it for 12 months, see how you feel. I don't play guildwars anymore because of this. Especially now that introduced the Title system, its a waste of time better spend in other things. I'm not buying GW 2 because of this aswell. I wont be able to reep the awards that other players get for playing a computer game fanatically, hence its lost my interest already.
dude, you seem to be a huge fan of Arcanum which is cool. but if you like it that much, go play it and not d3. they are different games and should have different features.
I'm a huge fan of good features and great play. I don't see how a 4 player bnet game with 5 playable classes is a improvement from the old game. Graphics and story are not implied here. A 4 player online game is not worth buying. Everyone will hamachi it! And you can't possibly imply that a good feature is something to be disregarded, regardless of the game. If anything Diablo needs all the features and options given to it! Otherwise People will just hate this, by the sounds of it so far.. thats where its heading.
The reason games are so damn repetitive is because the game is designed to be played out th way the designer has intended. Hence you have games like super mariao, tetris, mine sweeper, that are repetitive. They don’t give enough options, people play it and never touch it again.
I don't really agree or disagree with your ideas, but I just have to point out the fact that Super Mario, Tetris and Minesweeper are some of the most successful games ever.
Noooooooo...
You're playing a predefined character, so you shouldn't be able to change the way he looks. It's like you want Gordon Freeman to be blond or Mario to be dressed in pink.
You can't change his height or weight, or it would make clicking on him more difficult.
Also, in Diablo you're sure you can identify a class in a blink because each character of a class looks similar, and have different animations and stances than other classes. While in other games you have to type /whois to guess his class.
And after playing like three hours, you'll find a helmet, and be wearing a helmet for the rest of your Diablo III experience. Being able to select our hair, face... is just completely useless. You don't even see it when you zoom out.
Why not allow people to have more control in the input? keep single player that way and allow multiplayer with that option?. I for one don't want to see 8 identical barbarians, and adding a helmet and armour for the long duration of the game sounds like a excuse to not add a option, or a way to turn a blind eye to the comment at hand.
I don't really agree or disagree with your ideas, but I just have to point out the fact that Super Mario, Tetris and Minesweeper are some of the most successful games ever.
if youd like to play tetris in 2011 by all means go right ahead.
Hence you have games like Super mariao, tetris, mine sweeper, that are repetitive. They don’t give enough options, people play it and never touch it again.
Sorry, but that has to be the dumbest thing i've read today. Those games are considered classics because they have replayability and gave video games the boost to become so popular. Most games today lack this severally.
Games today are just forgotten within two months of there release, but the classics are remembered forever. The first time you play COD 4 your like WOW, then the second time is meh, the third time is just plain boring. However, with tetris and mario, you can keep playing them to try and get better scores.

SAY WHAT AGAIN, I DARE YOU, I DOUBLE DARE YOU MOTHER ******
The reason games are so damn repetitive is because the game is designed to be played out th way the designer has intended.
So using your logic, games shouldn't be played the way that the developers had indented.
Thus what you are hinting at is that your *oh so amazing* Arcanum's developers had not at all intended for the player to be able to become evil. Giving them a evil meter and evil related quest was pure coincidence since they had not anticipated it could be done. *wink*
You are basically destroying your own argument that arcanum was a great game since you afterward claim that following the designers' intent is a road to boredom. So if once again we try to apply your broken logic to D3 it would result in this situation;
e.g. Blizzard designs a game that resembles the current model, releases it and further down the road a player breaks the coding of the game and changes it's core story/missions to be able to choose between a "good or evil" character. Now this would truly be *not following what devs had intended". (By the way what your talking about exists, it's called a MOD) and if you still don't like D3 cause you can't align with the Prime Evils in vanquishing the heroes of Sanctuary then you can go study some programming and design your own MOD.
Good day mate.
